C Zwieg Shrek 5 is about Shrek fathering his kids in their older ages. Not like, adult. Maybe 12-14? Have the plot be centered around the kids and Shreks relationship with them. Shrek 3 brings up Shrek’s fear of fatherhood and we don’t actually get that much outside of the mundanity of it in Shrek Forever After. Maybe one of the kids runs away. Shrek has to track them down with the help of Fiona and the other two kids. Side characters from the past movies come in along the way, having met the wandering kid. Maybe that kid and Shrek in particular are always at odds and that kid just doesn’t think highly of Shrek-always assuming the worst from him (perhaps he never talks about his epic adventures because even years later he doesn’t see them as heroic acts, but rather just things he had to do). Shrek takes time on the journey to realize that while he’s tried to give his kids the best life, he hasn’t connected with them on a personal level as he sees that he’s also distant to his other kids. They love their dad but they just don’t feel close emotionally, don’t feel like they can share their interests and whatnot. At the same time, the kid starts meeting old friends and foes from movies past and learns more about the kind of life their dad had, and begins to see why so many people hold him in high regard. Eventually they reunite and Shrek promises that he’ll start to be better at connecting with his kids, while the kid promises to not assume the worst in him because of how much they’ve learned about him. And that’s just off the top of my head at 2am. Also, why are you being so hostile with this comment? I was being lighthearted and you came in very aggressive. That’s not very cool of you.

Merlin was superfluous, they could have had Shrek and Arthur camp out for a night and have the talk themselves, then hike back Far Far Away. Arthur was superfluous, they could have just as easily given Fiona a brother who Charming kidnaps before power transfers, and have Shrek leave to the swamp while Fiona stays in a sort of lovers spat. All of the princesses were superfluous, the BS double cross from Rapunzel was boring and served no purpose, it would probably have been better if Charming forced Fiona to be in his play.

