Description babble (aka, pleading to the algorithm gods):This video is about self improvement, self development, self help, and why all of that can be a good or a bad thing depending on your outlook. It can either ruin your life, or make it worth living. I'm Joey Schweitzer, this is Better Ideas, and I don't know what else to say... Somebody post a meme to the subreddit because it's dying.

You gotta take action. That's the bottom line. It's a balance, if you're just bumbling about not examining your action, you'll make a lot of avoidable mistakes, but knowledge is useless. Knowledge in action is gold. Thanks for this perspective.

@@niklas5948 I think his point is to not surround your life around self-improvement rather than pursuing and living life. Like he does. Basically, do less consuming and more doing. He is not the same as his viewers. He is doing less consuming and doing more. Aka focusing on his KZbin career, outside work, experiencing life and help advising people. Self help is useless if thats all you surround your improvement by. Find a passion outside self help so you can actually implement it to be beneficial. Yes self help can be useful, however if all your focus is on self-help, it won’t get you to the same place as the people you may look up to. That’s why he brought up successful people. Focus on doing. (Learning about topics you are passionate about, going outside, exploring, learning new hobbies) rather than consuming self help n being isolated

It’s also that if you’re always obsessed with self improvement to the end of time then you’ll never feel grateful about reaching your goals. You’ll simply have disappointment in yourself over not having yet reached a goal even further than the one you originally set. As a middle schooler who couldn’t even do a single push-up, I would’ve dreamed of having “average” chest strength, but now that I have average chest strength I feel just as miserable compared to muscular people. It’s the hedonic treadmill.

Wouldn't get enough clicks. Not attacking him or anything, I'm with him completely here, the title holds and it's not a false title and it delivers what it says. But youtubers also need to make some money. Making the title more attractive to clicking on isn't being a bad human, it's smart advertising, until it becomes false advertising, or as we on youtube call it, clickbait.

I notice that since a months ago, I only prefer to pursue my legitimit goals that I want and that's it!. I have live in a poor family, I only want a better house, better food, better clothes, to certain degree, and stay "stock" in there until I feel the need to improve something else, that's how I feel moving free and with confort in life, if sometimes I need to be more rigid some times on certain things, then I do it, follow your gut, sometimes I complain I let the place to feel like shit some times. In my opinion support the values, ideas, paradigms, that makes you feel better, that makes you feel that you have a normal bearable life, that makes you feel satisfied 80% of the time.

@@avananana No, the title is false , it clearly makes us think the problem is self improvment. I feel I wasted my time because there was nothing new. I already watched another youtuber talking exacly the same thing but with the appropriate title. I clicked curious to see why he is saying self improvement is a problem and if the title was right, I would not had wasted my time. "...need to make some money". It does not justify misleading titles and you talk as if he doesn't make much money. He probably makes more than us all combined in this discussion. But we have this mentality nowadays that to sell something using such tricks is "smart" instead of unethical.

IMO, self improvement means growing as a human both mentally and emotionally. It's about learning to deal with the ups and downs of life and being content with your own life. It's about seeing where you're lacking, finding solutions to it, making those changes, and building good habits. You don't need to be the best at everything. It could be as simple as drinking more water and making it a part of your daily routine. You have to accept the problem, find a solution, and just start. Be persistent and watch the results over time.

This should be the channel front page video, this is the big takeaway for sure. You find yourself in these places because you get knocked down or you're down on your luck, but no amount of sharpening the sword really fixes anything on its own as obvious as that seems like it is. Not being able to gain new skills just by studying up is something I had to learn the hard way in my college years, and it basically applies the same here but with being the version of you you want to be. That intangible confidence and wisdom doesn't just turn on eventually, you just have to actually be gripped by what you actually do in whatever you're after and start powering through being the not-so-desirable version of yourself you are now in the moment, because beyond just realizing the dreams of being better you _do_ still _right now_ really care about and want the stuff you need to do.

