Ash, without a doubt, is the reason old school became what it is today. The game could have more or less died and the player base would be minimal. Ash is what Jim Collins calls a level 5 leader/employee, someone who is, unquestionably almost solely responsible for the success of the company. From bringing player involvement to an all time high and dedicating his personal time to be a better employee for the game he loves so that we all benefit to the best of his ability, to personally paying woox for being exactly the type of player jagex requires to further the game by thinking so far outside the box it hurts, if there's a hall of fame for runescape, Ash should be the first name on the wall.

Before the update, our clan, God Hunters, and our alliance did a 1000 vs. 998 wildy battle vs another clan (I believe we locked down all but two of the server slots). Lagged out the whole server soooo bad with all the stacks of people getting ice barraged. After the update, we went into clan wars, realized our clan/game enjoyment was going to die off over time, and just coasted the slow burnout. I and my clan definitely hated Jagex at the time for ruining our game. This is the first I've ever heard these details/the real reasons why they did what they did. I remember a 13 year old me was so upset when Jagex took away the wilderness. I was one of those folks who thought it was just Jagex trying to troll us like some kind of big brother bullying us for no reason. I didn't quit the game but I did feel like it was a huge part of the game that was removed and it was almost heartbreaking that the wild went from a huge battlefield to basically empty overnight. We used to sit east of the varrock castle and recruit randoms for our little roam team and we would just go out with the crappiest gear like some guy would use wizard robe top green hide bottoms and only use a dds with no cape or boots... Back then you just used what you had in your bank, there wasn't any grand exchange so you couldn't fill all of your equipment slots most of the time, plus that was back in the elvemage days where a guy with ice barrage and a magic shortbow was basically the king of the wild.

I still think Jagex should have been 100% transparent about why they removed free trade. I just don't understand why they didn't. They could have saved themselves so many headaches. Modern Jagex 100% would have been transparent about something like the credit card chargeback issue if that happened nowadays.
@_Dio_Brando_69 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, modern Jagex is only modern Jagex because they learned from all those past mistakes. Nowadays they know better than to pull the rug out from under their community without explanation, the same can't be said for back then. This video also paints a clear border between Jagex devs, who actively play the game and engage with the community, and Jagex upper management who see quarterly earnings and financial crises and ultimately call the shots, but don't necessarily see the game or the players like the devs do. They didn't understand how bad they were fucking up back then by keeping their playerbase in the dark while thoroughly shafting them.

The way they should have dealt with the trade limit is to have it in place for people who aren't friends, then set a time requirement for 48 hours after becoming friends with someone to remove that limit and keep the data for it stored for 7 days after becoming friends. You have 48 hours as bots are usually caught up before that, especially when generated for transferring gold, while you can also set up a system to flag accounts suddenly getting a big gold amount to it at a lower level, making bots and sellers have to risk more. If they really wanted, they could also say that the account needs to have said items / gold for 24 hours before being able to trade it again as a way to prevent it. Yeah, it's a minor inconvenience to players, but still better than the cap we got back then. Especially if bossing and meaning to give the drop to your friend, you still know your getting it. The log is to be able to track gold sales and to link accounts / mules and people purchasing the gold. Just to add a little safety to it as well, you could also set a second pin or use the bank pin to confirm trades over the regular trade limit, just for security reasons.

I remember when I first played Corsair curse when I came back to osrs after a long break and played w the music on and the “On the Shore” track was SO beautiful just for a random osrs quest I had to look it up on the osrs wiki and when I saw it was Ash who made the song I was gagged. He really is something else ❤

dude hooked me up in runescape as kid. he gave me a bunch of a loot and stuff because i couldnt afford to be a member because my parents wouldnt let me use their card lol. i remember thinking he was really nice and that was our only interaction. it may be small but to a kid with no friends and abusive parents it meant a lot. i honestly think it might have been the first time someone was ever nice to me without there being a catch.

I knew Mod Ash was such a great asset to Jagex but I had no idea the full extent of this. WOW! Mod Ash really is a genius.

gold buying is againts jagex tos. jagex: so we decided to sell ingame cash ourselves. gambling is against TOS jagex: so we decided to add gambling ourselves. maybe this is why ash left...

15:55 Anyone know who that mod is to the right of Mod Ash with the beard? I feel like I know, but I can’t remember 🤔

Seems like one of the most dedicated men to the job I've ever seen. Can't believe he got that type of treatment from an HR lady that probably knew nothing about the game, when ash knew he was one if if not the main person for the job.

I have asked ashe I think 2 genuine questions, and having him answer both quite quickly and with really good info/reasoning. Always been such an amazing Mod and always had my respect. He will retire a legend one day.

Ash was the only mod who used to answer to me on Twitter, was amazing to see that he did take time to answer to tweets

Ash is one of the true Suns of RS. If only the rest of us could be so grossly incandescent.

Ngl I think many people forget how fun early days of clan wars was I remember FCs rising in the hierarchy within a few matches only to fall minutes later to another up and coming clan and everyone would pile on that leader and spam chat to join Ahhh simpler times I miss it so much

Nearly half a million tweets. Good lord. He went above and beyond in all ways. Mod Ash is an invaluable asset. That kind of dedication is not replaceable.

The first part brought back cringe memories for me. When you could bill your RS membership by phone, I would go down to the local gas station and ask to use their phone. It would give you a pin which you wrote down and then I would go to my friends house or back home and log in to get membership. I did that for an entire year and feel so bad now. Addiction to RS is real and I'm glad i learned that at 14 instead of learning it after maxing out their 3rd ironman like some ppl do.

Ash better be making at least 80k/yr us dollars because this man is the reason runescape doesn't feel like other games. Made with love.

The company that is selling the god wars statues seemed like such a brilliant idea to me, especially running their promos through runescape streamers. Then it occurred to me that Jagex is going to file an IP lawsuit against them if they get big enough.
