Sigmund Freud, in works such as The Future of an Illusion and Civilization and Its Discontents, was extremely critical of religion. Calling religions illusions, he maintained that they arise out of a child's need for comfort as it grows up in an increasingly hostile world as it leaves the parental bubble.
The desire for the safety of the father ultimately leads to what we would call religions today, often with god(s) as a father figure on central stage.
Moving on from the individual to the societal level, religions are illusions that help maintain civilization by encouraging adherents to repress their most violent, primal instincts.
Freud believed however, that religions would come to be discarded as their function is fulfilled by other mechanisms, by the advent of science and the further development of reason.

Islam means that the accusation is even more justified, according to the same axiomatic foundation of self-evident truths [being "stacked" atop one another]. These Palestinians have bad luck because they have allowed themselves to become too close to extremist Hebrew radicals. Should we forgive them? Probably not. P.S.: If you don't understand this, you've clearly never tried to cooperate with law enforcement. And by the way, yes, everyone makes fun of China for not being real leftists and being to vulnerable to the Japanese "politics" of each time period (which are "centrist" in that the Japanese don't want to fight against the northern South Asians who created the Hindu/Buddhist texts, but China can justify fighting them. This is similar to the reluctance of many Christians to fight the members of Judaism who are responsible for the spread of extremism). Yes, the politics were "nuts" in the Old World's West, but there was a period when people in the East went to Buddhist boarding schools and THAT is a unique moment in history which we might not be able to claim that we share with them, in case you have any genes from the Old World. By the way, there are many idol-sculpting companies and it's really no big deal at all to make new ones, and the way that ancient idols get appraised and put in museums is pure nonsense, and I'm telling you this as a friendly gesture so the New World doesn't get fooled into paying for that stuff, or thinking it's valuable or SUPER controversial. Its obvious if God is our heavenly Father,that he would place that infantile desire within us to last throughout life and so we can desire to stay in contact with Him. But for those many people who reject this need for a Father and laws,this is just as prevalent when they dont accept Him . Our deep true nature we must allow to be is to be a child who should follow the ways of a good father or mother too. Then so Freud only wanted to despiritualize everything he interpreted about the interactions of the mind! He wanted to materialize everything as random human instincts without God involved. Freud was only half right or maybe not even half right.What he vowed for with Nietchze and Marx was to create a rebellion against the need for having this heavenly Father. They were dangerous and wanted us freedom to give into doing the depravities of human mistakes.

@@Aldarionz9 Religion is proven correct during instants of time by specific individuals, while reflexes (and common sense) are also proven to have similar congruity. The reflexes are referred to as "earthly". The other stuff is referred to as "supernatural". However, the supernatural "world" merely exists in order to provide a "background" on which the "earthly" world is revealed, during investigations. Christianity seems to be "edgy" by nature. It seems as if it's "A False Flag Operation". In South Asia, these things are different

@@gamera5160I don't recommend coping with maintaining your sanity through religion. Go to the One Who made you. He is God who gives us not the spirit of fear but that of a sound mind. Many people tried to be their own saviour and they would go everytime deeper into the rabbit hole until they have an encounter with God, the Maker of heaven and earth. The only one who can give the kind of peace that transcends all understanding. The Lord Himself invites us: Taste your Lord and see that He is good. The problem people have is that they first create a God in their mind(who is not the God of the Bible) and then try to explain to the rest of the unbelievers as to why they can't believe in such a god. Well, neither does a true follower of Christ. That's why one first has to humble oneself and really be sincere in their desire to get to know God. For God resists the proud, but is close to brokenhearted. That's why may of those philosophers and psychologists lose their minds. Unknowingly, they serve the devil, whose only goal is to steal, kill and destroy. Those people will never be at peace. That's why we have mental health issues that are ubiquitous. Today people have more than ever. And yet, most of them suffer from anxiety, suicidal thoughts, fear, pain, self cutting, etc. Go to God who is the only who can save you and restore your mental and physical health as well as your private relationships. May God bless you all

Freud was important because he was the first to seriously consider, study and analyze thoroughly the psychology. But remember he was just the first one, and he was wrong or limited in a lot of consideration. The video itself considers it when it says "Freud being Freud", which highlights the limitations of his view to explain everything to early young life and sexuality. He understood something meaningful, but could not see further than the beginning. It is something that any pioneer in a field will suffer. Later people will expand and reach better understanding. The point is: this is valid to Freud's view about religion TOO! He presented a very limited explanation that psychologist today would not agree about it. Another problem of the essay is only consider an European point of view of religion, and concludes that this is a general position of psychological repression. This is very specific of a set of Western religions that are not true in Eastern or African religions. There are several religious practices that try to reach the divine abolishing repression, in sexual frenzy for instance. In summary, this is a very limited and old view about religion in psychology. So much more was discussed about it in the academic fields, trying to figure out what is the "oceanic" feeling. Describe it as a mere illusion in XXI century is limited and ignored a lot of scientific development in this field, to says the least.

