It all depends on what games you've seen him in and what teams you usually watch. A few years ago when he was fighting for that big contract he was often dominant on defense. I saw a couple games against the Wizards where Wall and Beal wouldn't even attempt to drive while Whiteside was anywhere near the paint, and for good reason. Having said that Gobert has had the same effect. Whiteside still pretty regularly has a 20 rebound game which is something we almost never see out of Gobert.

To be clear. Me saying “Gobert is DPOY” refers to his past awards. Not his candidacy this year. This is about learning by comparing Gobert vs Whiteside not the 2020 DPOY race. I'm hoping young centers looking to get better can learn from this video.
@misterputscalls59025 жыл бұрын
But, since you mentioned the 2019-20 DPOY race: Gobert's candidacy this year is top notch, and most people pretty far behind. Antetokounmpo is a great defensive player and Simmons has certainly improved a great deal along with Adebayo. All three of these guys can guard 1-5 as well as anyone this year. Davis and Isaac have also been excellent, although Isaac has fallen prey to injury lately. But, Gobert is loved by some advanced statistics pretty fierce, that new stat Raptor by 538 has him so far in front it's really ridiculous. I don't think he suffers from voter fatigue and wins his 3rd.

I'd imagine the reasons are similar. He doesn't box out and his effort is inconsistent. Even worse than Whiteside he goes through quarters where he barely runs back on defense at all. That being said, there's value in his size and rim protection, so i definitely wouldn't call his defense poor.

His other huge deficiency is in smart rebounding. He's good at rebounding because he's fucking massive and can reach higher than pretty much anyone on the floor, but he almost never is disciplined about boxing out, which means if the ball is too far away for him to grab, it often is easy for the opponents to get the offensive board. Portland is currently allowing the most offensive rebounds in the league, at 11.8 a game, and allows the most rebounds overall, at 47.9.
@t4d0W4 жыл бұрын
With the league being more about long shots, boxing out is more pivotal than straight up trying to rebound since if the big man can't pull it down, they could deny others from getting it and their more active wing/perimeter teammate who can handle get it. Brook Lopez has 4.6 rpg but his boxing out is pivotal to just let Giannis pull down defensive rebounds (team leading btw) so he can outrun everyone in transition and flush it down for a quick score.

Peer pressure on teams and the culture of a organization plays a huge factor. In established teams there usually is a next man up mentality and internal competition for playing time can be a huge factor. Also if your best player gets away with murder on a team it is hard to get others to buy in. If your best player and leaders are your hardest workers it sets a great platform for development. Also the players internal drive to win is probably the biggest factor, unfortunately some players only truly care about individual numbers, highlights, and getting the bag.
@chriisisaman55 жыл бұрын
Gobert is a positional defender (meaning his blocks under-estimate his actual defense ex: Zaza, Chandler, Duncan). Whiteside is the opposite as his blocks over-estimate his actual defense, ex: Mozgov, Dalembert. Players like Whiteside predicate on athleticism, and are exponentially vulnerable to diminishing values of return as they age.

I think the difference between Whiteside and Gobert is that the first(Whiteside) doesn't wants to play defence, he doesn't tries to use his mind on defense. It seems that he is bored on these situations . In the other hand gobert knows exactly what to do in order to helps his teams to win. They are differentiated by their temper on defense.

I’m plugged into NBA analysis and the numbers and standings, but I don’t have time to watch much game action. But, today I had the chance to watch a Jazz game and actually see Gobert at work. He was clearly a serious obstacle. Jokic did pretty well but you could tell there were no easy buckets. Gobert was hustling every play and obviously takes pride in shutting down his opponent. That’s what makes a great defensive player.

Let's make something absolutely clear: Gobert is surrounded by good and average defensive players while Whiteside is surrounded by Portland's horrendous defense. When the video shows the utah vs Portland game and Coach Daniel is talking about the "jab step," you can see the rest of his team with a foot in the key, like you're supposed to. When it shows the same type of play when Whiteside is on defense, nobody on the Blazers is remotely interested in defense EXCEPT for Whiteside. Just goes to show how important effort is to playing defense. You could be an athletic guy that is 7 foot tall with a 7'7" wingspan but if you aren't mentally engaged at all times and have that awareness to change momentum, you are no better than a statue that everyone just passes by. And this aspect is more important playing the wing and center positions in the NBA because they are the most active in creating opportunities for stops on offense.

