Even better in 1980 with a cassette recorder with 2 built in mikes, recording guitar, vocals and “drums” (plastic bucket + film reel tin) in my mum’’s knitting room. Proper stereo ! Anyway, you have a good point. Using a simple multitrack recorder instead of a DAW forces you to become a better musician and to focus on the essentials of the song. Zoom multitrack to SD card these days though. Modern technology !

Love this and very intrigued by the bucket and film reel tin! Superb work!

reel to reel decks to start, then a MT-32 sound module(1987) ,Brother PDC-100 sequencer, fostex X26 , (started in the 1980's made records in the 70's). Added a pair of Juno 106 programmable keyboards. Years with these tools making music. It was a blast . These still work !

Great video, I've worked with 4 track cassette recorders for many years, and any time I used the bounce feature there was little or no degradation on sound quality because of the method I developed where I hit the tape hard for the backing track and then just layered more instruments all at hotter than normal levels which cancels out the noise floor.

On four-track, I had drums, rhythm guitar and bass on separate tracks. I recorded lead guitar and vocals onto the fourth track.

I got my first 4-track, a Vesta Fire model, in 1989. By late ‘95 I had used it so much it was falling apart. So I bought a Fostex and it was so much better. I did all the parts myself. I must have close to 300 songs or whatever you might call them. Sometimes I would just roll the tape to see what I could come up with and then go back and record on the remaining tracks. In the mid 2000s I digitized them so now I can listen to them on my computer or iPad. Now I use a score writer and compose for orchestra and various ensembles.

That's just awesome bud! Thanks so much for sharing. Great move digitising them, I love listening back to stuff that I did in much younger days, especially with the nostalgic tape hiss!

I actually started using an old reel-to-reel and two tracks because that's all we could get our hands on for a long time. a tascam 414 was extremely expensive for a group of teenagers in the 90s, but it let us just throw some room mics up and capture the whole band on the fly pretty much whereever we were going to practice with minimal setup or anything to take with you, MAYBE an extra mixer if you wanted to "be more professional" and have more mics for the drums all routed to a single channel. and you would work on the songs, get them as tight as possible and if everyone didn't get the take, you'd just replay the full song until you did. today you need a laptop (or PC that could potentially add ambient noise), interface, software, maybe some mic pres, overall just so much more "stuff" and cost to do the same thing. I can't imagine the hassle of being broke kids just trying to play music having to deal with all that.

I have noticed how lazy people are relying on the tech to clean things up, where as back in the good ol' days because it was harder to do comping, you would work harder to perfect your performance before committing to tape.

You might moch but even live performance is not what it used to be either. I can't remember the last festival that I attended were someone played a DJ set live. Now it's pre made and they just look like they're doing it. Same as most singer's relying on background vocals and or auto tune. Personally like to hear the imperfections because it feels more authentic and gives a more personal touch.
@DrustIV11 ай бұрын
That resonates with me. I had a Tascam 414 back in the day when I knew nothing, some of those mixes sound better than my present digital mixes. The luxury of having unlimited tracks can lead to overburdening the song with too many guitars. Thank you, good vid.

@@realhomestudioofficial There are guys around still recording and releasing albums with them! I think now though - every time you press play could be the time a belt or gear breaks. The mechanics just don't seem to hold up decades later.

You still can . I use an 8 track digital standalone multitrack. Record 8 bounce to 2. Then use a couple free tracks for vox . Thats plenty ebough
@MaxCardwell-y7k4 ай бұрын
What I've learned is there's a physics to sound . There's only so much a composition can take . Have less tracks doing more rather than more tracks doing less . Increase dynamics performance quality and source sounds . Use stereo imaging selectively against a backdrop of mono it works better by contrast

sorry to break the news to you but Fleetwood Mac did not enjoy making Rumours at all...they were all going thru break-us and divorces, they really couldnt even stand to be in the studio together, making the recording time awful therefore not wanted...it took a loooong time to get it out and then they HAD to get back into the studio for the follow up which was also a trudging experience...be well mate but be correct 😉😉 this particular Wikki is fairly accurate and gives ya an overview of the experience en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumours_(album)
