In porn, you see actual intercourse because that's the purpose of the film and that's what the stars are there for. This same rule applies to standard production films. You go to the movie to watch the story unfold, to watch the interplay between characters, and if you can't believe or be absorbed into the charisma or the plot the actors portray, then that generally means that either the plot sucked, or that the actors were garbage. "I don't need to see real, I want to watch the story unfold!" Is quite possibly the dumbest statement ever made. What is the point of watching a story unfold if you can't feel attached to the characters or if need be, detached, even hate. Actors are not payed to give us stale performances and cheap one-liners, they are payed to make us believe the unbelievable.

Norm Macdonald told a story about Andy Kaufman that perfectly sums him up to me. Andy was doing a purposely awful stand up set in a club and after 15 minutes the crowd boo'd him off the stages. The MC came up on stage and calmed the crowd down saying, "Come on guys! This is Andy Kaufman! He is a comedy genius!". This relaxed the crowd enough that they let him back up on stage. He came back out, did the exact same 15 minutes of material they all hated from before and left them a snarling angry mob by the time he left. Lengendary.

I think a great counter-example to this is Heath Ledger as the Joker. Back when the movie came out, there was all kinds of talk about how he'd "lost himself in the role", that it was the reason he died, etc. But from every account I've ever heard from everyone who worked with him on that movie, he was a pleasure to work with and was respectful of everyone. He definitely put a lot of work into getting under the skin of the character, being very hands-on with all sorts of aspects like the costume and makeup and even creating a journal that he wrote in-character. But he definitely understood the boundary between reality and fiction, and wasn't acting like a lunatic towards everybody else on set. I also definitely don't think the role is what led to his death, and many of his co-stars get very upset at the fact that people have said that. Everything Ledger did was in service of giving a great performance and elevating the movie he was a part of, not in service of his ego and personal bullshit. And the funny thing is, Leto ended up going overboard with his "method acting" in the exact same role years later, and it resulted in a terrible performance.

Speaking of Leto, I was shocked by how horrendous his role as the Joker was as it was the antithesis, the polar opposite of his lesser-known performance in the film Chapter 27 in which he played Mark Chapman who shot and killed John Lennon. It was, in my humble, 2-cent opinion, one of the best yet most underrated cinematic performances I've ever seen. To give some perspective, Leto was so dedicated to this role, that over a short span of several weeks, he managed to fatten himself up, adding 40 pounds of pure body fat (it's been several years so I may not be correct as to the exact total number of pounds) by melting Ben & Jerry's ice cream in the microwave and chugging it, day after day, for weeks on end. When asked if he enjoyed being free to consume copious amounts of ice cream each day, Leto stated something along the lines of it being a torturous, barbaric process that he would recommend to no one. Anyhow, it was a remarkable performance in which, unlike Jim Carey in Man on the Moon, Leto portrayed Mark so well, instead of viewing a one-dimensional "crazy" "villain" that is so common in Hollywood today, we got to see the main character in depth, as someone who was entangled in a battlefield that was his mind where a tug of war of sorts plays out between good and evil. We get to see both his admiration yet contempt for Lennon. He played this so well, that I was surprised to find myself wishing the good side would have won, almost to the point of being sympathetic but not so much for the wicked Mark had become but for the good soul that could have been....and it's upon experiencing that depth and array of feelings that you know you've just watched a solid performance.

I always found Jerry Lawler's perspective on the whole thing interesting - because apparently Jim Carrey was a complete prick to him, in the name of "method acting" - which really confused Lawler, because Andy Kaufman understood that wrestling is scripted (or "a work", as they'd put it) and he always was great friends with Lawler whenever the cameras were off - where as apparently, Carrey bought into the whole wrestling feud and just figured Kaufman was a dick to the poor guy 24/7. It just goes to show how Carrey misunderstood Kaufman.

the reason Jim didn't work as Andy Kaufman is that Andy played his bits straight and didn't spotlight the punchline, Jim Carrey gives you a 15 minute warning on every punchline with a weird facial expression and an immediate change in cadence, it's almost like he's giving you a laughter prompt because without it you wouldn't notice there's a joke hiding somewhere in what he said.

