Love the content.... A simple tip foamer to foamer. When spraying under a slab on gravel substrate it always helps to flash coat a light layer 1/4 to 1/2 inch on a large area, Then let set up to walk on and then apply second coat to complete final thickness. Helps stop foam from seeping into gravel and helps keep More consistent thickness. Patients is key while applying spray foam. 👌

Hi guys I live in Ireland and there is a problem with using spray foam insulation ,insurance and mortgage companies will not provide any service if it is used, because they say that the structure cannot be inspected, plumbing & electrical is obscured and difficult to check. We don't have termites but we do have woodworm they are tiny but love to eat everything for the roofing to the legs on your bed! So we're using the rolls of fiberglass or cutting the preformed sheets and then fitting them by hand. Ironically I can use it for my garden shed and on my freestanding garage because they are non-residential.

And maybe not get it done late on Friday, or any day that a holiday is the next day! Because if it’s not the owner, the worker just might slack off, which I’ve had happen on a project. Thankfully they were coming back to do another part of the house and they were able to correct all the mistakes. Plus I think you should go through and clean up all the debris yourself (nails, screws, drywall dust,sawdust, cellulose etc.) yourself, prior to them get into the house. That way you know you’re getting a good bond, because I’ve seen it being sprayed on brick dust, and cellulose and it just doesn’t stick.

I'm actually seeing that this means spray foam may be ideal for my 2.5 car garage. Reason: rodent gaps, 2 car garage door will always be venting some air, window AC can cook the garage well, hanging furnace with a cut-through vent will help in the winter. Goal: spend more time in my garage with easier short-term climate and humidity control. Since the door is about 1/5 of the total perimeter, air exchange should still exist. There's minimal electrical along walls, mostly along roof studs instead, and no plumbing. I'm also not opposed to a 2 type solution.. like fiberglass ceiling and foam sides. Am I way off?

I am looking into staggered stud construction and I want a complete thermal break using closed cell. But I also plan on using zip R sheathing outside. Do you know if this is doable? Or do I have to leave some stud exposed to allow for drying.
@SprayJones4 жыл бұрын
The technical answer is that one side of the stud should be exposed to allow for internal moisture to have a way out. I would chat with my supplier if I was doing that for you because Zip wall is not bonded to the stud. So that side in NOT 100% tight and can equalize. But would chat with the technical advisers.

What was that purple single component that was being sprayed on the cracks. I would rather put that through my sprayer than run through a couple dozen caulking tubes. For checking foam depth I made what I call a pokey thingy. Arrow shaft with an adapter pressed in so a sharpened piano wire from a hobby shop could be set it. There was a set screw so the depth of the foam would be at the adapter(piano wire would plunge full depth). Great for an installer to keep in the other hand while spraying. What foam was that purple foam? I love NCFI antimicrobial foam. It lays down like a 3 lb foam and you still get 4k+ bf out of a 1k lb kit.

It is funny how building ideology changes and develops over time. I can only talk about the snippet that is Europe and can say: We have been there, we have done that. All this artificial styrofoam, spray foam, glas-whool, rock-whool, ... you name it. Combine it with one of these high tech fresh air systems with all the gimmics in the world and you will get a perfectly insulated home that feels like.... living in a freaking thermos bottle =) I do understand the aspect of saving energy in a not so expensive manner, but I see a huge trend over here away from these artificial materials and back to what houses originally had been made off: Wood, clay, stone. Insulation to combine to it commonly are things like wood whool that you can get both loose and in slabs, cellulose, hamp or if more effectiveness is needed, then calcium-silicate. Everything that makes sure that a building is NOT air sealed, which is what we have been told to do for years now. You would be surprised how much better you feel by just sitting and breathing in a house made of natural materials ;)

You do really nice work. Thank you for the video. One quick question. Is there any benefit (say if you're building a tiny house and you want some structural support), in using the two-pound foam first, and then using the open-cell foam over it for the sound and r-value? I know the expense would be doubled but in a small space, I might want both properties. Just thought I'd ask. Sorry, if it's a dumb question or has been answered already.
@SprayJones3 жыл бұрын
It is not dumb, getting this question more and more so will have to do a video on it. You can... anything is possible. I always weigh the cost to benefit ratio and for open cell to have better sound properties you need 4 inches and up. So switch out to just get 2.5 inches is a waste IMO.
@themindunset3 жыл бұрын
@@SprayJones thank you. Makes sense when you drop in that 4 inches is needed for the sound benefits. All the best.
@christophergruenwald50542 жыл бұрын
@@themindunset like he was saying, you can. I don’t personally like switching back and forth all the time between open and closed cell foam with my rig. Kind of a pain and there is always wasted chemical that you can’t do anything with. In a 2x6 wall I’ve done 3 inches of closed cell and then a 1.5 inch Rockwool AFB over the top for sound. I’ve had customers that have put a 2x4 fiberglass batt over the same as well for sound and additional R. In South Dakota here the majority of what you will see installed in closed cell foam. And actually on my garage roof I did closed cell with about 12 inches of open cell over the top of it for maximum R value at lower cost. And about 6 inches of closed cell in the walls. A solid wall is in fact better, more to adhere to. We have had people use cardboard in areas where it will not rot away to be a temporary backer for getting SPF in place.

