Why Resident Evil 7 is Brilliant

Resident Evil positively surprised me, because it did for classic Survival Horror what Doom pulled off for the old-school First Person Shooter.

This entire game is homage to a lot of horror films, The Texas Chain Saw dinner, The grandma being in a wheelchair is the same in Texas Chainsaw, When you fight Jack he gets the scissors and says "Groovy" Reference to The Evil Dead and the Birthday tape is similar to the Saw films.

Its deliberate but that is the only similarity, the dinner scen, its a splice of Texas Chainsaw, Evil Dead, actually alot of Evil Dead in there and Silent Hill 1, I actually think its a homage and not trying to rop SH off and off course there is plenty of Resident Evil 1 in there too which paid homage to The Night of the living Dead movies and a load of B movies. Resident Evil is the American Horror Story of video games but now its scarier than both that tv show are earlier RE titles.

I never thought I'd say this, but this just might be my favourite Resident Evil game. And I feel resistant to this idea, since I have such a soft spot for REmake 1, but RE7 gave me something that I never thought I would see in a game: Fun Horror. I'ma huge Horror fan, and I collect Horror films. My favourite decade for Horror is the 80s. The reason for that is two-fold. 1) I prefer practical effects to CGI, 2) This was the decade of what I call "Fun Horror". You know, Re-Animator, The Deadly Spawn, Evil Dead, Creepshow, Return of the Living Dead etc.... This is the brand of horror that I love the most. It's horrific, but also fun. This is the brand of Horror that RE7 exhibits. I found myself laughing and being scared-shitless in equal amounts. The first signs of this come when Mia hacks off Ethans' arm. It's horrific, but funny as hell. As a side note, I was blown away - and I cannot understate that - at how my character ACTUALLY got hurt. You know, it wasn't some nebulous amount of HP that I lost, it was my arm! This never happens in games. Your character never actually gets hurt in this way. Later on if you get caught by Jack, he chops off your leg with a shovel, then places first aid on the ground and tells you to come and get it, leaving you crawling across the ground, it's hilarious! Or have you tried running him over with the car in the garage battle? Where he jumps on the roof and takes you for a ride, hilarious!! Then the car explodes and Jack becomes a walking fireball, you panic, but then he mockingly says "Look what you did, motherfucker"! And the game goes on like this. For this reason, it is my favourite RE game ever. I never thought I'd see this obscure, often misunderstood brand of fun 80s horror in a video game.

I agree completely. It's horror as a roller coaster. There's nothing wrong about deep moody and disturbing horror, but nothing wrong either with slashers. Variety is good. I like a deep disturbing horror experience in a movie, but If I'm gonna spend 10h there, I need some fun to balance it out. I also like how absurd it can get: how the hell did you reload that gun with your chopped off hand? In many places the game could have upped the horror (forbid you to reload and have to fight Mia with just the one clip for instance). Or the tragedy (what if the reason the Bakers could sew you back together was that you were contaminated by the"gift"?) But the choice to go for a fun ride experience worked perfectly for me nonetheless.

This was an interesting listen. But one thing i'll never understand is the resident evil communities beef with chris being muscular. It has little direct effect on the game, and as far as story progression goes, it makes sense that he got that way. You have a superhuman biological experiment thats been wanting you dead for 15 years... has kicked your ass on numerous occasions, and you fight monsters as a career. If you arent living in the gym and at the shooting range at that point, you're a dumbass. Chris being buff made sense.

It makes sense logically in a progression that was in turn possibly a fundamental mistake or at least mildly unfortunate in hindsight, as it went in line with games losing their horror identity and drifting towards yet another third person shooter, and away from the protagonist being an avatar of the player (who is supposed to feel scared) and towards player slipping into a superhero role, a fundamental inversion. As numerous entries show you can run the series as an anthology which crosses over with other entries in themes and lore but doesn't necessarily continue the story of the same characters, and it makes fundamental sense since eventually the character progression is exhausted. And just because prior games did something, doesn't mean they were perfect and that their decisions shouldn't be re-evaluated in order to keep the series from growing repetitive or abandoning the core appeal. A little reminder that RE1 has a protagonist choice, you can play either as Chris or as Jill, and Jill is anything but a tank. While both are trained combatants, neither would have been prepared for the situation they found themselves in. RE2 plays as Leon, a police rookie. RE3 brings back Jill. RE4 is Leon again, this time as a special agent. RE5 brings back Chris. RE6 brings back Leon and Chris again. It was simply well beyond time to stop bringing back protagonists.

