I've honestly ever known Silver because of the spin-off games, and since I was born in the mid 2000's, I wasn't able to buy older Sonic games and experience them since they don't sell the games anymore, but it's nice to know there's more to Silver than meets the eye.

There's a tiny detail in Generations that I really like. The first time you fight Silver, he's fighting you because he's not sure of what's going on, and doesn't know whether Sonic is an imposter or not. During the intro cinematic of the fight, both he and Sonic are frowning, taking it seriously. However, if you replay the boss, before you enter the fight, Silver says "this should be fun!", and the two are instead smiling in the boss intro. Now that they know they're on the same side, they're treating the fight like a simple sparring match.

Easy reason for Silver to time travel back: Just have him have SUCH a good future that he does it just for his own enjoyment. Not for a purpose any grander than "Time Travel Fun". Then you can make reasons for him to *stay* instead of for him to go back at all.

I'll be honest, I do love IDW Silver, especially with how he was pretty much the MVP during the conclusion of the Metal Virus saga, and I know some don't like the lovable dork angle, but I find it weirdly endearing. That and I found the Annual story of him doing a gardening project with Blaze due to being unable to in the future was cute. Plus they snuck the infamous quote in it which was funny.

IDW Silver isn't bad at all, and it works within the Comics universe. I just think that, when compared to 06's Silver, it is a step down. But, at least they were consistent with Silver's character in the comics. (and that short story in the annual was pretty nice).

Makes me wonder how 06's story could've gone down if Silver knew who Sonic was and looked up to him before Mephilies manipulated him into believing Sonic was the Iblis Trigger. That would've given Silver's decision to try and kill Sonic more weight, as he would have genuinely respected Sonic and seen him as a hero, and might even be in disbelief that Sonic was responsible for the future going bad, but ultimately would be desperate enough to fight his former hero in the hope that it fixed the future.

Also (what Sega succeeded at) that would ruin Silver's reason to be in this series. ive been thinking, can't he just stay in the past? im sure he has more friends in there than in the future and i think it'd be good for him to stay with his friends and help them while knowing his future is already fixed. or maybe they could just make something up like this is where he belonged the whole time. like maybe he was born here but got sent to the future as a baby or something and that messed up the timeline. idk i just think its a more simple excuse to have him here instead of sending him back and forth in time

Oh the Irony. When Sonic 06 came out, people hated the game as well as anything in a Sonic game that relates to 06, humans, friends, a dark story. Now sonic is barely allowed to have those things, the fans who praised the game for it's ambition come up, and point the good parts of that.

@@markharbath31X9 Let's not get _too_ optimistic about that. There are plenty of storylines from both Archie and IDW where Flynn might've had a good idea but SEGA fucked him over. Those restrictions aren't going to go away just because he's writing in-house at SEGA instead of at a third party. If anything, they'll get tighter. The rules that made IDW Shadow a thing are still things that will need to be worried about.

I actually like Silvers characterization in TSR. Almost every time he's gone back in time, it's usually to save his future. So I think with him going back just for fun. We get to see this more dorky side of him. A side of him that's just relaxed and wants to have fun. A side of him that reminds us. He's still a teenager. Also I think he plays up his naivety a bit to mess with Sonic.