A really great video you did. I have a pole barn in Northern Tennessee with metal siding, wood studs and beams. What would you recommend for the walls and the ceiling. It is a 50x30 with 12 ft walls what is an approximate cost I should be looking at? Thanks!

When a spray foam contractor probes for depth with a shank, doesn’t that pierce the air and vapor barrier?

I've looked at spray foam for my existing house. You know the companies that will spray foam in through your outside walls to insulate your house. My problem was, how do I do wiring on later jobs of the existing house if there's spray foam in the walls? In your opinion is it worth it to get those spray foam companies to do the walls in a finished house. I don't know if I want to use the company name so no one gets in trouble. But, one is showing a lot of advertising right now on TV for drafty homes, etc. Thank you for any advice.

@@SprayJones I just watched it and you answered my questions and concerns with those systems. I also spoke with my neighbor who was in construction his whole life and cringed when I asked him about the spray in foam systems. He said he wouldn't do it. If anything he said to take the trim off around the windows and get the correct foam spry in a can for windows and stop the leaking of air into the house. I think I'll start there. Again, thank you for you advice.

What about cleaning chipping paint off a concrete floor prior to spraying (we are installing floor joists over an existing screened porch room that has a concrete slab and converting it to a master bedroom). Does the surface of the concrete need to be very clean?

Clean enough that it'll stick. Get rid of what is scaling.

Isn't that stuff EXTREMELY flammable? Someone said that stuff burns like gasoline if there is a fire, making the house become fully engulfed far faster than if fiber glass or rock wool is used.

I'm highly considering having my garage speay foamed. The only question I have would be one regarding prep work. If I'm having the inside of the roof done with closed foam would I need to put an extra decking on the inside? My concern is if I ever need to replace the plywood.
@christophergruenwald50542 жыл бұрын
No. If you ever need to replace any of the plywood from leaks then you are going to pry it off the foam with pry-bars and drop a new sheet in place. Using a synthetic breathable membrane over the roof instead of tar paper will help the roof dry out quickly if it ever gets damp so it won’t rot.

I don't know what that purple stuff was... however I have never, not one time, done a remodel or fix on a house that had spray foam that the foam wasn't at least 1/2 inch to a full 2 inches away from the sides of the wall studs. You can see bits and pieces where it was clearly sprayed fully into the wall studs but over time has shrunk inside the wall. I'd never use that stuff unless I could be convinced I wouldn't be re-doing it in 5 years because it shrunk in the wall. Sorry mate.
@SprayJones3 жыл бұрын
You are generalizing from a specific problem. Adhesion to the substrate is VERY important. You have described a failure but what you have NOT done is give any clues as to what went wrong and why. Instead you just ban the use of. Even space shuttle challenger got an investigation. Foam sticks, it has to, otherwise we wouldn't be allowed in the building code. Someone messed up and it is down to 3 simple things.
@timothymcrae773 жыл бұрын
@@SprayJones Yes, you're right to eschew generalization and I agree. Thus my statement 'unless I could be convinced I wouldn't be redoing it in five years...' That being said, 100% failure rate thus far as far as I've seen doesn't speak well for the product. Wood walls, concrete slabs, cinderblock walls they've all had huge air gaps on every job I've been to that had it used.
@SprayJones3 жыл бұрын
@@timothymcrae77 Very well. The testing is there (Canada) for adhesion, cohesion, dimensional stability. All of those pertain to the foam staying in place. When applying surface contaminates are what most frequently will cause a failure. So it you want I have a video on basement adhesion test report, or watch "Trouble with SPF what 5 things do we test for", also have a video on structural strength added. These may help... Cheers.

Are any isocyanate free ? The auto body industry is starting to get isocyanate free primers . Many talented friends of mine had quit the industry because of isocyanate poisoning and sensitization

Not yet. Iso sensitization always comes from being around it unprotected......and smoking.