I have always been confused about how when you get the serum, the thought of curing YOURSELF never came up. You have two, and use one on Jack leaving only one for one of the two girls, but at no point do they mention Ethan using it himself. He's obviously infected, what with having his hand previously sawed off but come out relatively fine, as well as your leg if you screw up with Jack. I think I would have enjoyed a perhaps more selfish option.

It baffles my mind that just because it's a 1st person horror game people thought it was in anyway like Outlast. It's literally old school survival horror with a modern twist and a change of perspective. As opposed to Outlast and other similar games where it's all about stealth and feel almost like walking simulators with a little more gameplay.

I completed resident evil 8 village on normal about a week ago. It was my first full playthrough of a resident evil game and I loved 8 down to the core. Today I completed 7 on normal and I will say, it's much harder than 8. The resource management is much stricter and the enemies while less sparse, are much stronger in my opinion. I love both games and hope to play the rest of the series, the next game i plan to play is resident evil 4. That said, as if right now 8 is my favorite. I like it more than 7.

I really feel bad for Alien: Isolation. It did many things that the new Resident Evil did and it did them two years earlier. Alien: Isolation was far from overlooked. It's a fantastic game, critically praised and loved by the fans. And as I said - it would have been wrong to turn this setting into an alien shoot-em-up later on. They did everything right in my opinion.

Aron Redfield I hated Alien, I tried so hard to enjoy its amazing enviroment, but it's bullshitted me harder than any game I've ever played (I even got to the keeper gas room In the Evil Within,) I swear she was a 400 pound old lady that was constantly voiding her bowels, I'd hide in a closet (with the Motion tracker off) and holding my breath, and moving slowly....and that fucker would charge right in and find me. Somehow. It didn't even have to see me, it's like she was a damn French prostitute with elephantitis afflicted feet. I also knew that you were supposed to avoid the androids, but i was curious (it was on easy and I STILL couldn't kill one what the fuck?!) I was snacking him in the back of the head and using some special weapon against him, still eouldnt do shit. No game has ever tested my patience like that. No matter how I played I would always die, because the xenomorph chasing after me with a motion tracker. I mean I was always crouching (funny, I had a better chance running half the time cause he always knew where I was anyways. Actually, shit, my brother might've left the noise detector on for the kinect.....eh, I never make noise anyways unless my fan is on. Really, I think that game would be more entertaining for me WITHOUT that alien fucker. Agh. It was so pad, I'm getting flashbacks, oh man I despise that game. Everything was so good, except for that alien. I'd give it a solid 8.5 without the alien, with it, go me at least, 4. I can't give the experience justice. Hell, one time I was killed by the alien from a vent WHILE he was chasing me (no, there wasn't two, a second one didn't come along yet, it was still the beginning of the game. I even remember watching my brother play exactly like I did, and he was never killed. Infuriated me.

Nicklaus Kindelberger well it was frustrating for me too from time to time but that was the point of the game.the reason alien found you in locker was probably becouse you used to hide in lockers much and the AI of alien is adoptible which means if you hide in lockers or under tables much he will first check that places so you have to change your tactics. About that ventilation shaft kill ,if you mean when you have to initiate emeregency procedure to open the door after medical,it was an difficulty spike.alien was not in two places but was constantly changeing position.it was in fact the most difficult part and most iritating part becouse that difficulty spike