I concur with the general sentiment but I think it’s ok if you do what others do as long as it’s still authentic to yourself. Everyone’s just a blank canvas that gets painted on by numerous entities be it your parents friends society whatever. I think its about evaluating what they’ve painted and altering things where u see fit. Like of course most of my opinions have been held by others before me especially if it’s not regarding something personal to me but it’s about making sure the point is evaluated not just blindly believed. Of course my life will be similar to everyone else’s somehow but as long as it’s what I want to do and feel I should do. Of course someone else on Earth will share even my most esoteric passion and that’s ok as long as it’s what I truly want to do

I agree with what you’re saying - to an extent. The whole point of self improvement is so we can apply what we’re learning to our everyday life and if we’re not then it’s a waste of your time and energy. I’ve read countless books and it helped me quit smoking, create better habits, manage my emotions and become a better version of myself and for my partner BUT AGAIN, it’s because I was applying everything I was learning to better my relationships and myself. I think individuals who think self improvement is a waste of time is because they’re not putting it into action. And it’s like losing weight, it’s not an overnight success. Self improvement takes time and effort! It took me about a year to unravel some trauma and face it, which ultimately led me to where I am now. Things take time!!

I would take all this information and share this with my wife with a lot of excitement. Finally one day she came to me and asked me why I was learning all this when I was in applying any of it.I took that to heart and applied everything I learned from then on! I became an action taker!!! It changed my life!

But at the same time I feel like im running out of time if I just focus on what normal kids my age are focusing on which is school but I dont wanna persue school, I wanna work from home and make money wherever I go. Philosophy is everything, people have forgot to thing about what they are doing, you are going to fast, stop yourself, think what you are doing. And have self imporvement, but at the same Time have some time to Entertain yourself. You cant live without that. It´s so funny, Humans want to Escape the Equilibrium, but at the same Time they crave it so they can have Order in their life.

I don't know man, by self-improving I feel my confidence levels rise. reading books and applying what I learned really does help me in a lot of situations. ever since I started staying home more and looking into my future I noticed one thing about my friends. All we used to do is go out hang out smoke a joint or a few drinks and talk about how we will be rich and how we will develop good habits. I started doing my own improvement which really made me realise my friends still do what they did for the past few years. their highlighted story wouldn't be of how they succeeded or what they achieved. it is more like how fucked up they got on whatever and be proud and say how I'm missing out. Their excuse is that gotta live while we are young. I want to be flying on Jet Skis and travelling the world while I'm young not getting fucked up in my dodgy town for the next 5 years. If you hang with 5 millionaires you will be the 6th, If you hang with 5 bums you will be the 6th. to make it short iv become a tank haha. i work full time i train everyday, nobody understands why I'm doing all this but iv to be a millionaire by 25 so..... in this world the only support is me myself and I. Hadhoudtn you’re both right. Action is necessary to make any change in any direction but It’s not only about action, it has to be coupled With actually knowing what direction you want to be in life. It’d be pointless both reading books and putting into practice ideas about socializing if I’m already a very social person. So he’s right, aimless self improvement (including the ideas you put into action, practice and perfect) is kinda pointless if it’s not taking you to where you want to be in life. There’s a famous quote that says, “growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of a cancer cell.” I think it applies. When I was young, I heard that an admirer said to a pianist, “I’d give my life to play like this.” The pianist replied, “I did.” Everyone that runs had to learn to walk. They fell down and their parents didn’t berate them. The parents encouraged the babies...and what do you know? They not only learned to run, most kids learn to ride bicycles & learn to drive. We start at the beginning and practice. If you keep up, you’ll be good at it. Reading does go hand in hand with learning! Sometimes, it saves a bunch of falling down!!!

I agree with you about experience. I was thinking about all the things that I just went out and did in my twenties and what great things came from that action of going in and doing them. I also thought about the growth in my career when I made organic gut choices without wondering about it first.

The biggest problem with people who think they need self improvement is that they feel they have to put everything else on hold until they're satisfied. People even set aside developing relationships or going out to find one, because they don't think they're ready. You can go throughout your entire life trying to improve things but never feel satisfied. It can be pretty heartbreaking to think about all those missed opportunities.

This video actually helped me to go to therapy, I was never satisfied with myself and I thought that if I improve myself or if I reach my goals I would find happiness, but as years passed I only start to feel worst and I stopped finding a reason to do anything. I did not even wanted to get out of bed and I started to sleep more than I should. Now, thanks to my therapist I know my situation is not normal and just because I don't have suicidal thoughts, doesn't mean I'm not depressed. So, in two days I'm going to the psychiatrist, because I probably have dysthymia and this way I'll get the meds I need. Of course im sad, but at the same time I'm happy I'm finally finding the reason of my lack of motivation, because at least for me this is a nonstop fight that everyday was consuming me more. Thanks Joey. And sorry for my English, this is not my native language.

