Understanding NOMOS Watches & Bauhaus Design

A brief discussion surrounding the Bauhaus, the origins of Industrial Design and NOMOS Watches. It goes into talking about what Bauhaus design language is about and ultimately concludes with a few ideas on how NOMOS could improve their standing amongst the other industry giants. Here's a second topic for a future video. As a Designer who loves Art Deco, I've had a passion for rectangular watches my whole life. This was most likely due to my dad's favorite watch, a gold rectangular Longines given to him by my Mother in 1954. For years I owned an inexpensive but classically designed Seiko gold rectangular watch. When this was stolen several years ago I vowed to replace it with something better. I currently have a JLC Reverso, and an Oris Rectangular Complication, plus the two dress watches on my wish list are a Cartier Santos-Dumont (the first men's wristwatch, pilot's watch and arguably sports watch), and my ultimate grail dress watch, a Patek Philippe Gondolo, in white gold, with a rose colored face, small seconds, Arabic numerals and brown Crocodile strap. Also the classic Cartier Tank is a favorite of mine, plus any number of vintage rectangular watches from the 30's like the Hamilton Putnam, etc... So, a video on the myriad of classic rectangular watches would please the designer in me, and be a great design exercise.

Holy cow, I'd hire you! I think you summarized something important. The brand is looking for under the radar business art. But what you are proposing is an artistic statement. The numerology in your design, 5 blue circles, 4 red squares, 3 yellow triangles with the largest on top, serves to tie parts of the day together and make ingenious associations between them. It reminds me of a recent synthesizer from the German company jomox, a beautifully adorned piece which emulated neural feedback. Neuronium was the name I think. Hugely expensive and only a handful made. I wish I had more money, and more time.

Hi, I just discovered your channel and it's awesome. I too am a trained Industrial Designer (Purdue Univ. '78) from a family of Designers and Architects, two brothers and a sister, Industrial and Graphic Designers, Father a licensed Landscape Architect. I love your design perspective on watches. I However I went a different path with my career and have been a professional pilot for 40+ years and of course a watch enthusiast and collector. I collect and wear pilots and tool watches. My first professional tool watch was my Rolex GMT Master purchased new by me in '83, which I still own and wear today. Topics for discussion... First as a designer with a critical eye there are often watches that I would like to change. You do so with your ID skills and a computer, but it's just fun wishful design unless produced. Case in point, my everyday beater watch is a modded Seiko SKX007. I loved the basic design of this classic, especially the case, dial and hands but didn't like the bezel, insert (I no longer dive) the mineral crystal nor the cheap bracelet. Enter the huge Seiko watch modding community. I need an inexpensive travel international watch, so I redesigned it... switched the bezel to a Rolex Deep Sea style, 12 hour brushed SS, dual time bezel insert, Sapphire crystal and brushed SS chapter ring for continuity. Gone is the rubber strap replaced by no less than a dozen NATO/Zulu straps for any occasion. A designers dream! I now have a waterproof tough classic dual time zone watch that I can take to the beach, pool etc, in Miami, London, Hong Kong or Sydney, my normal work destinations, plus it gets consistent compliments. So a video on the watch mod community, and how YOU would modify the current modifiable watches like I did. Regarding Bauhaus frontrunners, do you consider Vienna Secession artists such as Otto Wagner to be influences? BTW, if not for Dieter Rams, I would argue there would be no Jony Ive as we know his work today.

You are a learned man indeed! The Vienna Secession was absolutely a frontrunner (and the Dutch De Stijl movement just fascinates me as it happened around the same time as Bauhaus) Its a fascinating part of our history. I have been thinking about mentioning these periods in more detail with some videos just to help build the movements around the products of the time. Want to know the irony about Rams and Ive? I decided to study Industrial Design after watching Ive being knighted...so it really is generational. I know that my generation aims to mimic Ive, but I always base most of my initial work on Rams. His choice of materials, colours etc. were so vibrant. He is the OG and his work excites me much more. Oh, and yes, the proof of copycatting is so clear in Ive's work (he often credits Rams too and it's clear that he was his biggest inspiration) Thanks for the great comments as always, man!

