Congrats sister on your reversion to Islam!! I’m also a revert for many years. I get asked “Aren’t you hot wearing all of that?” I laugh & say “Hellfire is hotter!” That usually breaks the ice & I explain that it is for the purpose of modesty & I explain that in the desert the nomads do not wear bikinis, tank tops & shorts. They cover themselves from head to toe to protect themselves from the burning rays of the sun. Also, I explain how covering your body creates a cooling system. How perspiration and air flow around you actually cools your body. I then explain that in Allah’s (God’s*) infinite wisdom, he commands us to cover for our protection, not his!Protection from leering & jealous eyes. To be looked at & treated as a person with a brain, not as a sexual object or an ornament for men to admire, fantasize about & lust after. But to be respected, revered, & treated equally based upon our abilities & not for our looks. When people understand “why” we cover they stop being afraid of it! They start to respect it & the fear of the unknown is overcome. We start to build bridges when we connect to others who did not initially understand that it should be a woman’s right to cover her body if “she” so chooses. A woman should not be forced or pressured to show her body or dress scantily in order to be considered valuable in our society. That is the true devaluation of women!! Hope this helps anyone who reads it, insh’Allah!!* (God Willing!!*) Muslim woman are usually the face of Islam because our hijab is readily identifiable to the public. Let’s be neat & clean & presentable when going out. Be pleasant towards others & smile because we never know who will take an opinion about Islam based on how we looked or what we did that day without us even knowing it!