Just wanted to write a thought I had just from the first two minutes. Coping really is, a least to me, a function of the self. Our mind must find ways to cope with existence. The opening of Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House starts with the striking line: "no live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality" I think as human beings we must limit our reality in order to function. I believe this is why religion, advertisements, secular ideologies, gender roles and so on are so appealing to us. When asked "how do we cope with the suffering around the world" we are often told to focus on things we can control, to limit our view. To create our own cages to comfort us from the the universal cage of existence.
@Wanderall
@Wanderall 5 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree with you. In the moment we realize reality is not as it is fully to our perception, then we can agree that our reality is a human condition. Religion is included in that because of the universality of the spiritual tendency we have. And at the same time it does not mean it is not real. Psychological experiences and phenomena are no less real because they are not tangible. Otherwise I would have to say that the fact that I cry watching Cars 1 is nothing more than a mere illusion.

What you say that you agree to SOUNDS like a great idea, but actually bringing that into reality would be terrible. For example, imagine if you were a top-ranking cop or soldier and you needed to give commands to either civilians/bystanders, communicate with a diplomat/foreigner, or give commands to your own officers: the whole PREMISE of religion (in the way that you're talking about it) is that every individual ought to think and decide like a mutineer. This is why so many Iranians live in America and constantly say their government must be destroyed: because not only are many of them affiliated with the government, but the others, who protest against the Iranian government in front of the embassy in DC are NEVER punished, they NEVER get in fights with the "affiliated" ones, AND both groups are basically indistinguishable. And they get security clearance by simply not checking the box on the forms where they're supposed to tell their new employer if they're a citizen of Iran, the DPRK, Cuba, and maybe one other country. @@NotMe-et9bx

Science and reason will never replace beliefs, as they occupy completely different spaces. There are things which the humans know, and things which they don't know. And there are things which they don't know but they believe. Why? Because it's essential for existence. On the other hand, there is no real conflict between science and religion. When Pythagoras invented science, he didn't do it for the industrial revolution. He did it exclusively for mystical reasons, to find the essence of the universe. If God made the world, he made the world the way the world is. The laws of the world, the laws of physics, mathematics, biology, are the laws of God. Knowing these laws you come closer to God. Everything else is just ideological farts with no connection with reality.

To the believers... their divine 'father figure' has chosen to play a game. With the hordes of little ones in 'the human herd' that supposedly look 'a bit like him'. That game is life ...and 'life' is purely a test to show your devotion to him. Get through the test ( three score and ten years ) and you can spend eternity, squatting in his awe-inspiring glow. That's it, there is no more to it. The whole of life is an illusion... there is no pain, or suffering. It was only a game. ( Similar to how a lot of people now theorise 'play with' with the idea of the world, being a computer simulation ) This is how the Abrahamic religions see the underlying nature of reality. As a God given test. Everything else is semantics. You either chose to accept this, or you won't. Generally, only a very small minority of the herd think this is all nonsense. But the vast majority of the herd need it, they desperately need the conclusion it offers. The ability to be absolutely right about the true nature of reality and that life is eternal. Both of these dispel, or at least subdue… the curse of human anxiety. This is what all humans instinctively and unanimously require. A complete release from 'mortal' anxiety. Atheists should understand this. But like children they fight it, as if they would fight a parent for trying to overly protect them. Yet they have to realise they are the outlier. They're out of touch with the 'majority', herd mentality. Whether they're devoid of normal herd-like levels of emphatic empathy, or just righteously belligerent iconoclasts.They must realise they're the noisy minority. And in many ways... both of these atheist subgroups should consider themselves, psychologically abnormal. For it is normal to believe in fanciful myths, and stories of ever lasting life. It is and always will be the default setting. It's what they implicitly need to function. Many things in life persist because they're 'tried and tested'. Because they're absolutely essential tools for the mental well-being of the herd.

