Why Scorn could have been the Best Game of 2022

I personally didn't mind the gripes a lot of people had with Scorn. I spent about 5 hours in it getting immersed, beholding every little detail, and just trying to cover as much ground as possible before moving on and completing the game. The problems I had with it were; 1 - the occasional backtracking (coupled with the player's slow movement and/or large level design, and dark hard to see environments; would've been nice to have a light of sorts). 2 - the puzzles would sometimes assume you knew a game mechanic but doesn't give context that would lead you to assume that(having to punch the egg babies inside the biomechs near the end or shoot a grenade into open ports), I came close to searching a walkthrough twice but thankfully I went through the whole game without needing it. 3 - the storytelling elements; as you said it's pretty much 100% theorised as nothing solid is provided. 4 - ultimately the length of the game. I was hoping for something around at least 10 hours considering the price of the game, the ending was grimdark but unsatisfactory, I was really rooting for my boy. Otherwise, I actually quite enjoyed the gunplay. Yes it was clunky and slow, but I never died once during my playthrough. I took my time and was cautious, I rationed so much ammunition and was careful with my shots and I found it super rewarding. I do wish there were more enemy varieties but I was pleased with the amount of 'violence' in it (taking out the buff creature's head with the shotgun!). I also agree with you saying you felt like it was a Bioshock game at times, and I wish it was more like it. A lot of things in the game aren't telegraphed well like the puncher gun having its 'charge' meter on the side being hard to see, or whether or not shooting those biomechs in the limbs would do anything, so visual feedback would've been great to see in that case. If I had the same issues as everyone else I'd be very disappointed, having paid 54AUD for it. After completing it I feel like it would've definitely been worth 20AUD at most. But because I love attention to detail in environments, gore, immersive atmospheres I don't feel as.. bitter? about spending that much. I do wish there was more to the game, and I'm really hoping the audience backlash forces them to add more or do something to make it worth the price.

Alpha demo enemies and weapons were much better. Tbh I liked that old color scheme better too. They managed to screw up all of that. Reasons unknown.

The obvious explanation as to why the game isn’t what it could have been was that Covid happened. It very likely slowed production and they probably didn’t have the funding to include all the areas and fps elements that they wanted to. The game was supposed to be a lot bigger too including more areas and enemies. Hopefully if they get proper funding they can make a director’s cut or a part 2 that improves the gameplay and fleshes out the world a bit more.