Is Whiteside anywhere near as good as Gobert? No. But he's also playing on a Blazer's team that is weak defensively, and he's asked to do an awful lot. He's the Blazers only real rebounder, and he's been forced to become a key part of the Blazers offense, playing the roll man in the pick and roll more than all but a handful of other bigs. Is he DPOY material? No. Could he be a lot better on the defensive end if he brought more effort and attention? Yes. But he's still a good defender. He just isn't quick enough, mentally or physically, to be a top-notch defender. No slight against him. It's the NBA and only the best of the best of the best can be Rudy Gobert.

One comment: I didn't have the time to include it in the video, but I didn't mention Whiteside's quickness, agility as a weakness compared to Gobert because when he's engaged his feet and anticipation on switches is actually kind of impressive. There was one play I saw where he moved his feet well and contained Luka on a switch. I just think he has no desire to put in the defensive effort on the perimeter.

Hey, coach Daniel. Thanks for the insightful videos. What do you reckon of Marcus Smart as a possible DPOY candidate?

Probably not this year. Hard for guards to have the same impact as taller players

Day One fan here "OhCanada". Who do you think is worse? Drummond or Whiteside? And can you do one on Drummond, I watched him play against the Cavs recently when he only got 8 rebounds and he was absolutely terrible.

Then again whiteside was on an island out of the pick and roll. Gobert has a team mate right next to him clogging the lane

Having watched the majority of Blazer games this year, I love that the Blazers have him. Blazers haven't had a decent rim protector for years now. That being said, his defense and effort can be pretty lazy. I still love watching him play this year for the Blazers.
@ReCharredSigh5 жыл бұрын
I know you meant to highlight whiteside's bad defense, but i hate watching his offense too; it's rare for him to turn down a shot to get a teammate a better one. A lotta times, it looks like he wants to shoot as soon as he touches the ball.
@nathanlawson3135 жыл бұрын
Reggie Jackson on pistons is the PG equivalent of Whiteside. Always stands directly in front of ball, flat footed, gets blown by easily and is in chase mode BEHIND the ball rest of possession. Drives me insane.
@valleyofsin4 жыл бұрын
Whiteside only shows effort in contract years or when a top tier team is in town.
@full6330name Жыл бұрын
Great defense is all about small little things that trough the game seems normal,like every player can do that but in reality these small little things cane often be a difference between good or bad defense. Playing really good defense is usualy boring for most fans. Marc Gasol was amazing at this. Just constantly in the right position

Blocked shots don't make you a good defensive player- Whiteside is just like Marcus Camby back in the day, sacrificing team defense and positioning to try for blocks all the time
@ItsBiox5 жыл бұрын
this aint 2k where your stats decide if you'll win the awards, to become the defensive player of the year is not just based on stats it based on how a player impact the defense.

Per36 blocks, Per100 (Net +/- & blocks) and Advanced Stats say he's better than Drummond for the Lakers defense right now. And, SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. Or, they could bring Javale back via a 3-team deal. Update (30 minutes later) I just researched Myles Turner for the Lakers. He's The One.
@ninjachannel0074 жыл бұрын
I know I said something similar on the MJ video, but one only needs to look at Portland's overall defensive rankings and record to know why Whiteside isn't the DPOY. He gets lots of blocks that don't equal wins, just like in MIami.

Whiteside lazy, which is sad because he has potential to be a top 5 center. He has great length and show good touch around the rim. Idk what happened with him

I been sayin he’s the reason Portland is underperforming this season. Then ppl be like “BuT hE bLoCkS aLl ThEsE sHoTs.” The box score doesn’t tell u the whole story.
@online_soup5 жыл бұрын
Portland’s mainly been underperforming due to the injuries to Nurkic, Hood, Collins, and Skal to be honest. Whiteside is generally an on and off player who sometimes comes up big and other times looks completely out of it.
@t4d0W5 жыл бұрын
@@online_soup Def Nurkic, Hood and Collins. Those 3 being out tested the Blazers depth chart to the point where they gotta give bigger minutes to their young guys who don't need it yet and having to sign Melo. The team was ready to deal with Whiteside for the year because he's an expiring and gave up little on the trade (Meyers Leonard) just to get a guy they can play until Nurkic gets healthy this year.
@jeanu58204 жыл бұрын
Whiteside is a great defender, he has always been a paint defender. Watching Rudy Gobert against Hassan I can see that both of them don’t like nor want to press out on pick and roll threes. Whiteside is on a brand new team with a new system and defensive scheme.
@sonjaystarr6165 жыл бұрын
your analysis is somewhat lacking, you have not included who is Hassan guarding, is that a good shooter? is that a good player going to the basket? can it should outside? smh, those are factors on how you react as a player on how to defend. the mere fact that he blocks shots on his zone then its a good defense, look also at his team mates if they are really good defense players also.