Like Freud, he said a lot of things about religion and Christianity, but never refutes anything. How could anyone take him serious if he cannot refutes the things that he criticize? Or like the people who are commenting in this video: make afirmations about this and that, but never prooving, in a logic way, their afirmations. I suppose that these people, like the people in the comments and the guy who made this video, don't even know about logic or logical proofs.

In my opinion, these views of Freud and others are very limited, especially and only directed to certain parts of religion, or only mainly to the abrahamic religions, it uses the eastern religions not by itself or analyzing it by itself, but rather, uses it as a side argument for the main argument which is against the abrahamic religions and imo nitpicks the necessary parts to make the such argument, im sure if they really delved deep into eastern religions and the modern spiritual traditions/movements/saints, they would have a very different answer. Carl Jung not meeting Ramana Maharshi, i think was one of the biggest fails of Jung personally, and what couldve been contributed to the world, i personally lean to the camp that thinks that Jung not meeting Ramana, was a characteristic of jungs own shadow which he hadnt realized, but anyways, i wish freud and others really delved deeper. Also FYI as a sidenote, Eastern "religions" arent religions, they were given the name religion in the western framework. Hinduism isnt hinduism, its original non western name is Sanatan Dharma, its a compilation of philosophical systems, and enquiry is first, not dogmatic belief. My main counter argument to these folks, would be, you are only looking at religion in its dogmatic sense, how can you explain mystics of the long past and recent past or even the present to some extent, they arent "human", Freuds argument is acc one of the best ive heard counteracting religion, and Dharma in some sense, esp vedanta and most parts of dharma would agree with most of his analysis, but rather than being it being an irrational delusion, it comes from the core of all living beings, the want to go back to its original form, what Freud calls that ocean, which he sees as relating to childhood need, is acc the childhood need of all living beings for eternity, so in some sense he is right, but it isnt a delusion acc to Sanatan Dharma. Coming back to my main argument (my apologies) is that in the east, these saints and mystics exist to this day, in the west the number is very low, but here is a place (east) where these sons of gods are being regulary produced, and a lot of these experiences, and their miracles, is very very hard for one to explain through just the lenses people like Freud and Nietczhe use, its impossible. An example, Freud compares this to dreams, but hey, when one wakes up from a true spiritual experience, one doesnt remain the same, the outside and the personality changes for the better, thayts the difference between true meditation progress, true bhakti, true jnana etc... it isnt like sleep or dreams, as in sleep acc to dharma you do go back to that eternal reality, the brahman, but it is like psychedelics, you come out of it normal (in psychedelics its temporary), nothing really changes, even in psychedelics its only philosophical concepts that changes for the most part, true change isnt there, thats the difference, and people like freud idt have heard this argument ive put forth which in the east people put forth, thus my point that if they have looked into the east and these sorts of arguments, their view on "religion" (even tho dharma isnt religion, its religious philosophy to some sense as theres an extraordinary and supernatural) would be very different.

We have some Saints in the west. St. John of San Francisco, St. Herman of Alaska, St. Innocent of Alaska, St. Olga of Alaska, and St. Tikhon, Apostle to the West. The Orthodox Church has a pretty good number actually, with many of them having a plentitude of miraculous interactions with Westerners here. Freud, Marx and Nietzsche can only address Christianity on a superficial level by attacking Protestantism and the softest parts of Catholicism. When Freud's argument against Christianity (which can really be an argument even against Freudianism) is thrusted upon Orthodoxy, it falls apart. The same is true for Marx and Nietzsche. They punched as low down as they could. They seemed to always be quivering and scurrying about, hiding from the Christianity that preserved its Apostolicity for two millennia. (I know you meant saints and what not in a more Hindu sense, but my knowledge of the thousands of Hindu sects is limited)

1 God as intelligent creator is the most logically feasible way of explaining the world, especially if you take into consideration that we all depend on something else for ex. oxygen, food, community, water you name it and God being the underlying sustainer of everything. Freud was just theologically illiterate and apathetic so was convenient to dismiss religion, especially since it went against his metaphysical naturalism he was into.

Whom were disciples and the first Christians trying to control? This is so ironic that it's not even funny. They suffered from brutal beating, burning in hot oil, imprisonment, upside-down crucifixion, persecution, been burnt alive. And yet, astonishingly, Christianity had grown like it never would during the times of prosperity and comfort. It is thanks to Christians the first universities and hospitals were established. Thanks to Christianity science was possible; since we believe in God of order and not of confusion. It's only in Christian countries that it's possible for atheism and other religions coexist peacefully. It can never happen in the atheist North Korea. It wasn't possible in USSR. It hasn't been possible in Cuba. Atheists are delusional to think that atheism has been fruitful. The number of casualties that take place in the process of establishing atheist regimes is mind-boggling! And all they talk about it how religions (and by it they almost always allude to Christianity) bring about wars. They talk about thecrusades. Hypocrites! If it had not been for the crusades, atheism would've never even had the chance to arise to begin with..have you seen many an atheist(alive and well) in a Muslim country?