Silver's portrayal in the comics (mostly Archie) seems like an external thing. I saw it getting a lot of praise from people who found him "bad" in 06, as they liked that the comics supposedly "fixed" Silver by turning him into a total moron. It certainly didn't help that Archie were barred from using Mephiles and Iblis, so Silver's ruined future was instead of the product of a mysterious betrayal among the Freedom Fighters. Then, after doing the "I'm gonna fix the future by murdering this guy!" thing on three different characters, one of which implied that Silver doesn't understand the concept of _nicknames,_ it got revealed that the traitor wasn't a traitor at all, it was Sally being mind-controlled. Also Silver was barely in that story even though it was supposedly what his entire arc had been leading up to. _Also_ the idea that Mecha Sally could destroy the world looked really silly when the only protagonist she ever defeated was a depowered Bunnie. *Also* it never actually ended because Ian Flynn decided to jam a completely pointless filler arc about Knuckles into the middle of the arc just to drag its already-bloated carcass out to 25 issues, and by the time it was done, the Ken Penders lawsuit had set the entire comic on fire and rendered a true conclusion impossible. And then it wasn't even remotely concluded in the reboot, not only was Silver gone, Sally was back to normal (and in fact, hadn't been roboticized at all in the new timeline), but the only plot thread left over from the original timeline that got continued in the reboot was... _the Tails Doll._ Yeah, any semblance of a satisfactory conclusion to this two-year story arc that was also the climax of a plot thread that had been Silver's _entire identity_ in the Archie book was tossed aside... for a creepypasta meme. From then on, Silver just kinda... existed, like he did in the games during the 2010s. He got a second Sonic Universe arc that made his future generically dystopian, and seemed to be going somewhere in regards to that before the plot got interrupted by a literal Time Eater knockoff called the Second Devourer that went nowhere, but that was about it. At least his first SU arc was okay. Also, on a darker note, the first SU arc was set in a "possible future" that was meant to be a divergence from the 25 Years Later timeline, but due to the death of Knuckles' shitty dad in the present-day, it became the only "possible future" timeline that could still happen. Oops.

Honestly, if I have to give his inclusion in Forces any credit, I think Silver vs Infinite is a great cutscene and easily the best in the game (not much of an accomplishment but hear me out). It starts out with Silver and Infinite duking it out, showing us that even after Sonic's disappearance, there still remain some powerhouses in the Resistance capable of going toe-to-toe with the big bad. The dialogue here is also surprisingly memorable, with Infinite delivering a delicious anime one-liner, Silver refusing to believe his lies (a nice follow-up to his arc of losing his naivete in 06), followed by the best line in the game, "Seeing is believing." It not only builds off of the previous lines, but also perfectly encapsulates Infinite's powers and how he intimidates those around him. Infinite and Silver then quickly tussle before Silver is ultimately knocked to the ground, proving that at the end of the day Infinite is still the one who beat Sonic, and Silver simply couldn't stack up. Sonic then swoops in and tries to lighten the mood with some admittedly decent banter, before Infinite activates the Phantom Ruby and tiggers one of the best boss fights in the game. This cutscene feels like it has genuine scale; that this is just one skirmish in a massive war, and how the Resistance is barely scraping by with it's most powerful fighters being trashed by Infinite. I keep seeing these glimmers of greatness in this game, from this cutscene, to the scrapped script, to some of the concept art, to Null Space, and even to the somewhat eerie final battle. It feels like this game was supposed to be so much more, but was...limited, somehow. But I suppose that's the norm for this franchise.

I just wanna say: YES YES & YES!!!! This video touches on all the points regarding silver as a character that I’ve been saying forever. Silver is my favorite character in the entire franchise and that is mainly because of Sonic 06. I stand by 06 because I see both the good and bad that came from it while other just wanna see the bad side of it. I find the game to be an A tier game for me but besides that… I have not been a fan of what they did with silver’s character after 06. Playing through the 2 Rivals games, he was … okay, but after that… just no. Forces and Team Sonic Racing didn’t help at all. IDW Silver is way to bubbly for me and doesn’t really match what he used to be. The only good thing about Silver during this era was the Japanese dialogue from Team Sonic Racing. He was in character, just like in 06. I highly recommend watching the dialogue for meta era games in the Japanese cutscenes because everyone is in character, with very very small out of character moments, kinda. Idk how any one can hate him. Hes just a happy little dude who is doing his best. I hate the retcon of 06 because it took away Silvers character arc as well as Shadow's, and to us the player we remember it. So its not retconed to us! Its so confusing and I hate it, they shouldn't have done that at the end of 06. I haven't played 06 in a while but a reason I can think of for Silver staying is because he saved the future and Blaze was his only friend. So he stays knowing the future is saved and that he has friends now. He helps out the problems there so he can stay the optimistic hero who helps out. In Forces even if he had accepted that Sonic was dead, he still would have said that they can beat Infinite and Eggman. Why do the writers have to consistently mess up my favorite characters??

