Watching Double Trouble tear Catra down was double-sided even on that front for me. It was sad for Catra, but at the same time it's *what she really needed.* She's evaded over and over the thought that any of this could be *her* fault. No, it's always Adora, or Shadow Weaver, or anyone but her. "You made your choice. *NOW LIVE WITH IT!* " Her entire redemption arc hinges on that message having finally made it through.

So basically, Double Trouble's character is "be gay do crimes"? Also, I think the moment with them and Catra was more of a wake up call for Catra. True, she doesn't deserve how Shadow Weaver treated her, but she is responsible for pushing people like Scorpia away, or Adora when she kept asking Catra to come join her and then blaming them for abandoning her because she can't deal with her own issues. Double Trouble is a perfect character for the others development because they have no emotional baggage like the others do and can view the situation their in objectively and give it to them straight (or not so straight, cause, y'know). I can't wait for the next season!

I definitely appreciate how Shadow Weaver wasn't "redeemed." Much like Adora leaving the Fright Zone, she's still ultimately the same person. And you make a great point in how it emphasizes how Adora was able to move past Shadow Weaver's past abuse and tolerate her while Catra could not and obsessed over her long after they were gone from her life. Scorpia: Forget the Fright Zone! Forget Hordak! We could, you know, _be happy._ *But she won't.*
@elsafowl
@elsafowl 4 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe Catra can't really forget or forgive or get over it... which is logical, knowing she was the most abused of the Horde kids. That's basically her whole character: she stays in the Horde and becomes this evil Horde commander because she can't just move on from her past, or her trauma. And she still didn't get help or therapy to move on either, it's quite the contrary (with Scorpia accepting Catra's toxic behavior like it's normal and Double-Trouble betraying her). And I don't think Adora quite healed from her abused childhood with Shadoweaver either. She may lives in the same place as her former mother figure, but she is not happy about it, it created a rupture between her and Glimmer and I don't think it's doing wonders for Adora's mental health.

I think that Shadow Weaver doesn’t have good intentions. She’s definitely a complex character, but she manipulated both Catra and Adora to get to Brightmoon, and the scene where Micah gets back from Beast Island she is sitting on the throne. She’s power hungry, and the show is good at showing it. I don’t feel like she has good intentions based on that. I really agree with every other part of this video, though!

I know Hordak is a villain, but god he and Entrapta are just so adorable together! I mean, when he tells her she's not a failure, it's dorky and cute. I try to rationalize their relationship with two things. 1) Hordak was pretty much created to be a conqueror, he has literally known nothing else and is in some ways affected by his creator's neglect. Entrapta has given him a few positive/good moments in his life. 2) In order for Hordak to have happiness while at the same time paying for his war crimes, it'd be best for his punishment to be exile/banishment to some far off place, and Entrapta decides to join him so they won't be alone/abandoned again. They can live together in exile and be awesome lab partners.
@gianellanajera6586
@gianellanajera6586 4 жыл бұрын
Exile in Dryly sounds amazing, maybe even they say to "punish him" he'd have to become a leading scientist in experiments for Brightmoon. All that matters is that Hordak and Entrapta are happy, together, and safe. I'd say Hordak is more of a parallel to Catra than a real villain, because as you pointed out he didn't know better. All he wanted to do was please Prime, to get the "love" Prime use to give him.

I would like to point out that Double Trouble's "your problems are your fault" to Catra would come across as no pushing Adora away isn't her fault if it came before S3 finale. By S3 Catra is entirely responsible for pushing Adora away from herself, she had three major points where she could have left the horde and done the right thing for herself, and just as many to mitigate her own actions. But her insecurities and tendency to blame others for her failings led to her attempting to destroy the world largely out of spite. By the end of Season 3 Catra is responsible for pushing Adora away, that's the whole point of Adora's big moment in the S3 finale.

@@margielewallen3529 It's not even that - Adora's decision to leave the Horde is all about the Horde, and nothing to do with any of the individuals. The same goes for her reasons for staying away. Took the words right out of my mouth! I love Shadow Weaver as a villain, because they are manipulative and cunning. They don't need to possess a large amount of physical prowess to be dangerous, as she can whisper in your ear, telling sweet lies, and lead you down the path she wants. Time will tell how much her influence on Glimmer will take effect, but needless to say, she isn't one so easily beaten!