One of the core principles of Christianity is free will. God doesn't make anyone do anything, He wants us to participate in His life. If you want to have non-marital sex above having a relationship with God, go ahead. If you want to put money before anything else, go ahead! If you want to be envious or vengeful or any of the vices, GO AHEAD! If you put that before God, you can do it, but God reveals to us that our actions, as it turns out, have observable, empirically verifiable consequences. Some are obvious, other are much more subtle; some take generations for their fruits to ripen, but they always come true. The rules of Christianity are there to protect man from his own fallen nature. His proclivity to hurt himself by hurting others or polluting his body and mind. Its the catch 22 that the All Mighty puts Himself through willfully. If He just puts everything in right order by force, the game that He loves so much is over, but if He doesn't step in, many of His beloved children will refuse to play the game, or never be taught the rules. So He conspires to guide us towards Himself, slowly, mysteriously, where we *can choose* to doubt, or choose to trust, but there's always a choice to be mature, and accept reality, or deny it, and live in your lazy, neurotic self-deceptive cope we call atheism.

we do not believe anything. empirical evidence shows that there is no "you" to control. there is no "i" that exists. there is no one single point in where anyone ultimately exists. atheists do not worship genetics, or evolution...they study it - question it. Atheists reject "belief" as a concept altogether; as faith is just convincing yourself of something, but without the necessary means to justify *why* you believe such a thing. According to what physics and well - The Universe shows us: everything is predetermined. It is not a "God" we reject belief in all things; and simply seek out the truth. science is not a belief nor an objective "thing"...all it is - is a method of observing what happens in our universe and reality in a sound, non-biased, peer reviewed, repeated way. I understand that as a religious person it is difficult to grasp the fact that you are predisposed to your own conditions...and that you are not the center of the universe, but i challenge you to open your mind and think outside of the box for once. but wait; you cannot - your environment and your genetics already limit you from seeing around the fisheye you have encapsulated yourself within. i know you will not change and think about life in a more logical state - because your brain is already out of balance chemically in one way or another. you cannot think "freely" because thinking is done by a part of the brain; which is connected to another part of the brain connected to another part of the body and so on and so forth. meaning you cannot control how you think because at the end of the day: everything is connected. there is no "you". your personality and behavior is forever changing by the forces of the Universe and you have no control over it. you cannot stop it. like the other person said (and they are correct); our brains have evolved to soothe us by giving us the illusion of free will and ability to choose exactly what we do - which helps calm us in times of stress when our brains are overworking questions too complicated for us to answer. it all comes down to this: your biology (yes the physical world is the only "world" that exists, there are other dimensions - but they are still physical, energy is physical, everything we can perceive and measure are physical. there is no "spirit realm". there are only greater physical dimensions.), the environment while your brain was developing, and the social circumstances you are subject to now. there is nothing you can do to change this fact and to make sure you do not freak out your brain creates the illusion that your personality and emotions are a fixed vessel - separate from your body; when the truth is that they are one in the same. reality itself is a series full of illusions. if you have free will - then why don't you find my location - come over and fly like superman to me; and then pull a train out of your shoe. if "jesus" could do it then you can. i also find it hilarious that after reading the bible; "jesus" was a lot more communist/socialist than christians like to admit. it's incredible how delusional the human brain can become. i know i won't change your mind - because if i could then free will would exist. so i do not expect you to respond very productively to this comment...although i cannot blame you because again; you have no choice over what you believe in or what you do or think or feel or know. another example; if free will is real - then how were you born? you don't remember being a baby even, memories don't form that young. why didn't you just "choose" to be born in the most attractive body, or in a family of billionaires...? yeah. no answer to that one. LOL. last thing; this is only an exercise of thought - not meant to offend you so please don't go all paranoid schizophrenic on me. good day. @@scottsvt9104

It is as Nietzsche states that it is a form of nihilism as well because then the world is devoid of meaning. For some people, they can possess an absolutist view which helps them cope with this reality. However, for many others this includes non-religious people as well, something higher is needed to bring meaning to their existence. That’s why many people seek political ideologies, etc because it provides with a type of philosophical suicide but in exchange it provides them with a “moral” compass to fill the vacuum.

