Sacha Baron Cohen has been messing with people and playing oddball characters for over a decade. He made us laugh with Borat, he made us giggle with Bruno and he made us cackle with The Ali G Show. Now with his new show, 'Who Is America', he's continuing to do what he does best! So let's jump in and discuss 'Pseudo-Realism' and why he's so good at what he does.

I was impressed by the one anecdote about how he was portraying borat at a wine tasting and borat was gulping instead of sipping and eventually passed out from over drinking and the camera crew and production people were panicking thinking when he wakes up he’ll drop character. Yet he lurches back to life in full character as borat shouting “YES MORE WINE” with out missing a beat.

I agree, he is a genius. In Ali G he did a question to a "animals' lover", would you kill a chicken? No. And would you kill a chicken in order to safe other chicken? That question is more than comedy, is almost philosophical.

niels, Cohen is trying to get them to quantify what it is that is objectively valuable about the animal's life. Is it the chicken's character that makes him or her more valuable than an other? How do we grade a chicken's worth, if not by the kilo? What if the first chicken had the second chicken as a hostage, and was threatening to peck him to death? Would it be OK to kill the first chicken then? If you say 'yes', then you have to agree that a chicken's personality constitutes part of its value. If you say 'no', then it's just every chicken for itself, and I really don't think *absolute feudal chicken madness* is any way for farmyard animals to live. The humour comes from the juxtaposition between the idiotic character of Ali G, and the incredibly complex, philosophical nature of the answer to that question. Does that make sense? (I don't expect you to suddenly find it funny, but I hope you understand). Cheers.

@Ninja Squirrel Ali G basically went through a list of meat-based foods asking a vegan if he would eat them, the vegan increasingly getting more offended started saying things like "oh no not even if you paid me 1 million dollars" and then finally Ali g asks would you eat a chicken (presumably already dead) to save the life of another chicken. At this point the vegan had backed himself into his own made corner and had no idea what to reply

You hold this view because you "lived in iran for a year as of 2 months ago". Wow, what an insightful and thoroughly justified viewpoint you have! You sound like you may be an expert on Iran, maybe you could write a book! I can picture it now. Your literary masterpiece, titled "Iran sucks dik" will have the title scrawled on the cover (Graffitti style) using a wide tipped Sharpie. The book opens to a single page of a poorly sketched map of Iran with a sketch of a cock and balls in the middle.

Sacha should have won Best Actor for Borat. The few minutes we see of, for example, an American politician showing his arse and running arse first at a man shouting USA, is the result of hours of great acting, never losing character, never letting the act slip in what must be very hard circumstances. I agree his scripted movies have been rather poor, but he's great at what he does best, and Who Is America is what he does best... Great to see him back doing this. Above all I admire Sacha's incredible courage. Again and again he enters groups and even crowds of people who strongly oppose what his character is going to say and do. Revealing their prejudice and often invoking their anger. He never backs off, holds on to his outcome, always goes first and is a true leader. Sacha boldly goes where no one has gone before. Second, I admire his ability to always remain in character. Even for days in a row! Third, his wit and ability to improvise. Whatever happens, he responds in a funny way never missing a beat. Last but not least, I like his higher values like honesty and equality of people.

i loved borat. i despised bruno the first time i saw the movie. i didnt get it at all. i didnt realize that its a prank, and only key members of the cast and crew are in on it. once i realized that these reactions from people were real, i became a HUGE fan. ive watched every episode of ali g, seen all of his movies and appearances. i honestly liked his older material the best, the more recognizable he became, the less acheivable his comedy became.

I really want to do something like this, except my idea is to have some sort of mockumentary about an alien crash landing on Earth trying to find its "leader". It'll have our character going through every major superpower (except North Korea, for obvious reasons) to figure out who rules the world. That's all I got.

Eric Andre has admitted that he takes what people like SBC do one step further on his show. So, SBC often does mock interviews, where Eric Andre does mockeries of mock interviews. Thats the whole point of his show, to mock the fake interview genre. Not to insult it in anyway, just because its as ridiculous as he possibly can. Like, SBC asks legitmate questions even if he is playing a really stupid character, that character would be stupid enough to asks those questions. , most of the questions Eric Andre asks his guests are pure nonsense His street sketches are straight out of SBC playbook

Coming back to this after Borat 2, I’m seeing a lot of people bring up the character’s blatant hatred towards jews. Can’t truly comment on it, as I’m not jewish myself, but to me it seemed like he was always showing how ridiculous anti-Semitic people are. And to me thats such a great way to battle people who share those views. If you can’t have a logical debate with them, simply point and laugh at how dumb they look and sound. People have the full right to take offense to Borat’s views, but I’ve always seen it as something similar to Mel Brooks. Baron Cohen gets more flak for it simply because Borat is pseudo-realism, like you said. Theres a discussion to be had there, but most people would write it off as hate speech and go to bed happy. And that makes me sad.

SBC is very good at what he does but he did't invent the idea, in fact he is following in a long tradition here in the UK of mocking people who think they are important and he takes it to another level. Dennis Pennis was so obviously SBC's inspiration... taking to the red carpet as a British Journalist and mocking celebrities with cryptic questions. SBC's interview with the Beckhams is legendary.
