Why Russia is Building an Arctic Silk Road [4k] |
A Russian oil tanker crossed the Arctic in 2017 without the need for an icebreaker. That's a great accomplishment. The journey takes only 19 days to connect Asia and Europe, compared to 48 days for the previous journey. It usually takes for ships to go from China to Rotterdam, one of Europe's largest ports. Warming climates are melting the ice caps, making this stretch of water accessible for the first time in human history, making it easier to transport the fossil fuels that caused the ice to melt in the first place. We've never had an irony-heavy Ocean commerce route before. Right now, Russia is during a tremendous development campaign to stake its claim.
