T2 SDE is a very different kind of Linux distro, more akin to something like Gentoo but when should you actually use it and what value does it provide.

T2SDE/Rene Rebe needs smore love, hands, and support: this guy regularly takes releases from Intel, AMD, etc and finds uncaught, serious low level errors that would otherwise make it into production around the world, patches them, only for these mega companies to respond with "thanks, can you write us more tests for free?" T2SDE by Rene essentially serves, along with his habits similar to e.g. OpenBSD as a filter to catch things and get those things returned to upstream that less professional approaches wouldn't, that despite being a rolling source based system.

I have a question about the problems of getting cross-compilation to work: What were the problems you faced? Was it getting the cross-compiler to work? Personally when I need to cross-compile a C or C++ project these days I just use Zig, so I may be out of the loop here.

cross-compiling a whole system is A LOT more difficult than just one program.

@@AmeliaBSD sure, but you can set Zig as the C (or C++) compiler, and well, that's why I asked what problems he faced since that would be interesting

@@kuhluhOG right, but I don't see what zig provides that clang doesn't (seeing that they're both llvm under the hood, and that's doing the heavy lifting). i know zig has some cross-compilation features, but for those to work, you need a sysroot and that's where the complexity comes in.

@@AmeliaBSD Yes, Zig needs a sysroot to be able to cross-compile. Zig has the advantage, that it has set that up for you out of the box from any target to any target (including multiple version and for targets which support it multiple libcs if you need them).

@@kuhluhOG and that's really quite a huge feature, especially if you want to compile a handful of programs for uneventful platforms. but again, once you want to start patching your core libraries and/or use tier 2/3 platforms, i image it would be more of a hassle than it's worth. thus, the T2 approach. that said, i think what andrew & co are doing is quite great.