Imagine making a movie about Churchill but casting an actor who knows nothing about Churchill, how he behaved or his mannerisms. All you end up with is an actor reading quotes and doing little more than a terrible impression....sorta like the cast of Many Saints of Newark, except they suffered from over-analyzing their roles. Those guys coulda benefited from just stepping into character and running with it and making the younger mobsters their own characters, instead of trying to emulate the actors from the show but 30 years younger.

Andy would even sometimes break character (laugh) while doing some of his antics. He was clearly a performance artist doing anti-comedy and even anti-cultural statements. This is pretty clear in his SNL skits and even Andy's Funhouse along with David Letterman Show. There were many people who "got" him, as evidenced by laughter in the audience and his decade plus popularity. Today, people would call him a "comics comic", but he was much more than that. Simply put, Jim Carrey's portrayal made him seem self-absorbed and always serious when in reality, Andy was essentially never serious and was always doing a performance. There are some times Andy would actually break character, and those are the times Jim should have looked at. Perhaps it is much easier said than done today, however, since we can easily watch and read everything about Kaufman when in '99 you couldn't.

A good method actor, finds out everything they can about the character and studies them. I don't think Jim did that, he seemed to portray Andy they way he thought Andy was instead of finding out how Andy truly was. As a result, Jim's version of Andy was only mediocre.

But contrary to popular belief, Heath Ledger did not stay in character the whole time during production. When he needed to block a scene or take direction, he would drop the character and make sure that everyone felt safe and comfortable with what they were doing. He would even look to his fellow actors to collaborate and share ideas with, even if they weren't a huge part in the film. That's the difference between a professional and whatever it was Jim was doing during this production.

The problem of method acting is that most actors just ACT like the person they’re portraying rather than DO what the person would have done. Take taxi driver as an example. Robert dinero didn’t just act like a low class taxi driver, he actually went out, got a job as a driver, DID the job he signed up for, And used that experience to further his understanding of the character. Jim carry was a carrot top level comedian who did good impressions. He took no initiative to experience what Andy had to experience.

as an actor I love him, I really do, but he's obviously got extremely bad mental health problems and it shows. in a sense that jim has been an utter ass to people and Jim and Andy is likely just the surface of that. Unfortunately you should not greatly look up to a celebrity without seeing their flaws with the inevitability they will disappoint you. His behavior around the time of the Jim and Andy promotional cycle for festivals was also quite awful and he was openly being rude to reporters and interviewers, acting like a pretentious douche with his spiritual "I don't exist, I'm just a character" doctrine. You did nothing on the Jim vs Lawler stuff which was INSANE. He tortured the guy on set to the point Lawler assaulted him several times. He kept going on with Lawler on the set even though Lawler was there and telling him that him and Andy actually had a very different relationship. That was hard to watch for me. Jim got it in his mind that what you saw from the Andy and Lawler bits was the real way they did things off camera even though Lawler was there to tell him otherwise. He non stop antagonized Lawler on set doing quite literally almost everything you can imagine including spitting on him on set. Jim would follow him around shit talking him and throwing stuff at him, throwing water on him and insulting his girlfriend. What kills me about this is Lawler was probably excited for the experience of being in a Hollywood movie and just got downright harrassed and belittled every second of every day from some jumped up pretentious Hollywood asshole. EVEN THOUGH Jim Carrey was told from FIRST HAND experience that Lawler and Andy were very polite and nice to each other Jim Carrey for some fucked reason thought he knew how Andy Kaufman acted around someone better than the person that experienced that first hand. That right there turned me inside out with rage. The entire documentary could have been about that shit and you didn't even mention it so I was fairly disappointed if I am being honest.