Reminds me of the time my 2 year old said “Over the past hundred years, cinema has grown to become the dominant form of visual storytelling and of course like any other medium, you have your typical debates on what the most effective form of storytelling is but I will not be talking about any of these debates. Instead, my argument for today is simply this: Why Shrek the Third is easily the worst of the Shreks and therefore should be stricken from the Shrek canon and I have a series of points starting with one: Too. Many. Characters. Okay. To recap, who is introduced in Shrek 1? Well, you got Shrek, Fiona and Donkey. Simple. Beautiful. Done. In Shrek 2, it gets a little more crowded. They introduced Puss and Boots. They introduced Fiona’s parents and of course Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming. So far, so good. That’s fine. In Shrek the Third, who do they introduce? They introduce the princesses? Arthur Penndragon? Merlin? None of these characters are core characters. Gun to my head, I could not tell you a single thing they do. Hey, you know what ruined Spider-Man 3? Too. Many. Characters! Hey, you know what ruined The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Too. Many. Characters! They’re just overstuffed with fluff. Why? Just... Number Two: The Villain. Every good movie deserves a strong villain, right? Show of hands, who... who is the villain in Shrek 1? That’s right: Lord Farquaad, charismatic, comedic, wonderfully portrayed by the incomparable John. And then Shrek 2, who are the villains in Shrek 2. Well, the iconic Fairy Godmother. You know she has that beautiful song and her, her bumbling sidekick of a son, Prince Charming, you know. He compliments her beautifully, it’s all good. Now, can you recall who the villain is in Shrek the Third? I’ll wait. Yeah, you’re having trouble, you know why? It’s because the villain in Shrek 3 is Prince Charming again! Yeah, they got so lazy, they just recycled the weaker villain from the previous movie and made him the primary villain of Shrek the Third. Awful! Now, before I continue, I want to talk about Shrek 4’s villain and I can already hear a lot of you say “THEY MADE A SHREK FOUR?!” Yes, they did, and it’s a delight because the villain is Rumplestiltskein, a well rounded, quirky villain, with quips and wonderful, pity little, you know, he’s, he’s a, he’s a strong villain but this, this is lazy. This is lazy writing. They’re just reusing... YAH! Number 3. Shrek the Third is superfluous. Now, what do I mean by that? Well, let’s recap what the purpose of each Shrek movie is. Shrek 1 introduces us to this wonderful character and this world. It’s the origin story. In Shrek 2, they do worldbuilding, and they flesh out these characters, you know. They create more of a world. In Shrek the Third... they, I don’t, they have, they have babies? I guess that’s the big takeaway from Shrek the Third but guess what, guess what? Shrek 4 opens with a montage of the babies! You don’t need to see Shrek 3, like there’s no point, there’s no purpose. Shrek 4 recaps everything perfectly with the baby montage which leads me to the Shrek viewing order I’ve carefully crafted here. First, you start on the left with Shrek 1 and obviously, you go to Shrek 2 and then when you finish Shrek 2, you BOOP BOOP BOOP BOOP, just skip 3, go right to 4. Nothing of merit, nothing of importance have been lost, I promise you and coincidentally, this is also my Shrek ranking order, from best to worst, it’s 1, 2 and 4 and I just would love to pretend that 3 never happened which leads me to my final nail in the coffin argument. You know who else ignores the events of Shrek the Third? Um, Shrek 4 ignores Shrek the Third. They ignore Shrek 3 hardcore. At no point, shut up, at no point do any of the characters reminisce on the events of the previous movie. Donkey’s never like “Ayo, Shrek, remember all those crazy characters we, we conversed with?” Like, there’s just no purpose for Shrek the Third at all. And honestly I’m, Shrek 4 is largely underrated and I’m a little pissed that more people don’t uh, agree with me on this, on this sentiment. Oh, and one more thing, you see there is a light at the end of the tunnel here because Dreamworks has confirmed that they are indeed making a Shrek 5, coming out at some point in 2019 and you bet your bottom dollar I will be doing a frame by frame analysis of the first trailer as soon as it drops. Being Prince Charming’s Biggest Fan I honestly liked that Prince Charming was the villain. I didn’t really enjoy the movie mostly because of Arthur I think he was a completely useless character but other than that the movie was fine, until the end. Shrek is saved by the good guys when Prince Charming is about to kill him but then the villains have them outnumbered and Arthur comes out of nowhere and says “Be good guys. :D” all of them go, oh yeah this is such a good idea I haven’t thought of that before neither has anyone in the entire world even the people that made me the villain didn’t tell me that but this random kid says it and I should do it then. Prince Charming‘s happily ever after is being taken away once again he is mad, so he tries to kill Arthur (Arthur should have died) Shrek stops him then Prince Charming attacks Shrek, Shrek pretends to be defeated then says we can solve this by talking to the person he ruined his life 2 times, was in a way the reason of his mother’s death and Shrek expects him to just go “Yeah, sure.”. So then Shrek throws him under the tower proving Lord Farquaad and Fairy Godmother right, that he is an ugly, disgusting ogre who has no feelings or empathy a monster who killed a man and did not give him a second chance which was the whole point of the movie Prince Charming and the villains wanting their happily ever after their second chance to prove themselves, it completely ruined everything. Shrek the franchise is about getting rid of Fairy Tale stereotypes has a Fairy Tale stereotype the villain dies at the end the ogre is a monster the villain doesn’t deserve a second chance, apparently Shrek deserved a second chance but Prince Charming didn’t?, he deserved to die because he was seeking revenge? Puss in Boots got a second chance as well but apparently if you are the antagonist you don’t deserve a second chance even if you aren’t that bad.

The only problem I have with your argument is that the events of Shrek 4 take place in an alternate reality in which Shrek was never born, so using the argument "Shrek 4 never references Shrek 3" is invalid, as it has not even happened for the majority of the movie. Aside from this I can agree with you that Shrek 3 was rather lackluster, I can only vaguely recall the plot. You did not mention, though I may just be remembering it wrong, that in Shrek 3, Shrek (THE MAIN CHARACTER) pushes off his duty as the main character onto that stupid Arthur kid which is really just a drain on the whole point of having the movie be about Shrek. I feel like your analysis could've been made somewhat more substantial, too, considering you did not talk about Donkey's Christmas Shrektacular (which is also a part of the Shrek canon). Aside from all of this, I think this was a very detailed, well written, and well produced criticism of Shrek 3, and I look forward to your frame-by-frame analysis of the Shrek 5 trailer.

The beginning and end of the movie takes place in the canon Shrek™ universe. And in these scenes, what do we see? Shrek enjoying a lovely party with all of his closest friends. But OH, what's missing from this scene? Well it's his good friends Merlin and Arthur, who he developed a close bond with in Shrek 3. You think Shrek would invite the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Blind Mice before inviting his dearest of friends Arthur who took a major responsibility from Shrek so he could live the life he wanted? I think NOT! This doesn't even mention the fact that Shrek could have run into some backwards alternate universe version of those characters. Shrek 4 deliberately left out anything involving Shrek 3, (excluding his babies) because it was trash. Point RE-VALID. Checkmate.
