Scales are the bane to learning any musical instrument, but absolutely essential. Nobody wants to be a one-trick pony that can play songs but never create or improvise! Improv is also my favorite thing about playing an instrument. The most fun you'll ever have from an instrument.

Your explanation of WHY scales are important was really great for someone green to music theory like me, now I see how more pieces of the puzzle fit together 😁

Every point of theory like scales and arpeggios are important because when you start a piece very often you find that you can already play many parts of it because they are just various forms of the scales or chords you have learnt. Composers don't just pick random notes, they usually pick patterns which derive from a certain scale and build on that. An example of that is turkish march which is basically A major plus octaves. If you try to learn without ever practicing octaves or scales then it looks like random notes trilling up and down but an experienced player can sit down and imediatelly play it more or less because they already have the muscle memory. One part literally just goes up and down A minor so there can't be a more clear example. Canon in d is mostly just going up and down d major. Going to rock metal and pop music which is mostly chords, nothing random about it, the more chords you know the easier a piece will be to learn, evanescence songs are quite a challenge and very well written but almost every song has the same AEA Csharp gsharp csharp EBE chords both left hand and right hand. My immortal is mainly the same chords and arpeggios over and over with bits of A major running through. In conclusion theory is awesome!

Hi Allysia, great vid! Just wanted to clarify one thing: the question isn't whether to change the third degree (in Ab major) from C to C#, or the fourth degree from D to Db. The third degree *must* be C, because C# wouldn't fit the pattern. The question is whether to change the fourth degree from D to C# or to Db. The answer is that you change it to Db, because you already have "a C", and you always want exactly one note of each letter in the scale. I may not have said that exactly correctly, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

QUESTION: There are a lot of scales to learn. Which would you consider the top 5ish most important to learn first? Thanks.

My kid's piano teacher used to get him to remember the pattern for major scales by saying: "We Walked Home When We Walked Home." Get it? W-W-H-W-W-W-H. Yeah it doesn't make any sense but somehow I'll never forget it. :)

Hi Allysia, I have a question for you that pertains to scales. I've been a musician for over 30yrs drums are my main instrument and I have been taking private lessons for about 3 months. My current teacher has me doing mainly sight reading and hasn't even mention anything about learning scales which is very strange to me. I'm going to ask her about it next lesson. Do you think that this is strange that I haven't been given lessons on scales yet? Thank you for your time..Geddy

Hey, If i may, i want to share some trick to quickly recognize what scale the song is, just by counting the mols or the sharps at the beginning of the staff line If it is mols say there are 1 mol, you put your finger to C, and then go 2 + 0,5 steps forward and you reach F, so the scale of the song is F major say there are 3 mol, you put your finger to C, and then go 3x(2 + 0,5) steps forward first 2+0,5 steps you reach F, then next you reach B flat, then last 2+0,5 steps you reach E flat. So the song is on E flat major scale If there are N mols, you put your finger to C, and then go Nx(2+0,5) step forward to reach the note represent the major scale of the song you are playing and also you can see that F is the fa of the C mayor scale, Bflat is the fa of the F major scale, and E flat is the fa of the B flat major scale If it is sharps You do it the same like with mols but with 3+0,5 steps forward say there are 2 sharps, you put your finger to C, and then go 2x(3 + 0,5) steps forward , first 3+0,5 steps you reach G, then next 3+0,5 steps you reach D. So the song you are playing is on D mayor scale simply put, for N sharps symbols, the steps are gonna be Nx(3+0,5) and also you can see that G is the sol of the C major scale, D is the sol of the G major scale, and A is the sol of the D major scale hope it helps

Unless the song you are playing has a scale in it, why would you keep focusing on scales to play better for improving technique? Seems like that would make you play scales better
