My adult child has had an autoimmune disease since the age of 14. This was treated with steroids and immune suppressants, but the only really effective treatment was pre and probiotics, which helped manage the chronic condition without drugs. I agree with Professor Specter

Is it possible to really separate genetics and the environment from the microbiome, at least from the mother? Any child born normally will pick up their initial gut bacteria via the mother from the birth canal, so what appears genetic in that mother and child have it, could in fact be environmental. It would be interesting to compare the children to their fathers.

I think that a lot comes from genetic...

Why is he saying carbs are not good for us, when he only eats meat twice a month? What does he imagine that he's eating?

His dad was a Professsor - hmmmm. He didn't have to wave his arms around when giving lectures. Even the ancient Egyptians knew we are what we eat. Nothing new.

I am a scientist and and MD from Switzerland. This guy totally confirms what Professor Ioannidis says. He does observational science and brings it out as if it was a universal truth. Here is a personal counter example: I have 2 sons. 18 and 20. The older one eats everything in a balanced way. The other literally never had fruits and veggies. His favorite food is “fast food”. Mc Do, KFC etc. Both of my sons are semi-professional athletes and the smaller has an unbelievable power. They are lean and mean. They are medical students. Now if you analyzed their “microbiomes”, there might be a difference, there might be numbers that Mr Spector won’t like, but at the end of the day what counts is what your body leads you do eat. According to you desires and your genes but in a reasonable amount. Whatever Spector says is descriptive. It doesn’t mean anything. It should not be followed as rule. These guys are modern days Gurus and they are dangerous.

Just another example: Novak Djokovic is on a very “healthy” controlled diet (the 1st one to start such an eating behavior was Yvan Lendl). Gluten free, lactose free, taste free(kidding), etc Roger Federer eats whatever he wants. But 1 thing he will never stop eating in a daily basis is... Ice cream. So according to Mr Spector Federer would probably have a lesser “healthy” Microbiome than Djokovic or Lendl. They are all great champions. But who you would rather be? Judging by the permanent smile on Lendl’s face i could guess your answer. So Mr Spector please stop bringing up your credentials just to justify your useless speculations. Don’t forget that i am from the country of Nestlé, Givaudan and Firmenisch. The world biggest providers of junk and artificial flavors. But we live longer and better than anybody in the world along with Japanese.