An interesting effect of player vs character progression is that switching to Mia who we have no idea is a well trained agent should make a disconnect between our choices based on what we've learned of handling these enemies to handle the fact Mia has no weapons or anything, but it doesn't! We've got that bit we've learned but we're so confused about what's going on, what this ship is, where Ethan is etc that were still right there alongside Mia exploring and trying to understand who's fucking with us. That build up to Ethans badassery hasn't vanished from us as the player just bc were playing Mia, it just shifts to feeling like she's got her own right to be sick and tired of what's going on even as she and we are put off by how little we understand about the new environment. We lose that uncertainty making us hesitant at the same time as Mia remembers everything, so our mindset can fully focus on "time to kick the ass of anything that stands in my way" just as she becomes capable of providing that It's flipping genius!!

A prime example of quality over quantity, RE6 had 4 story campains with 7 playable main characters & separate game modes for extra play time, it had a good 30+ hours of gameplay. It was still shit. RE7 had around 10 hours of gameplay in the core game (6ish hours 1st run through & 4 more for unlocks) & it was fantastic.

Why do people say Ethan's search for Mia is the same as the story from Silent Hill 2. Ethan didn't kill Mia and isn't being haunted for killing her. People act like SH2 is the first time a character in a story was looking for a lost loved one. Then again, half these people think RE7 is the same as Outlast or P.T. because of the first person perspective.

SH2 is in its own playing field compared to RE. They each have their own formula of horror and when they stick to it they are really good at it. SH is more psychological survival horror and RE is more of a stress-inducing-in-your-face survival horror. But once RE started going the action route of gameplay it started to lose what made it so unique. That's why the remakes and the newer games are trying to recapture that. P.S. SH2's story shouldn't even be compared to RE7; that twist was legendary and will still be one of the best horror stories of all time.

I really liked RE7...up to the part when your lifeboat sinks. Then the ship section is such a pace/mood killer. It works for exposition but if I ever replay it, I won't be looking forward to doing that section. Shame cause the game up to Jack's last fight just kept getting better and better. I think it would be interesting to see a game based around a disempowerment driven story. Say, you begin as a member of an overpowered military squad, killing monsters like it's nothing, even making fun of it. It starts like an action game. But then, subtle clues begin to creep in, suggesting that the situation will not be as simple as it seems. Your ammo starts running low, the soldiers experience more and more problems communicating with the outside world, and are also forced to engage in hand to hand combat against more powerful foes. As most of them have died off close to the end of the game, the player is basically forced to sneak around "outlast style", with no armour or firearms. I wonder if this action to horror structure could work, as it kind of does the opposite of resident evil.

49:53 Best part of the game for me was the replay-ability, whether its trying to get all the achievements or wanting to use the extra items like the circular saw or xray glasses you got on your last playthrough, theres always a reason for me to want to play it again. I love the look of the game, the colors, the characters, the environment, even the molded where a cool part. It might just be me overthinking it, but seeing Mia when in the old house was actually nice and makes sense on how she would have escaped twice, one from wherever she was before Margurite got to her, and the second time from wherever she was before Lucas took her away. Makes me sad we didn't get a DLC playing as her sneaking through the house up until she talks to Ethan.

This game is an 8 to an 8.5 out of 10 game. Not just a solid game in it's own right but a great Resident Evil game. In my opinion it is the best RE game since RE4. I have to admit i did judge it early on but as i played it more i saw that it did indeed have more depth that i assumed. If i did have to point out any flaws i would say that perhaps they may of borrowed a few concepts here or there and at times things may feel a little predictable but i have been playing Resident Evil since 1996 and i own every game (Yes even Gaiden lol) and Resident Evil 7 is a fresh yet familiar edition to the Resident Evil universe. Great video as usual Ragnar.

In this game the only enemies are the bosses and the bosses are not scary and the boss fights themselves are rubbish in terms of game play. The dad walks around looking for you and you awkwardly hide behind a door as if you are exploiting a glitch. This is not scary, it's rubbish. Then after poorly designed boss fight, the mum takes over and you repeat the exact same type of thing. If you think that is a masterpiece of gaming design I feel bad for you.