Actually, in the IDW comics, Silver traveled from the future at the start of the Metal Virus arc because he saw a world covered in metal. Meanwhile, Eggman and Starline already started the path to that doomed future with the first Zombots.

Silver is definitely in my top 3 favorite sonic characters. I love his design and character, and basically everything about him lol. It’s a shame a lot of people don’t care about him just because he came from 06. I hope SEGA and everyone else can give him a second chance. In terms of Silver I feel like what Sega should do is try to make a story where when he is spending time at the future and when he meets Eggman Nega who finds a way to get insane power and manages to destroy everything in his world and forces him to go to the past to ask for his friends help. Whilst feeling almost hopeless he feels motivated by Sonic and his friends to face Eggman Nega. Eggman Nega could even resurrect previous villians like Dark Gaia and Black Doom to destroy the world. This could have normal Eggman also want to work with Eggman Nega to defeat the heroes until he realizes that Eggman Nega has completely lost his mind which would lead to Eggman to question his humanity.

I used to hate Silver but I grew to love him and honestly he deserves so much better I'd like to point out Silver's theme (Dreams of an Absolution) also emphasizes optimism that's his thing tho optimism even in the most hopeless of situations The idea of Silver going to the past to hang out with his friends would be such a simple decision. Why is he around when nothing disastrous is happening? He's just there to vibe if he's around when something catastrophic is happening simply pick from A or B or C A) He went to hang out with his friends but Team Sonic has as much luck as a bull in a mirror shop. *Wholesome and funny* B) He saw the disater in a history book or something and went to help his friends with it. *Simple and straight to the point* C) A threat from his future gets into the past and started causing problems and he feels it's his responsibility to take care of it. *The least likely to happen but it's an idea*

Silver’s so gallant, the way he brings Elise out of her sadness, and gives her the chaos emeralds when he went back in time. He’s used to seeing devastation on a daily basis, which is why he’s so positive and brings back everyone’s hope. Also his friendship with Blaze is so wholesome. Also his naïveté makes him relatable, as he appreciates everything, like the desert scene with Amy, or when he teams up with Sonic. He’s naive because he’s known only hell.

Honestly the best reason he has to constantly return to the past is that his new friends are there. THATS literally all the writers needed to give him. And like say in Forces his friends could've called him to help with the resistance. I love Silver and oh god I wish he was treated better. I'm not surprised though pretty much every Sonic character besides Sonic.

I feel that when it comes to Silver, the fact that his futures fucked doesn't really have to be the only reason why he comes to the past. unlike Knuckles, Silver isn't the guardian of really anything, Blaze is in her own dimension, and he has that good future. so maybe just saying that he wanted to hang out or help his friends could be enough to justify him being there. I feel that could appeal to his kind hearted nature and his optimism could give his friends a moral boost when needed. this would probably be easier that coming up with a reason which could mitigate the feeling that's he's just being dragged along with just a lame excuse as to why he's even there. of course I mean this in the games, the comics did a pretty good job explaining why he was there.

Silver is my definitive favorite character in all of the sonic franchise and I really wish he got more spotlight to focus on his character. Honestly he doesn't need to be from the future, they could've use the fact 06 erased itself from continuity to introduce a new version of him that retained his character arc and then expanded on it. Also I absolutely love his idw version being a naive kid that idolized all these heroes from the past and is just excited to meet them while still having his serious moments and never forgetting why he is here.