This video reminded me why I largely dislike Freud and Marx so much. A lot of Iain McGhilcrest's work seems to indicate that that the manner in which Freud and Marx looked at the word was a highly abstract, left-brained mechanism of 'things' -- which sees the world as fundamentally dead and inert at it's 'truest nature'. According to McGhilcrest, much of modern man actually functions as though it is damaged in the right hemisphere now, and I find that deeply concerning. I don't have an issue with slicing up the world and viewing it as mechanistic; but I have an issue with rather arrogantly/condescendingly presuming that it is the only correct way to view things. One can also look at the world through a perspective such as Alfred North Whitehead's -- in which Beingness/reality is fundamentally fluid, organic and alive. Why is that any less valid a perspective? 9:40 Contrary to what Freud thought, most religious people don't always feel as they 'gain control' over reality when they attain that feeling of oneness -- on the contrary, many describe feelings of surrendering to God (or the universe) and are actually just at greater peace.

Human beings are beings that worship. The defining feature of humanity. And if you do not worship something supernatural, bigger than ourselves, divine, then you will worship the profane and worldly. Money, drugs, products. I'm convinced that Sigmund Freud has been elevated to his status as it means of disconnecting man from his humanity

The shitty thing is that we all going to die. No matter how much we do philosophy. The reason stops when people seduce them selves into believing that they are going to heaven even if they know in their heart's that it isn't true. It's the same mechanisms that a alcoholic has when he thinks that it somehow will work out. Even if he looses his ability to walk after a long period of heavy drinking he still insist.

Humans for the past 4,000 years: We have created vast cities, civilisations and works of art from religion. It has provided us, over those years, with love, hope, courage and strength in a vast, cold and apparently uncaring universe. Freud, brain expanding to the size of the Galaxy: lol what a bunch of babies. Only galaxy brains like me understand that this is a cope. Less than 200 years later: All of society collapse due to climate change. Religious societies survived for thousands of years. Secular society can barely manage two centuries. What an absolutely epic achievement.

That’s stupid. Freud saying people feel this oceanic feeling , this feeling of eternity, this feeling of something beyond… is simply a subjective desire to control a scary, hostile, foreign place … how does he know that is true? How does he know that is why that feeling is there? How does he know that God did not place that feeling there for a reason? The feeling of eternity was placed there by God. Ecclesiastes 3:11 God has set eternity in the human heart.

The logical reason I will stay with Buddhism is because of the science of what meditation can do for ALL people. Atheism will not work for all people because the current science of the world doesn't provide enough Cope for All people; rich, poor, young, old, etc. If scientific interventions had enough Cope for all of the different kinds of people, then religion could diminish at a fast pace.

All living beings, are nothing but a bundle of nerves, that is capable of memories, and some logic, very similar to a computer! When we live, we acumilate information, then process it and store it, for later revival. Each individual is different because the input information is different, even identical twins! So we over estimate that humans are superior, we have souls, that carries forward even after death! Not so, death kills all our memories! My argument is, if we live with this concept in our minds, we don't need religion to console us, about the fear of death. However, I also fear death! Maybe, my upbringing, made sure that I should fear death.

Why will non believers not leave us alone, let us keep our beliefs, as we leave atheists, scientists and business people to their beliefs. Real religions want only peace. I am talking about TRUE believers, not the fake ones who only want power and money . So many fake information, follow the bible or Koran, not the priest, not the news... @@kingearth3672how can you still believe in atheism when you see what followed in its wake? Believe me brother, only those peoples who maintain their traditional faith in God will survive. Atheism and Liberalism are self refuting ways of life.

@@NorthernObserver religion is self refuting, its evil and for me, destroys freedom. And if people are using religion to be good but are bad people if religion didn't exist then they are still bad at heart and only good due to fear of religion. And not being religious doesn't make u an evil person. Being good or bad depends on the person. And people will choose to be religious or not religious based on their own feelings so people who were good only thanks to religious fear turning evil when they stopped being religious can't really be helped cause that's who they truly were. Again, whatever followed after religion is due to PEOPLE THEMSELVES, atheism doesn't say to do whatever you mean by "followed in its wake." Also again, we can't really stop people from being evil due to them stopping being religious as it's up to their feelings to be religious or not so it's not atheism' s fault they became evil but their own nature. And wdym u need religion to survive, no u don't if u are strong or want to be truly strong which would mean u would not use religion to "survive."
