After experiencing a "major health event" at the top of a mountain, Tim Spector decided to investigate his diet.
Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London, has published more than 800 research articles on the topic and is ranked in the top one per cent of the world's most cited scientists. His current work focuses on the microbiome. He's also chair of the British Gut microbiome project. Read more: wired.uk/QXBaEC

I didn't know about the microbiome but I had a few 'long livers' as friends who had their regular red wine cocktail. One lived to 107, 102, 105 and a few in their 90's. Also my doctor told me to drink a small cup of red wine when I was pregnant with my daughter because I was a little anemic. This was a while back, my daughter is 48 now. He was old school. He long gone now. Ni other doctor ever recommended that again. My second pregnancy they gave me iron pills and iron shots every 2 weeks. Well, I preferred the glass of wine. Lol! The iron pills had side effects, one was constipation and I still was anemic.

Well for red wine 🍷 the study shows you only have to have 1 glass of red wine in two weeks to get the benefits associate with good gut health! but it is relied on the factor that the polyphenol in wine are sufficient to make an impact which is still underrated. Drink Wine because you enjoy it, not for healthy life style.

Very interesting. Similar views to Dr Michael Mosley’s research into microbiome and clever gut. Great minds (and guts😂) think alike👍

The gut microbiome is much more complex. Bacteria regularly exchange plasmids with each other, some confer antibiotic resistance. You can ingest another person's gut bacteria by sharing a bathroom and the toilet flush creates an aerosol mist that you breathe in.

Eating fermented foods are the best thing you can do for your gut microbiome 😁 kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir, yoghurt, miso, tempeh, natto, naturally fermented soy sauce, etc.. There are probably many more fermented foods from many cultures if you look for them.

Mr Spector hasn’t quite got it right here, although the majority of what he is saying is correct there a couple of important factors he has got wrong and wrongly endorsed. The med diet endorses moderate dairy intake and lean cuts of meat, mainly chicken or fish and low amounts or avoidance of red meat (usually sources of the fatty cuts of meat Spector wrongly says are part of the diet). Also, and quite importantly any amount of alcohol can no longer be part of a ‘healthy diet’. Modern research has made it clear the numerous negative health effects that alcohol has on the human body, so red wine can no longer be pushed as something to consume if you are seeking longevity. The resveratrol in wine that is often cited as one of the main health benefits is often not really often to have much of a positive effect, you would have to drink a lot of wine to get beneficial amounts. You’re better off finding a good supplement, or just eating plenty of real whole foods. Alcohol is now known to cause 7+ different types of cancer, heart disease, brain conditions, dna damage, liver disease and potentially more. Inconvenient, but true.
