Love the content.... A simple tip foamer to foamer. When spraying under a slab on gravel substrate it always helps to flash coat a light layer 1/4 to 1/2 inch on a large area, Then let set up to walk on and then apply second coat to complete final thickness. Helps stop foam from seeping into gravel and helps keep More consistent thickness. Patients is key while applying spray foam. 👌

In my opinion if it contains any form of isocyanate orMDI like they do on cans of consumers spray foam in tiny lettering I would and could not use it . Ask me why I restored a older speed boat outside I injected 2 can of building box store purchased cans of consumer polyurethane expandable foam while wearing an n95 carbon filtered fitted respirator and sealed goggles .I had 6 1/2 inch holes drilled in the sub floor of my 16 foot boat used the supplied plastic straws the application took less than 5 min on the last hole I felt like I could breath jumped out of the boat my eyes were blood shot I was excreting huge amounts of mucus’s I was sick for several days and that was 2017 still have an on going cough.I knew the foam contained MDI aka isocyanates that’s why I wore the paint n95 and I was outside in a breeze above the sides of the boat which is about 3 feet deep . Imagine if some one used that spray in I babies bed room . Many friends of mine had to quit the auto body trade because of isocyanates and its cumulative so one you reach your threshold you can go near the stuff .As a hobby I restore car boats and trucks even sanding or grinding the clear coat releases small amounts of isocyanate so you have to be careful .A good source of info on working with isocyanate hardener was on line by dept of labour for various states under auto body and truck bedliners workers and painters

Hi guys I live in Ireland and there is a problem with using spray foam insulation ,insurance and mortgage companies will not provide any service if it is used, because they say that the structure cannot be inspected, plumbing & electrical is obscured and difficult to check. We don't have termites but we do have woodworm they are tiny but love to eat everything for the roofing to the legs on your bed! So we're using the rolls of fiberglass or cutting the preformed sheets and then fitting them by hand. Ironically I can use it for my garden shed and on my freestanding garage because they are non-residential.

What was that purple single component that was being sprayed on the cracks. I would rather put that through my sprayer than run through a couple dozen caulking tubes. For checking foam depth I made what I call a pokey thingy. Arrow shaft with an adapter pressed in so a sharpened piano wire from a hobby shop could be set it. There was a set screw so the depth of the foam would be at the adapter(piano wire would plunge full depth). Great for an installer to keep in the other hand while spraying. What foam was that purple foam? I love NCFI antimicrobial foam. It lays down like a 3 lb foam and you still get 4k+ bf out of a 1k lb kit.

@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
That is all closed cell foam. You friend hired idiots. Probably gave him a "deal".
@christophergruenwald50542 жыл бұрын
All spray foam has an exothermic reaction while curing out. Some foams are hotter than others. Some will burn down the house if you apply it entirely to thick in one pass. Some closed cell foams have a maximum lift of 2 inches. Those are the worst to work with and have the least amount of safety cushion when spray into tight areas. I like foams that are capable of a 4 inch lift minimum. Then you have a safety margin when spraying 3 inch lifts. Even better when the foam is capable of a 3.5 + 3.5 back to back for a total of 7 max before having to wait for the foam to cool.

Not sure if this has been answered after scanning the comments, but I just saw the foam in the areas of our attic between the conditioned and unconditioned spaces is free standing between the studs.. There is no OSB backing as they used cardboard which then falls off exposing the foam on both sides between the studs. Is this considered an acceptable practice (for a Florida home) to build a "wall between the conditioned space and the unconditioned spaces over the back porch and garage?

A solid wall is in fact better, more to adhere to. We have had people use cardboard in areas where it will not rot away to be a temporary backer for getting SPF in place.

I can add a 5th pitfall. With full depth, it is impossible to later snake a romex to install i.e. a sconce light, or expand a 2 gang switch box to a 3 gang box and add a ceiling fan. The same problems come up with plumbing & venting. For instance if you want to relocate the laundry connections from basement level to 1st floor or 2nd floor laundry.... you cannot do it without tearing out a huge amount of dry wall, insulation, etc. Someone might argue that they designed the home the way the want it. Well so what? 25 years from now when you’ve sold it, somebody else wants to make some changes such as added recessed lighting. What would have been a couple hundred dollars is now a thousand dollars or more.... and the worst of it is, they don’t figure that out until the walls are all torn apart, leaving them feeling held hostage by the issue. The stuff that is just a couple inches thick is fine. The full cavity foam is only going to cause problems down the road. I cannot advise anyone use it, and it should actually be prohibited in my opinion. It would be akin to suggesting people recess their electrical panel into a basement wall niche & cementing it in place... it does not allow for later modification, maintenance, etc. Once upon a time, CPVC plumbing was the recommended method too, don’t forget. FULL cavity is NOT the way to go. Don’t ever do it. Do the partial method only.
@christophergruenwald50542 жыл бұрын
I’m not recommending full cavity filled, but I am curious what plumbing are you running through an exterior wall anyway? If you are moving plumbing it’s going to have to be an interior wall for water lines and if you think you are going to move a sewer or vent through an exterior wall without removing the rock anyway it’s not happening. I’ve added electrical outlets in mine and it’s not the end of the world. I have about a 1 inch gap in my walls. And if it was an attic situation adding in lighting is going to be much simpler as you won’t be crawling around in 2 ft of itchy insulation.

@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
I have no idea. Try retail pour foam from a building supply store.
@pcno28324 жыл бұрын
There are more wrong ways to do that than right ones, especially if you expect to keep the car a long time in a wet climate. They had some cars in the 1970s (eg. Chevy Vega, VW Beetle) that were notorious for rust in the A-pillars because the foam that was used held water like a sponge, and some closed-cell foam can absorb increasing amounts of water as it ages and gets crumbly. But if you're dealing with an old car and just want to get a few more years out of it, might as well go for it.

