6 ай бұрын

Gilbert Arenas and Kenyon Martin discuss why it was so hard to shoot free throws for Shaq. He would be more dangerous than a 6'6" Allen Iverson if he could shoot the ball and make free throws. Kenyon demonstrates how Shaquille O'Neal was too big to hold the ball.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

I think the issue with a 6'6" Iverson is that he'd lose some of the advantages he had by being smaller. Likely wouldn't be as shifty and quick due to the longer limbs. There would be tradeoffs for him getting bigger. We're just adding to Shaq's game by saying he can shoot. Nothing gets taken away if he can shoot the ball.

I used to think it was because his hands are too big. Shooting with a really small ball can be difficult. But then I heard him say he had a few different (shooting) coaches try to teach him to shoot and each time he would just give up on the form after a while. Also as I got older and became a better shooter I realized it’s really mostly about form/technique and practice. Whether it be the tiny goal on the back of a door or regulation goal, I got good chances with proper form. If the man gaf about learning how to shoot, he would’ve been able to do it. Small ball, big hands, this and that all excuses, with some relevance yes, but could be overcame. The thing I always thought was weird is he could shoot a half ass decent looking jumper from free throw range 😂 especially in his younger days. And yes, he should’ve backed off the line a little.

K-Mart brought up a great point.... Never thought about Shaq's strength affecting his ft shooting, and that he should have stood back from the line a lil

No I agree I used to shoot better the farther away because traveling thru different parks n queens n bk, most runs aren’t 10 ft. So Shaq probably would shoot better from far like in front of college 3, I think as long as your behind the line it doesn’t matter

I still say that his problem wasn't his hand size. Of course any other person would have problems shooting a tennis ball. But not because of the size of the ball. Because of switching from a basketball to a tennis ball. The ball is really small to Shaq, but it's always been like that. His problems was his eyes and he had trouble with depth perception. Everybody knows that camera angle on the base line that they would switch to after Shaq missed his first free throw. And everybody say how his left eye didn't quite point in the same direction as his right eye. He had what a lot of people have and that is a weakness in one of the muscles in his eye. And for fine motor movements and control, which your muscles in your eyes are all about, is a difficult thing to do immediately after you've been doing something physically exerting. Run full speed, lift weights, do anything that requires explosive muscle movement, and then try to right something. Or play the piano. Use a tiny screwdriver to put in the tiny screws in eye glasses. People with a weakness in their eye muscle, when they stop doing exercise or something physically exerting, that's when the shifting gets most pronounced. So when Shaq has to stop and stare at the rim, he had trouble getting a feel for distance. Depth perception was his problem. Not hand size.

I mean this isn't saying much. If we are assuming AI doesn't lose any of his attributes/skill like speed, agility, stamina handling, etc then yeah he'd be better. So would any player with 6+ extra inches of height. Imagine a 7" Jordan or 7'4" LeBron with all the same skill and attributes... And same with any great player getting Steph's shot. They are instantly significantly better. Jordan or LeBron with Steph shot are still easily the top guys ever. Imagine Wilt with Steph shot? Or Magic? Or Kareem?

Its deeper than that too. If Shaq shot 75% from free throw, teams don't hack a shaq. If teams don't hack a shaq, he probably plays in better shape because he's said the reason he put weight on once he got to LA was to deal with the fouls better. If Shaq is somewhere between Orlando shape and Miami shape then Kobe doesn't hold work ethic against him and they probably co-exist a longer too!

I disagree that his hands were too big or he was too strong. Being too strong would imply that he couldn't control himself and would overshoot the ball in different situations. I've seen him hit closer shots with a lot of finesse on numerous occasions which debunks the too strong claim. Hand size wise, there were players comparatively as big as his such as Boban (whose hands are bigger), Chris Webber (comparative) and Otis Thorpe (comparative).

Without question a Shaq than could shoot. A 6'6" Iverson is not going to have the same low center of gravity, quickness of foot, and slighter build to move horizontally. A Shaq that could hit 3 out of 4 free-throws and was a legitimate threat shooting outside the paint? Unstoppable at that point.

Man I said that he need to move closer to the top of the key because he was to strong all the time when his free throws became the topic. I even had a guy try to tell me a player couldn’t shoot from that spot! I had to explain to him that a player can shoot from any spot within the arc!😂

Ton of great 7 ft shooters in the league. Ball vs hand size doesn’t matter. Heck Shaq’s hand isn’t much bigger than MJ’s. It’s thicker, but not much bigger. He just didn’t practice shooting.

I mean a big part of the speed, agility and stamina and even his handles was that he was only like 5'11"- 6'0" at like 165 lbs. If you make him 6'6" at like 200+ lbs that makes him slower, less agile, less stamina and a less tight handle because of the distance the ball has to travel between dribbles. If we make it so all of that would've been the same regardless then yeah obviously he'd be even better. But that's not saying much. Any player would be better. Imagine Jordan with +6" of height on his frame but with all the same speed, agility, handle, stamina? Or LeBron at like 7'4" but same skill/attributes?