So one of the best self improvement advice I've ever heard is ironically about stop focusing on self improvement, but rather mastering what I like doing. Thanks man.

On the other hand you shouldn't be too extreme about improving yourself either. It is human to make mistakes, to miss out a day of exercising or to eat your favourite chocolate after you have been craving it for a week. Nobody is perfect, and you have to give yourself breaks from self-improving, too. If you feel like it is becoming a task and you are not enjoying what you are doing anymore, then you will likely fail a few days or weeks later anyways. In my opinion it is better to cheat and enjoy it, and then go back to your plan or routine of self-improving. In short: Have fun while improving yourself!

I think we all have to go through these stages of understanding in our own lives. If you’re unaware, and something happens and you get more aware, self help is a good place to start. We get our wisdom from learning and advancing. And then we start to see things more clear, and our perspectives shift. But it takes time, and it’s our own journeys.

Exactly, if you’re not sure of your future plans and goals, self improvement is practically useless. The same thing happened to me, I spent a lot of time focusing on self improvement and I didn’t even know what I was doing it for. Eventually I decided to stop so I could just figure out what I want.

i think thats his point.......people now want to be perfect and focusing on self improvement just because they think that they aren’t good enough to do anything the point is just don’t think you aren’t a good person because someone that doesn’t even know you says that you have to be better i hope this helps

You can go outside, do stuff with people, talk to them but you will be having a worse time while you aren't fixed to some extent. Having a not so good time worth it? If you can, fix some of your major issues (again, if you can) then do the socializing. I think it's pretty obvious.

@Better Ideas and everyone else: This is a long comment but please take your time to read it. Hopefully it will open your eyes to a new aspect of your life. What you discuss here is the problem with the personality culture that has evolved since the beginning of the last century. In western culture, we idolize the individual, and especially individuals who are very open and charismatic. For many people, this new culture suits them, but for just as many it does not. There are people who will always be more happy sitting at home "sharpening their swords" as you describe it, and who will never be at peace with themselves regardless of how good they get at "fighting the monsters outside". This is the problem with the personality culture that has evolved, as it sets an ideal that is only applicable to a percentage of the population. In the past, the character culture was the predominant one, in which traits such as honor, honesty, perserverence and empathy was in focus. Becoming the "best" was not the goal, but instead people were encouraged to become as good a person as each individual had the capacity for. This culture is a better fit for most people, and it does not require any self help. For instance, everyone knows how to be honest or how to show perseverence. In personality culture on the other hand, where traits such as charisma, well-spokenness and risk taking are prevalent, there are inumerable self-help books and media, becuase it is not obvious how to be, for instance, charismatic. For those who struggle with self-help, the best advise is to abandon it completely. Reflect on yourself and your personality, your goals and dreams, who you are, and you will find that you know exactly what makes you feel like you are becoming a better person. Quite possibly, you will find that being more like the "popular guy" is not the answer, but that being a loyal and loving partner, a great parent, a reliable colleague and someone your parents can be proud of, is what brings peace and a feeling of personal improvement to yourself. It will be difficult to cast off the yoke of the personality-idolizing culture that we have been brought up in, but everyone can achieve it.

Here's a thought I'd like to share, a couple of years ago when I first picked up self-help books like "The Happiness Trap" & "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***", I felt very inspired reading them and I was able to effectively remember and apply the techniques and concepts that I read in these books. At the moment, after reading god knows how many "self-help" books, I feel like I got desensitized and I no longer feel inspired. There's a noise of bad (and 'good') advice that I received from these books that I'm overwhelmed by, and affects my decision-making. I can definitely relate to the thought of "I'm like an alien trying to learn how to interact with humans". Reading these socializing books have helped me a bit (like maybe 10%) but have also made me even more inside my own head when I interact with people. I don't remember it being this tedious to interact with people when I was in middle school, and I didn't read 300 social skills books back then. Sometimes we adult too hard, we over-engineer simple things, when we're supposed to take a step back and realize life isn't meant to be this complicated.

"There is no use continually brooding over who you really are. For, just as in narcissistic self-observation the preoccupation with the effect nullifies the effect, the self of the self-explorer is reduced as his need to explore increases. Excessive psychoanalysis weakens the psyche. A person does not find his self by turning his inner life upside down, he creates it by putting something on his feet in this world. A self that only sees itself ends up destroying itself"