I have a question and you seem like the most knowledgeable guy. Can you completely encase the studs in spray foam? I am looking into staggered stud construction and I want a complete thermal break using closed cell. But I also plan on using zip R sheathing outside. Do you know if this is doable? Or do I have to leave some stud exposed to allow for drying.
@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
The technical answer is that one side of the stud should be exposed to allow for internal moisture to have a way out. I would chat with my supplier if I was doing that for you because Zip wall is not bonded to the stud. So that side in NOT 100% tight and can equalize. But would chat with the technical advisers.

Does it make any sense to do a layer of closed cell for vapor/moisture barrier, then open cell for the sound dampening properties? Or am I overthinking this as a lay-person? Would this cause issues with the chemistry of one causing the other to degrade?

I'm highly considering having my garage speay foamed. The only question I have would be one regarding prep work. If I'm having the inside of the roof done with closed foam would I need to put an extra decking on the inside? My concern is if I ever need to replace the plywood.
@christophergruenwald50542 жыл бұрын
No. If you ever need to replace any of the plywood from leaks then you are going to pry it off the foam with pry-bars and drop a new sheet in place. Using a synthetic breathable membrane over the roof instead of tar paper will help the roof dry out quickly if it ever gets damp so it won’t rot.

What about rodents, mice especiall? I’m planning to redo the isolation in the attick. Initially was done quite poorely with glass fiber without any vapor barrier. And I’m comsidering a hybrid setup, 10 cm of close cell with 5 cm of open cell. Would the close cell be able to withstand the rodents getting in the attick, or I better fill first all the tight spaces between the vertical walls and the wood roof structure with cement, concrete or tile adhesive? I know the the foam will be filling all the holes easily, but don’t know if the mice will be still chew the foam and get through. Thanks

I've looked at spray foam for my existing house. You know the companies that will spray foam in through your outside walls to insulate your house. My problem was, how do I do wiring on later jobs of the existing house if there's spray foam in the walls? In your opinion is it worth it to get those spray foam companies to do the walls in a finished house. I don't know if I want to use the company name so no one gets in trouble. But, one is showing a lot of advertising right now on TV for drafty homes, etc. Thank you for any advice.

I also spoke with my neighbor who was in construction his whole life and cringed when I asked him about the spray in foam systems. He said he wouldn't do it. If anything he said to take the trim off around the windows and get the correct foam spry in a can for windows and stop the leaking of air into the house. I think I'll start there. Is there any issues spraying with closed cell in a crawl space on the cinderblock foundation wall up and over the sill plate and in your attic floor as far as codes or reselling the house?
@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
Well I can only speak for my area. The answer is NO. The code allows it provided certain conditions are met. It is a very good way to go and the right way since the SPF will not rot, sag, become water logged etc. I have sprayed 1000s of CS in 16 years.

I'm actually seeing that this means spray foam may be ideal for my 2.5 car garage. Reason: rodent gaps, 2 car garage door will always be venting some air, window AC can cook the garage well, hanging furnace with a cut-through vent will help in the winter. Goal: spend more time in my garage with easier short-term climate and humidity control. Since the door is about 1/5 of the total perimeter, air exchange should still exist. There's minimal electrical along walls, mostly along roof studs instead, and no plumbing. I'm also not opposed to a 2 type solution.. like fiberglass ceiling and foam sides. Am I way off?

Rodents will still get into the spray foam - easily chewed. Sad but true - from experience.

Good info Mike. I'll be building a Nonvented attic with open cell spray foam under the roof deck (climate zone 3). It will have a standard enclosed soffit with nonperforated soffit planks. When the foam is applied under the roof deck, should the soffit be filled with foam?
@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
No. The foam follows the roof line inside the building and comes down on to the top plate via an insulation stop. Your choice in installation company should have all that detailed for you in stamped drawings that they use.

Nathan Donner Can anyone explain the e84 rating and what iS difference between class A? Also Mr. Jones if you read this would you think a 2x4 exterior walls wills 1 inch of foam on outside (zipr system) then spray cc foam 1 inches then fill with wet spray cellulose. Also using cc fosm to underside of roof sheeting. My big concern is fire and spreading quickly. Is E 84 rated cc foam a good choice concerning fire? Also (for under roof sheathing) would it be cost effective and more fire resistant to spray 2 to 3 inches off cc foam and then oc foam to get the required r value. Thanks for any help.

Is it safe to spray in January with temps at 10-20 degrees. I was reluctant in hiring a contractor because they wanted to spray in these conditions instead of putting me off till spring.
@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. We always have heat on and make sure that we are spraying above freezing. Most foam systems have cold temp versions that can be applied sub freezing, but it is complicated and does not work for the best when compared to warm applications. Of course if you are inside, heat on, substrate is above freezing with no condensation then yes the foam can be applied. Provided the guy has a warm trailer, heated hose, a good pattern and all his settings are within standard limits

@@SprayJones well the project was NOT new construction and involved them filling the void between interior wall and substrate. They had to drill numerous holes in the mortar joint of my brick then into the substrate they would inject spray foam. 3 holes ever 16” high/medium/low which made sense. Salesman stated the interior wall was conditioned enough to apply the foam even though the outside of the foam would be exposed to the non conditioned brick(backside). Didn’t like the fact that only half the foam would be exposed to a somewhat conditioned environment....thanks for you time and knowledge!