I had dinner with Andy and his parents one late night in the seventies (after one of his shows at the Comedy Club). Foreword present day, i’ve read the book and seen the movie. I think Carey’s performance was so spot on so many times that I felt like I was reliving my experience all over again, and it explained a lot of Andy’s behavior that night. I also saw Tony Clifton the very first night he on appeared stage. I’m sure, now, that *Tony* was actually Andy’s partner. My friend and I had 1st row tickets at that show, and all we could say for days was “I can’t believe that was Andy- the look in his eyes was SOOO different.”

I don't think the jokes work. It's not because they're not funny, it's because they're completely out of place for the format. This isn't a comedy show, it's an analytical show - and regardless of what anyone says, it's extremely annoying when you're interested in a topic of discussion and someone cuts into the middle of it to make a 2-MINUTE LONG meta non-sequitur about the narrator's relationship with their grandfather. You haven't done anything to set up the narrator as a character (so we have no reason to care completely ruining the point of the joke) and it completely halts the flow of the video to a dead stop. I always got the feeling, and I think people who knew him agree, that Andy Kaufman was someone completely different in his public life than he was in private. He and Jerry Lawler were always truly good friends acting out a vicious rivalry. Jim Carrey only knew of Andy's public persona and didn't capture anything of who Andy was in private.

I was a big fan of Jim Carey back in the day; I liked his fresh faced boyishness; he always seemed like the kind of guy you'd like to have as a neighbor or be friends with, and he has turned out some really extraordinary acting performances. I especially liked him when he was a regular on " In living color". However, I'm old enough to have grown up watching Andy Kaufman. I saw every episode of Taxi, saw him on talk shows, in comedy clubs, etc. So, coming from that Era, and mindset, which is the polar opposite of today ( Heck, you couldn't make a show like " In Living Color " today.) I knew his body language, facial expressions, and mostly, his eyes. Part of, in fact most of, what made his act so funny( especially playing Latka on Taxi with Carol Kane as his wife. Their roles were played so seamlessly, that many times you forgot it was an act, and thought of them as a real married couple. IMHO, what made Andy so convincing was his eyes. The best way to describe it is, he was like a male version of an ingenue: unsophisticated, innocent, charmingly unworthy and naive. He had a way of looking at the camera with big brown eyes, and that quiet shy delivery, like what a doe would look like if it was changed into a person. You were rooting for him; even in bits where he didn't seem particularly funny, you'd find yourself feeling so sorry for him; his facial expressions and eyes had a way of making you feel protective of him. That was part of his genius; because Noone really knew who the " real" Andy Kaufman was. So, no matter how well Jim Carrey could imitate the voice, the mannerisms and the body language, the eyes were all wrong; which is why his performance doesn't hold a candle ( again just my opinion) to the brilliance of the real Andy Kaufman. Jim Carrey's eyes are always wrong, and that is why, to me, he didn't quite pull it off. Now, as to whether he was actually channeling Andy Kaufman? No way for me to say, Absolutely Not! I wasn't there. But I highly doubt it. If he was channeling anybody ( and it's a big if) I don't think it was Kaufman because then he could have gotten the eyes right. Anyone who wants to see some of the legendary performances Kaufman was in, should watch Taxi. Especially the episode where their priest tells Andy and his wife ( Latka and Simka) that they must divorce. Nothing in my opinion shows off what wonderful actors these two really were than that episode. After that, you'll see what I mean, and no further explanation will be necessary.

Jim Carrey was the biggest movie star on the planet at the time this movie was filmed. He probably went through several years of people telling him how great he is and everything they thought he wanted to hear, instead of what he needed to hear. Inflated his ego quite a bit, apparently.

One thing I'm unclear about regarding the movie's production is, who invited Andy Kaufman's family to the set? If they came on their own volition, genuinely believing that their son/brother had returned in some capacity, that makes it a little more tolerable in that they were willing to perpetuate the idea of "possession." If Carrey invited them to the set himself, that's just an ego trip. Either way, I agree with this video- Jim Carrey took the role way too far, and it pisses me off that he doesn't take any responsibility for his actions.