I like this, it's a big point that needs to be stated, Shadoweaver isn't defeated, and Hordak is closer to a redemption arc than she is. S4 is showing that even without her power, she is dangerous, probably more dangerous, because she hasn't changed. She's still gaslighting, playing friends off each other and manipulating herself into the right hand of power.

I enjoyed the "Why you suck" speech delivered by Double Trouble greatly, it was on point and it worked. It is my greatest grievance with toxic people that you cannot just *tell them* to their faces all the ways in which they've fucked up their own and other's lives. I mean, you sure can, but they will just create more excuses for themselves. Catra actually developed from her Never My Fault phase and became the best version of herself. 9:12 I'd like to point out that DT themselves say "It's for your own good darling" while pointing out the obvious to Catra. I'd like to think DT has a wide enough view of the big picture to realize how someone's actions impacts the world at large. We see this later on when they impersonate that far-seer prince and they explain how living under Horde Prime™'s rule was a life so utterly devoid of enjoyment and artistic fulfillment for them, they went out of their way to try and get the Alliance's attention in order to relay very crucial information. At their heart, DT is just as obsessed with their artistic fulfillment as an actor as Entrapta is passionate about tech. Both are lacking a moral compass, without being full-on Sociopaths (as demonstrated by their, albeit limited, capacity to develop attachments to other people) The difference is DT is always looking at the bigger picture, as opposed to Entrapta's laser-focus.

This makes me wonder how She-Ra will handle the "bigger bad" Horde Prime. Just looking at his character design I spot some glaring things that could come up later: -all the Horde clones except him have two eyes. He has...3 on one side? That's....abnormal. Almost a *mutation.* A design flaw. -Not only that, but he also has mechanical augments, just like Hordak does. They're in his hair. Horde Prime has a god complex, but shows cracks along the edges. Where did *he* come from?

Adora NOT being the usual "Super Special ~*Pure Heart*~" defector-from-evil protagonist is SO GODDAMN REFRESHING. And fascinating, realistic, relatable, deep, and makes for better storytelling. That she doesn't do a quick and easy total 180 away from the former comrades who she *literally grew up with* (looking at you, Star Wars). Both real life and psychological research have proven we are just about all capable of doing very bad things if caught in the wrong combination of situations. You might not even realize it until much later. And meanwhile very few people are always totally evil all the time.

While I certainly agree it was eye opening moment for her, I'm not so sure about the rest. Over the course of the series Catra has had multiple chances at redemption, or at least opportunities to walk away from the conflict (to choose her own path independent of either Adora or the Horde), but at every turn she's embraced the dark side instead. It's not so much that I think Catra is irredeemable, but rather more so that I think Catra herself believes it... that throwing her lot in with the Horde has become a sunk cost for her. She might now understand her mistakes, but I'm not so sure if she can allow herself to believe in any other path, because doing so would require admitting that everything she "sacrificed" in the process was all for NOTHING.

We did get to see Shadow Weaver's back story. The fact that she used to be part of the Rebellion but was snubbed, rightfully so because she was willing to take gigantic risks. She was a mentor to Micah. She let the evil consume her, then she became the abusive narcissistic mother to Adora and Catra. The way she shows respect to Glimmer is fascinating. She becomes this voice of reason.

I love how they showed Catra learning to open up to people in S5. When she was talking to Glimmer while in Horde Prime’s ship, it felt like she was starting to let other people in to her heart. I also liked how it took a while for Catra to actually be nice and truly a good friend instead of changing her personality in one episode.

Great video, and some really good points were made. Although, I have to disagree with your take on that scene with Catra and Double Trouble. I really don't see it as a step back for Catra's redemption, because she was at a point where she just needed to hear all of this. It certainly didn't ease her pain, but the route she was taking during the whole show (especially in season 4) was way more painful to her. She was already breaking down and believing too hard in the things she kept telling herself, she just needed to be called out. Because everything DT said was true. I think it may resonate with Catra, probably traumatizing her, but also giving her a new perspective on her situation, and I found that hopeful. So, like you said, I definitely didn't know how to feel about that scene, but not for the reasons you explained. It was just really painful to watch Catra get hurt so deeply once again, but it also felt right and necessary. Anyway, these were just my thoughts.. Loved the vid!