FINALLY, someone said EVERYTHING I've been thinking! I'm so tired of people giving me the stink eye or some rude comment when I'm asked who my favourite Sonic character is and I say Silver. I'm gonna direct them to this video when that happens from now on. As for Forces, I do agree he could have had a much bigger role and SHOULD have. In fact, a part of me wonders if Sonic getting captured could have been the kick-off of an apocalyptic world that would have been a REASON for Silver to come back to the past. That never really got explored, though. Like, I get that the focus was supposed to be on the custom character (And don't get me wrong, it's a reason I actually kind of LIKE Forces), but there are other characters there too, right? Explore them! Flesh them out! Show how they do or do not bond with the custom characters! Really great character analysis, I didn't knew he appeared in Colors DS, the inclusion of him by going to the past to visit an amusement park I gonna be honest, doesn't feel entirely bad, like "I went to the grocery shop for candy and accidentally ended up saving the world", it sounds goofy, but it could be a lot of fun if well executed. I was relatively young when I first played 06 and it was even one of my first Sonic games, the first being distinctly Colors for the DS, so that may be why I'm biased for Silver and 06 as a whole, but I LOVE Silver, easily my favorite character and the one I connect to the most, you actually putting what I felt into words makes me like the character and game even more. I also firmly believe that if so much energy, time, and money didn't go into those god tier animations at the beginning of each of our hero's stories, the graphics of the game would have massively improved, as for the story... Yeah, nothing could have fixed sonic and shadow's stories.

14:25, here's an idea: In the end of Sonic 06 (I haven't seen the ending, so I'm making my own), have Silver go back to the future along with Team Dark (as they were stuck in the future) and have them take Blaze's position and I think Blaze leaving because her dimension was in trouble makes much more sense than her dying.

It pisses time off that they never explore Silver at all. I loved this character since I was a kid and I wished we saw more of him. I wanted him to have his own game, and even his own year like shadow. Hopefully he’ll have his time to shine in the future. He deserves a second chance to be redeemed. It’s not his fault Sega rushed 06 and it became the mess it is today.

I honestly think Silver should only return in the context of his own spin off franchise, kind of like Shadow The Hedgehog but good. Expand upon his gameplay from 06, take notes from how P-06 handles Silver and give us games in the Future. This allows them to be more experimental with the series under Silver, giving us new characters, locations and gameplay styles without fucking up the main series with any bad decisions. Since Shadow is immortal have him appear in this series and maybe give him a mentor role for Silver, they worked really well together in the short time they spent in Aquatic base so I wouldn't mind seeing more of that relationship fleshed out in a full game.

I just had an idea that instead of making Silver from the future, we got a Silver from Blaze's dimension. This Silver would not be the same one we knew in 06, but I think it would be easier to come up with an excuse to cross dimensions than to travel back in time. On top of that, it would explain why Blaze doesn't know Sonic in 06, as she would also be a different Blaze.

Silver was nerfed hard in Forces in order to prop up Infinite. You can tell the writers need you to believe that without Sonic, none of the supporting cast can get anything done, which is a betrayal to what we know Silver is capable of.

I think Silver's characterization actually works in Forces better than one would think. Him saying "I'm an optimist but I'm also a realist", tells us that he is still the same optimist we know, but he recognizes the need to stay realistic. This isn't a naive Silver who doesn't understand how the world works. This is a more mature Silver who tries to strike a working balance between optimism and realism. During his brief encounter with Infinite he shows he still carries his optimism with him. When Infinite goes on his spiel about showing there is no hope, Silver scoffs at the idea. Granted, Sonic Forces' writing is atrocious and the utilization of the entire cast was just as bad. There's also the argument about whether Silver should be as mature as he seems to be. I also would like what we got from Sonic 06. More of a pondering and optimistic hero than just "I'm from the future! Fall before my telekinetic powers!"

This video made me understand why Silver is my favorite character. His optimism and compassion are traits that I value in my day to day life, and I appreciate how his writing allowed him to be this spark of hope. His insecurity is also what connected me with the character, and honestly what made playing through his story very emotional and engaging. Silver has always crossed me as sort of an E-102 or Emeral character. A highlight character in THEIR game, but never needing more. Though Silver is a little different because of just how bad of a flop 06 was among most people. His character got missed largely due to issues with the game. Another try is what Silver ALWAYS feels like. Though I also look at Shadow and then I'm reminded of the actual key difference between other one-off Sonic characters. Shadow EASILY could've been exclusive to Adventure 2 and that might've worked well, but he came back just because he was considerably marketable. Silver exists as he does now because of marketability. He is a fair option to sell on. It's also why some of the best robotic characters don't really stick around I feel, outside of being either great narrative points or Metal Sonic.
