I can't stress enough how important this area is to air seal in your home. I have a multi-level home, 1700 sqft, built in 1960. When I Air Sealed the rim seal in my garage that ran along the house side of the garage as well as around the perimeter and the the gap between the drywall ceiling and the foundation, the change inside the house was almost instant. I thought that was a big deal, until I tackled the rim joist seal. In my case I have a Cantilever or bump out in the front that extends about fifteen inches past the foundation. When I got around to doing the rim joist I was shocked at what I found. The builder had stuffed one four foot long R13 paper backed insulation strip in between the joists that ran back twenty inches. Once I removed the insulation, what I was looking at, was sunlight coming through the different seams and junctions in every bay. After properly sealing and insulating, I saw another big change to the positive. Air sealing your home is the biggest bang for your buck. Statistics say, a properly air sealed home will cut your utility bills anywhere between 20% to over 40% in some of the worse case scenarios.