They are "molded" by her wish to not be alone and at the same time consist of the "metamycel", which is some kind of fungal growth. the scene when you inject evelyn with the necrotoxin is really hartbreaking to me. When she exclaims "why does everyone hate me?" with such angiush and loneliness in her voice it really envokes deep felt pity for the character.

89saur people were very disappointed with Resident Evil 6 so Capcom really want to redeem themselves to the people who bought the first three games like me. Capcom ignored the people who bought the first three games when they released five and six to the disappointment of survival horror fans everywhere. I like resident evil 4 still because that game was still scary as well and had great atmosphere in someway Leon s Kennedy still felt underpowered against these foes in that game. Resident Evil 5 ruined it for me because it had Co-op survival horror is best experienced alone and that was ruined by Resident Evil 5. I never will play Resident Evil 6.

I just finished playing this a couple of days ago and I agree with you on several points, the claustrophia of the environment, the mystery ( of which Zoey's phone calls contributed to) the helplessness of running from Jack with no weapons, it definetly had that horror movie vibe, where the main protagonist starts out helpless and afraid, then starts getting angry and comes at the enemy with an almost lack of self preservation and wanting him/her/it off of their back. The exceptions to this game and your commentary on here is, While not as scary as Jack to me, Marquarette could be unsettling, plus, I think her insect based powers were good, in that fighting her was a different experience than Jack. If she was similar to him, in attack and form, than it would have felt like a clone battle. I felt Jack's last fight was a bit of a past Resdient Evil pandering. I think after your chainsaw, "cage" match, that he should have stayed down, as I felt at that point in the game, you deserved that victory, so for him to come back later, felt like a Resident Evil cliche. Especially as a being with eyeballs popping all over his body, which has been done in past RE games more than once. I was actually more shocked at the end, to see Chris Redfields new employer. (The free, Not a hero DLC explained that to me later) I look forward to playing RE 8 soon.

Alright... let's talk about this game. Positives: 1. I enjoyed how hard it was to aim. This game shows no mercy. If you miss by a millimeter you will miss. The skill gap was fun to get used to. 2. The way the story was driven was interesting... up until a certain point. 3. The claustrophobic atmosphere made the house really scary ( at first ) Negatives: 1. The story has a plethora of plot holes. For example, how could evaline still turn Zoe to stone, and still "infect" Mia with hallucinations on the ship, when you give them the serum respectively? Why did she not immediately take control of Zoe in the DLC that shows when evaline first gets there? When she took control of the rest of the family almost immediately? The plot holes are some would say a trademark in resident evil games, but since this game attempted to pry away from that, the story should have been a tight narrative, not a sloppy article. 3. Atmosphere felt VERY forced maybe 3 hours into the game. The slow movement, and small areas simply became agitating after awhile. After you figure out all encounters are scripted, the experience becomes really predictable. 4. The unvaried enemies. Besides the main bosses, you only fight the molded in different forms. This becomes very repetitive, and it's not challenging whatsoever once you've experienced the 4 variants. 5. Evaline was a really disappointing boss battle. It was just a shoot em up. Interactive cinematics and not much else. They had the opportunity to make Ethan go through a traumatic psychological experience, which could have shown Ethan and Mia's home life before hand. These are the main reasons I can think of at the moment. If you've read this far tell me what you think, and if you agree with my list or not.

your silent hill point is slightly off. Yes the fog was a necessity to cover up hardware limitations, but it became a general characteristic of the town itself. every silent hill game after it that took place in silent hill had that same fog. the fact is third person was real reason it went the way of action adventure rather than Survival horror anyone who was able to read the room when third person was introduced in RE4 you could where they were experimenting with more action gameplay than focusing on Closter phobic environments and tension building.. lets run down the clues for anyone who didnt notice. RE4 had third person camera, a turret section with infinite ammo, wrestling moves/knockdown killmoves, QTEs and enemies who and basically shoot back. all of the above are present in RE 5 and 6 and are center pieces of their game design
