Thank you for that explanation. I had no idea what D-log was used for, because every time I selected it looked like crap. So never used it, now I know better and will use it more often.

Hello Drone Community, I have a certain question about filmed Material in D-Log. I’m a noob in the drone game and wanted to get in touch with post color grading…so I ended up using D-Log and my laptop can’t really display it without stuttering. I use Premiere Pro for the moment but don’t know how to display the data in a format to reduce the stuttering image. Sorry for my English, it’s not my main language, obviously. Is there a quick possibility to convert the material in another format or is the reason that my laptop is too weak to display it properly? Beste regards A Noob in Need 😅

Have been a stills guy for sometime, video gave me anxiety. This is a great video for the neophyte videographer. The application of Luts has also finally come full circle in my understanding. I will definitely start recording in Dlog on my P4. I'm also using Davinci, so your upload was even that more helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

Best comparison would be on a cloudy day. The default colors will have a burnt out sky, while the flat profile will have some information, that you can use and grade in sort off HDR style.

I wonder why a lot of people recommend for dji phatnom 3 d-log settings sharpness-2, contrast -3, saturation-2 and not everything to -3 ? Also there's topic that it's better to use NONE instead of D-Log but can;t find out what color saturation and sharpness settings to use with it.

Log settings are great if you have the processing power to lift the footage back but most standard lap tops dont have that ability and cause major problems in post.

Do you find that with the phantom you have to really nail exposure? I took some underexposed shots and found that to get my highlights right that either the blacks were gonna be crushed or look lifted.

Obviously you are a working Pro. However, I am trying to get to the best solution for GOP artifacts in P3 footage. In this video, the Author , Chris Bottrell, claims that shooting D-log may render detail "Uncorrectable" in post. This is a limitation of the log format in 8 bit. color space. He says it can turn areas into "Mush". I'd love your comments as to the best practices with this wonderful tool that unfortunately is limited by being 8 bit and low data rate. I've only had my drone a week and all I do is test. Have you noticed "Mush" in your footage? Thanks for your work.

Really helpful and interesting video. Thank you for taking the time. Curious what editing software you use? You answered one really important point that I found particularly helpful...the color grading. I never wanted to take the time so I never film in Dlog, but to simply use a LUX makes it much more manageable. Thx again!

ND Filters allow you to reduce your shutter speed while not over exposing your shot. I'm sure you've figured that out by now.

What if i shoot dlog in -3 sharpness, -3 contrast and 0 saturation. Does reducing saturation help us in any way? While shootin with saturation -3 you can barely see on the screen what you're shooting.. Is reducing saturation crucial to maintaining information for further grade?

It seems to me that shooting in D-Log has better color, but for some reason has less detail. Almost like it's shooting in a lower resolution.

Yep, try in Art mode, Phillip Bloom used it in one of his Mavic video, and on a Ph3 Pro I found that it work better than D-Log, with some below zero numbers in style :)

Brian Robbins I should imagine the codec is pretty weak and falls apart when you’ll grade, especially if it isn’t true log
@swaygfx7 жыл бұрын
Definitely this is true, the best profile to shoot with is the art profile , D log is muddy and horrible! also , if you bring up the histogram with the Dlog Profile , you'll notice it doesn't give an accurate reading for highlights! go see !
@clifftotten76096 жыл бұрын
The way D-Log SHOULD have been implemented was similar to the way Sony does SLog-2. It should have taken the entire sensor's range and mapped it to 0-255 for 8bit. There should not have been any extra unused headroom like this. Instead, DJI dumped a 7 or 8 stop sensor (or 10 with the P4p) and dumped it into a 15 or 16 stop curve. (like Cineon) This is such a waste and puts WAY too much stress on this 8bit CODEC when normalizing it to rec709 contrast. It's pretty ridicules, really.

dlog is way to flat for an 8 bit image only works well with 12 or 14 bit frames
@samgraves91656 жыл бұрын
This is terrible. The default stuff for DJI is insanely dark. It almost makes it look like nighttime. :(
@GaryWRose7 жыл бұрын
D-Log is way to flat, we need a full spectrum "High Dynamic Range" setting to use the full spectrum of the censor not just the middle of the curve. Sure U can expand to the edges but this only works well in RAW formats. Your histogram during exposure should spread all the way to the right with no climbing the right side, the middle is mostly contrast or mid tones. Video exposure is no different than shooting stills - always expose to the right...
@drewmorg.7 жыл бұрын
Have you found a picture profile mode which works best on the drones which helps do what you describe? Not super stoked on my -3/-3/-3 Cinelike D footage from Mavic at the moment. Too washed out and flat even with my (admittedly novice) color grading.
