Is sacrifice just offering up something to make someone else's life better? Theology makes it sound more complex. So, what is Sacrifice? How is the Mass a sacrifice?

It’s great to see how straight and strong the arrow shoots when some of us resolve to talk about the Eucharist. I am a lay person, recent convert from Protestantism and I talked about Corpus Christi on the day in a 3 minute video I posted to my Instagram. I had to watch my own video a number of times because I couldn’t even get how it came together. This is one of the best talks of yours I’ve seen. Much love to you, father. God bless.

John 12:23-26 Maybe He wants you to be a nobody (meaning not famous), so that you can spread the Faith more broadly than you wildest ambitions. Gen. 15:3-6 Abraham only had one son by Sarah.... Sacrifice is important because love is not possible without it. Love without sacrifice is like a car without an engine. Its just an empty shell. It is that hollow facsimile of "love", devoid of sacrifice, that is the counterfeit peddled by the secular world.

I recently shared this on another video, but I thought this might also be a relevant video to post it. The beginnings of some reflections I've have been having: I've heard theologians speculate (as they all do) that the cross wasn't necessary - that God could have simply declared us saved. So, on one hand, we can reason the cross as something like man owing a debt to God that he can't pay, but on the other hand, in reality, I see the cross, and by extension quite literally everything else, as being unnecessary, and in that sense, a gift (Jn 15:13). Jesus didn't have to die for us, but He did, because God is love and He laid his life down for us. It was in His nature, so to speak, to do so. In regards to the Church then, I've asked myself, what does this mean for the necessity of the Church? Here as well, it seems to me that the Church isn't necessary, just as Christ's crucifixion wasn't necessary. In fact, nothing He did was necessary, but rather everything was done out of perfect love, as a gift. And as the bride follows after the bridegroom, we too must offer ourselves as a gift. The missionary activity of the Church isn't strictly necessary in the sense that God needs us to save souls, but we are commanded to imitate Christ and nonetheless offer ourselves most purely out of love, as a gift, just as He did. It's not about whether or not any of this is necessary - it's simply about love.

You have inclined me to read Aquinas' _Summa Theologica_ Tertia Pars on these questions of necessity, and I suggest that you do the same. The main thing to keep in mind is the equivocal term 'necessary' - in the absolute sense, nothing in all creation and history is necessary for God; in the relative sense, it is necessary for God's justice and mercy and wisdom and community of His Goodness, given human nature and the fall... that Christ Jesus should suffer and die as God made man and establish His Church. Luke 24:26.

@@john-paulgies4313 Hey thanks for the reply! I often post stuff like this hoping that someone can help me reason things out better and/or impart some knowledge I may be lacking, because I'm just a lay person with no theological training or background. St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa is rather daunting to me haha I think I've read an excerpt here or there, but nothing more. I was going to ask for the reference, but it looks like I've found it online. I'll give it a read and hopefully can understand what he's saying. In response to the relative sense you mentioned above, if I understand you correctly, that's what I was getting at when I said Jesus went through His passion out of love, which is His nature. I'm not sure that it's an important distinction, but I would argue that is something different from necessity. Thanks and God bless.

"You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thy enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you: That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust. For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? do not even the publicans this? And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? do not also the heathens this? Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect." (Matthew 5:43-48) "...[T]he charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost who is given to us. For why did Christ, when as yet we were weak, according to the time, die for the ungodly? For scarce for a just man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some one would dare to die. But God commendeth his charity towards us: because when as yet we were sinners according to the time. Christ died for us. Much more therefore, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son: much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life." (Rom. 5:5-10)

@deborahfaiththompson3639 Well, they left the True faith, and if they return, God willing, it should be to what they left. There's too much syncretism happening now. It's not good.

You do know there were human sacrifices going on back then as well? Jesus took the apostles to the cave where it was happening and gave the speech. On the history channel there was a show that went to that cave and told the history about it. So animal sacrifices as hard as they are for us to understand in this age was what they (Judaism)did then until Jesus. (Christians didn't do animal sacrifice. Fyi.) Animal and human sacrifice is still going on in Luciferian cults and other culty tribal religions. Christianity has been the one Religion to stop it in most places and to slow it down. Unfortunately, the way the world has gone so pagan it has sprung its ugly head up and you can see it by the satanic Hollywood and cern entertainment and the amount of SA and missing and exploited people. Even a democrat Senator in CA stepped down this past week because she can no longer tolerate "the sale of children" while lawmakers look the other way.

Are you claiming that it wasn't written in the bronze age? Don't get all uptight, you guys. I didn't write the book 😹 It's true that other societies have performed blood sacrifices. Christianity, which started as a sect of Judaism, is centered around a blood sacrifice, albeit a pretty extreme one. Wouldn't you find it more impressive if Christianity DIDN'T do the same thing as all the other religions?

NO THIS IS A PAULEAN DISTORTION OF JESUS’ TEACHINGS. Jesus was literally against animal sacrifices and his whole mission in Jerusalem was to abolish animal sacrifice. So therefore seeing his bloody cruel death on the cross as a representation for love for God is sheer insanity. God is all loving and does not want us to suffer to become ‘worthy’ of God’s love. For those interested in Jesus’ true message, I recommend the book ‘A Course in Miraces,’ or KZbinr Aaron Abke and specifically his interview with Andre Duqum.

Did Jesus suffer? Do you want to become like Jesus? Is there value in suffering? What does the Bible say? Romans 5:3-5 (NIV): "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." 2 Corinthians 1:5-7 (NIV): "For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort." 1 Peter 4:13 (NIV): "But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed."
