Why Should We STILL Buy Physical Games!?

Nothing will ever beat physical media. No stuff being pushed around between 12 million of different subscription services as it is the case with Netflix, Disney + and the like, no sudden removal of all you have bought like Sony did recently, no unwanted Patching you cannot avoid, no requirement of an internet connection, if a digital shop goes defunct you are unaffected, it needs less HDD space if you install from a CD / DVD / BluRay since most of the data can stay and be conviently and efficently streamed from the physical media... ...shall I go on?

It's a shame that it's not as simple as you make it appear, especially with newer games. Many physical copies nowadays only include small fractions and/or unfinished versions of the games, rendering those discs basically as useless as a download. (An impressive example I recall from recent memory is the Spyro Reignited Trilogy only having the first level of the first game on the disc.) Good to see some (smaller) companies trying to forgo this, but it's still a problem.

That’s true, many modern games require a pretty large download even if you own the cartridge. It at least does work that simply for older games that weren’t online. Hopefully companies do make sure their games run just off of disc or cartridge install, but you raise a good point! Thanks for watching and commenting!

The games that do that seem to be the exception though. On ps5 the only single player games I know that do that are hogwarts legacy, Jedi survivor and Avatar (all licensed games which can’t be a coincidence). I know switch has a lot of multiplats that do it, but thankfully all the 1st and 3rd party exclusives are always on the cart. Xbox is just a giant mess with every cross gen game only including the xbone disc that also works as a download key for the XSX version which is going to be a major problem in the future. Also Spyro now has the entire trilogy on disc since the 2nd printing, at least on ps4.

@@bretton_woods couldn’t disagree more. We’re only 3 years in this gen and it’s been incredible so far. Alan wake 2, Ratchet and clank rift apart, FF XVI, psychonauts 2, plague tale requiem, returnal, guardians of the galaxy, ghostrunner 2, the Spider-Man games, hogwarts legacy, Jedi survivor, stray, sifu, lost judgment, ghostwire Tokyo, deathloop, kena, resident evil village, horizon FW, god of war ragnarok, trepang2, Baulders gate 3, etc etc etc. I could really go on and none of the games I listed were remake/remasters, and I’ll remind you we’re only 3 years in. We even got a good Robocop game this gen. Crazy.

@BooBanana we’ve definitely had some bangers in the past few years as long as you don’t go out and pre-order things like Redfall and Gollum, etc. I have to agree tho, some of my all-time favorites like Elden Ring are within the past 2 years.

I have always loved physical games. It can be frustrating though, when the games you're looking for are limited print and popular, making them hard to acquire unless you pay super inflated prices, which I don't wish to do. In those cases, I'll buy a digital copy and be happy enough with it. :) Happy and surprised to see someone mention Breakthru, I loved that game as a kid.

There are definitely some games that have gotten out of hand price wise, but it is definitely a great feeling to come across a game you’ve been looking for at a good price in good condition! We were always looking for 2 player games to play together and I think Breakthru is, so that may have been part of the reason we wanted to play it.

Nice story and cool collection. At this time, I'm at 85% physical collecting for exactly the reasons you stated. For the other 15%, I end up loading retro and modern SHMUPS onto my Switch and taking them on the go. A lot of the SHMUPS I enjoy playing are just a little too pricey to buy a physical copy for the amount of content the game consists of.

There are definitely some games where the physical is prohibitively expensive (or hard to find). I think you’re 85/15 is pretty close to me, I might be slightly more than 15% digital but it’s hard to say thanks to PS+ and Game Pass. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I feel that only when you have a physical copy of the game media on hand that you "own the game". Having them in digital format on some hdd just feels different, almost like you are just renting the game but with no return date.

Yeah, there are many that feel you’re legally correct as well, at least in the U.S. digital is a ”license” to use the game and doesn’t constitute ownership. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I hope that I will not get much hate for what I’m going to say, but after my country ended up under international sanctions I started to appreciate my small physical game collection even more, as since then I’m unable even to upgrade any of my digital games to the PS5 version, nor can I buy DLCs for them unless I have a disc version of a game and use a foreign account. Physical media in this regard is so much more secure.

I think the problem with digital content is DRM. I understand why it exists, but it's not consumer friendly in any way. We should have legitimate ways to copy or at least move our owned digital media between data storages in a way that guarantees they will work in the future. And the protection key must be ours and not property of the media platform. Regarding the physical versions, I miss the old days with beautiful art works and booklets 😢

100% agree! There’s no worse feeling than having digital games on your Switch and then not being able to play them because the WiFi can’t confirm your game isn’t in use. Also, bring back the manuals!

Recently I reduced the amount of digital games I purchase significantly for different reasons. I bought the Xbox Series X wanting to really like that thing, bought game pass and everything. Then Starfield came out, 1 week later for Game Pass subscribers, earlier if you paid 100$/€. That felt pretty scummy especially considering that Starfield is such a shallow game. Pretty frustrated I cancelled game pass and noticed that the Xbox Series X interface changed and it's showing me advertisements for that stupid game pass I just got rid of. So I sold the Xbox and got myself a PS5. One week later Sony announced that they would delete hundreds of shows people BOUGHT digitally from their Playstations because of a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Took less than a week for me to regret my decision to buy a PS5. So now I'm mostly buying physhically because I intend to sell the games when I'm done with them. It does not feel like buying nowadays means owning anything because there are still lots of examples where you can buy a physical copy of a game and still won't be able to play the game if the servers go offline. One example would be the shit show that is THPS 5 but also Skyrim for the Switch won't boot up without an update the first time you insert it. There are loads more but I think I've been rambling enough when I only wanted to leave a comment because I liked your video. Have a great day!

How's the input lag on the retron 5 and have you run into any issues with it? I keep thinking about getting one but I'm not entirely sold.

I honestly haven’t noticed any input lag with it. I’m thinking about making a video about it and my experiences with it. I was able to buy mine used of Facebook Marketplace and it’s worked really well so far.