I kind of felt like no matter how "good" Shadow Weaver became/acted, she was always manipulating the people around her. I felt like she spent ALL of season 4 manipulating Glimmer. That isn't to say that what Glimmer did wasn't her fault, but Glimmer was hurting after losing her mom and Shadow Weaver (and a little bit Double Trouble) just exacerbated that by egging her in what was constantly the wrong direction. Plus then....season 5 I just wanted to smack Shadow Weaver every time she was on screen. Lol

While I disagree that Shadow Weaver has true intent to change right now (I bet she will in S5 now that Micah's back uwu) I think you were spot-on with the thesis of her story. It's easy to love Catra and Hordak because they're abuse victims, but what about Shadow Weaver, who's deeply complicated and whose own actions have hurt her so desperately? What about her, who has a loved one? I feel the thesis of her story is about how you should love everyone and see the human in them even when it's hard.

I don't want to sound like I'm leaving a hate comment because I'm not, I watched one of your other She-Ra videos and immensely enjoyed it! Thank you for that, but I would argue that Double Trouble betraying Catra was the beginning to her redemption. I definitely felt bad for Catra in that scene but what Double Trouble did was say "Hey, stop blaming everyone else for your accidents." (to sum it up) which I think started her growth in Season 5, because of that Catra looking at Adora and her past and how they always interacted showed her, "Adora wasn't using me, she genuinly loved and cared about me." Which prior to that scene of Double Trouble was taken as "She wants me to think she's my friends so then she would have power over me." So i think that whole thing with Double Trouble was really good and important for her to realize the way she acts is far from ok. I still love the rest of the video this is not hate I wanted to share my opinion/what I believed happened in that scene :)

I wish you made this after watching season 5 too because I think Shadow Weaver’s death and what she says to Catra is really significant too. It’s like the perfect ending to that saga I LOVED how they did it. It gave much needed closure. The one thing Shadow Weaver spent years trying to stop and break apart, only to be the one to make it possible to happen by undoing it. It’s just…I’ve never been so happy at a scene the way I was for that.

When Double Trouble betrayed Catra, personally, it wasn't a moment of "I feel bad for Catra" but rather, it was a moment of "Finally, it's about time Catra heard what needed to be said. You can't fix a problem if no one brings attention to it". I believe that if it weren't for Double Trouble's aggressive therapy speedrun plus the complete annihilation of Hordak's Horde, Catra would have never been redeemed.

Easy answer, Noelle like villains and nemesis/lovers relationships. See Nimona for details. Also, the morality of She Ra reminds me most of Gundam Seed. With both sides being not really good and having both Kira and Athrun being sorta protagonists. They were even friends before the war put them on opposite sides. And they are probably the most popular ship or their respective shows.

I am someone who has always supported the villains side of the story, depending on the type of Villain and/or need of slight alteration, because I understand the most important fact of all stories. "Everyone is complicated". This show has taken this fact and has elaborated it so perfectly. There are some aspects I do agree with you about the characters Analysis. But I do agree with you completely on the importance that no one is a clear cut character. Making Horde Prime the the clear cut bad guy immensely helped in comparing the characters differences from being just clear cut 2D-Characters of good and bad. Also I rate the Villains more likeable than then the Heroes.

Great video and I agree with most of what you said EXCEPT for your thoughts on Double Trouble's final scene with Catra. I took it to mean that while it was a sudden and devastating slap in the face to Catra's burgeoning relationship with DT, it was a slap in the face that Catra needed. When Catra asks why DT was doing it, they responded with "it's for your own good". Which is a sentiment I reflect. Catra has been so single-mindedly focused on taking down She-Ra and the Rebellion that she has never properly reflected on why she felt so upset that Adora left. Before 'Promises' she admitted it's because she didn't have a best friend but after 'Promises' she came to the wrong conclusion and assumed that Adora had been maliciously holding her back all along which is contrary to fact. This completely lends itself to Catra closing up and refusing to become friends with anyone and push everyone away (e.g. Scorpia), especially when she tells DT that she's "had enough of best friends". But despite her pushing people away, she still craves support and affection which is why she breaks down when Scorpia leaves. What DT's monologue does is force Catra to re-examine why everyone around her has left or given up on her and it's the path to making Catra realise her toxic behaviour is at a detriment to what she truly wants (friendship). While the monolgue may have quite possibly (it's still up in the air for me) completely burned any bridges between Catra and DT, it has opened the way for her redemption and subsequent rekindling of friendship with Adora and Scorpia as a good friend.