IDGuy If I am understanding you correctly, is your argument that Nomos has captured the industrial design traits of Bauhaus, but not the artistic spirit of the school in being avant garde and trend setting, rather than being more mainstream? Nomos to me seems to be arriving within this current trend of Bauhaus nostalgia, while also incorporating cornerstones of legitimized watchmakers (unlike say, Daniel Wellington). My concern is they may not stay afloat if this Bauhaus nostalgia trend fades away, and they do not introduce something radically new to the table, which is capable of being self sustaining should people no longer show interest in Bauhaus retro. By the way, the Bauhaus melding of academia and industry seems similar to Stanford University’s electrical engineering department, and its relationship with transistor, radio and vacuum tube manufacturing firms based out of San Francisco. Fascinating story of how you were inspired to become an industrial designer. I love Ive’s designs, and IMO it was right of him to give credit to Rams. To me, Ive’s opus magna of iPhone designs is the 4. No iPhone touches the iPhone 4’s beauty, and I don’t think any will in the future. That being said, I’m not a fan of Jony’s leadership in iOS design. I think iOS has never run as it should, even since Scott was sacked.

I have been following NOMOS for perhaps the best part of a decade. Not actually buying one, primarily because there is not good access to try on in person where I live. I'm here today watching more information on them because the other day I saw the Ahoi in the Siren Bleu, in person. I will say this without reservation. One of the greatest watch dials I have seen. Without consideration to price. Simply outstanding. I am not sure it's versatile enough for me to own at that price point given my age, but in all honesty - it might be worth the 6 month wait @ nomos just to get it. It is THAT good IMHO.

Excellent. I love the way you evaluate the risks and opportunities. Just as there are great examples of Bauhaus descended designs, we know of the bad ones, like many office buildings that become sterile. Even brutalist can be beautiful and compelling, or it can be just ... brutal. I like the way Nomos is playing with color. I still wrestle with cost, but that applies to the watch industry in general.

It should be noted that NOMOS give the "Deutscher Werkbund" as their inspiration which existed some years before the actual Bauhaus. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutscher_Werkbund Edit: here's a quote from their homepage that I found: "Of course, NOMOS Glashütte is traditionally cautious when it comes to complications: The NOMOS designers believe in the guidelines of the Deutscher Werkbund, they like to keep the dials clean and the cases slender-and complications tend to take up a lot of space in both. For an interesting take on Bauhaus I suggest Tom Wolfe's book "From Bauhaus to Our House". The ideological roots of the Bauhaus movement are quite interesting. If Corbusier were alive today he would absolutely demand that you never mod your Nomos.

Great video, especially helping me understand the history of BH design. I have recommended Nomos to many friends. However, I still cannot bring myself to buy one. There are two reasons for myself. 1) I find that I would become bored with the design, and I would eventually move it out of the collection. Simplicity is nice, but I want something that I also feel compelled to stare at all day long. I think their midnight blue offerings would bring me the closest. I like watches that I can become lost in -- I'm not sure that I would lose myself in any of their current designs. 2) The price point is a double edged sword. I love that they are true German inside and out. They don't pretend like some of the Swatchgroup owed brands. However, I also don't see them as a prestigious or luxury brand. They are a people's brand, very accessible. I would personally prefer to save for a Lange and know I have something very special on my wrist. I just do not feel that Nomos has that special or "X" factor to it.

Am I crazy or is Nomos already doing the things suggested in the video? They are Bauhaus, yes, but they already are colourful, playful and experimental. Even some of the pieces shown in this video fit the bill; the Metro, the Weltzeit, the Autobahn (just to name a few) Which other watch manufacturer makes anything that looks like these? Great video about Bauhaus and its core design elements/specifics. I especially like that you pointed out that most of the Bauhaus school is present in today's everyday life and also with other non-Bauhaus watch manufacturers. I like most of these other designs which are not as conformative (law-abiding) as Nomos. With the help of your video I realized why I don't like Nomos' watches. They are too technical, too industrial, too delicate, too unnatural for my liking. Lifeless so to speak.

Great video, but I'd rather see you come up with your own design rather than go for a botched Orion. Nomos is true to the Bauhaus ideology, and yes sometimes play it a bit safe with their design. However, Nomos have mastered their approach, and that's what made a fan of theirs.

Very Interesting and you are right when you expect from a brand which is based on the Bauhaus ideas and ideals to be more joyful and experimental ... . A good example for being this and priced very basic is Imme Watch... . Having now a Kickstarter campaign for a very joyful designed Regulator watch... Playing with this Marine Chronometer theme (minutes from the center - hours and seconds from a subdial) and trying to reduce it to the essence without losing a bit of an eye twinkle and self Ironie is something I love at this watch and why I backed it... .
