During an traditional evening address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow plans to mobilize more troops for a major offensive. Shortly before New Year's Eve, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov had warned Russians the Kremlin was working on another conscription drive, planning to impose martial law and close the border to Russian men to prevent them from leaving.
Russia's partial mobilization, launched on September 21, 2022, has not yet been officially concluded. This is only the case when Russian President Vladimir Putin designs a decree to this end, which so far he has not.

Well, you know, for example, the German government does not agree with you. Even today they do not give asylum to Russian people with the wording "We see no danger for you in Russia and the fact of mobilization does not mean risks for you." Ie war is not a risk to life according to their logic. That is, this is happening now, the German government does not give asylum. What do you think they said before the war? They always said no no no no and no. About a few percent, I believe, of those who applied for asylum received asylum.

Before long, the young women will start leaving the country as well. And even the ones who stay are likely to have fewer children because of the sharp economic downturn, in a country that already had a pretty low birth rate. NA, Europe and all western countries should throw open their arms to Russian men aged 18 - 35. These are prime working years. They are young and will contribute to the European economy before retiring. Also, this deprives Russia of a future. This hollows out an already aging and terrible Russian demographic. This hobbles Russia's ability to fight a war. This isn't Russia's war. This is Putin's war. If a few million Russian men leave and settle elsewhere, that is a benefit to the rest of the world.

This is exactly the question in my mind, too. Russia has established "pockets" of Russians in its neighbouring countries .. slowly but steadily increasing its cultural influence. One has to monitor the Russian population closely - maybe not give them any right to vote for a longer time - but i don tknow if that is legal to do so. It may (likely) be viewed as xenophobic in that case .. i dont know.

Is it wrong to say that the 27-year-old guy who fleed Russia is a coward? That if everyone who fleed Russia because they were afraid and didn't believe in Russia's cause after being drafted went to Ukraine instead and fought on the Ukrainian side then that would be actually supporting Ukraine instead of hiding in a different country and just saying that they care?

Sources from both inside Russia and outside agree the "mobilization" will involve conscripting doctor, nurses, first aid personnel, ambulance personnel, mechanics, all sorts of occupations, along with men owing for child support, bank loans, debts. The medical exemptions are much less after the changes just before the new year.

what and are doctors and nurses immune from being enslaved, why should others fight for them? All must defend their nation. Navalny tried to help Russia escape Putin's grip...look where Navalny sits today, that's how much the Russian care. The only time you hear a Russian speak out is when its his/her own butt on the line. Its not about democracy, its about their personal freedom, that is it!

Turkey has limited Russians to a two month Visa...we are completely overrun by Russians who were so desperate for a place to live in Turkey that they have agreed to pay any amount. Unfortunately, apartment owners now only want to rent to Russians and the rest of the population can't afford the new prices. They are detested in Turkey.

Damn it, DW, I would rather watch a similarly heartfelt piece of journalism about Ukrainian men sealed within Ukrainian borders and stripped from a right to leave their country or avoid forceful mobilisation. I'd watch a video about them crossing icy rivers and snowy mountains to get to safety. Officially, to the day 12 have died, unofficially, the toll is much higher. Highlight that struggle as well to balance your reporting.

Its not politically useful: Russians deserting makes them look weak towards Ukraine and its rightful defense Ukranians deserting makes the war harder to justify and Russia will abuse that 100% Forcing someone to fight is never good, but on this political scenario, they will NEVER show ukranians fleeing for fear of looking weak and thus demoralizing the west, which is what Putin wants. Unbiased reporting doesnt work in such a polarized world...
