As a singer from back in the 90s, one of the most interesting things I've come across lately, is the trick where singers would monitor with two speakers out of phase instead of headphones. This apparantly helps with pitch immensely. Two of note that have used this are Kenny loggins and chris Cornell. I wish I had known about that especially for doubling.

Factors why I think (if anyone cares, and I'm not defending vocalists) that vocals are the toughest instrument to play and succeed with on a recording (speaking as a singer AND instrumentalist): 1) More variables. An incredible amount of nuances can vary so slightly to give a completely different (and often, unfortunate) read of a line. 2) It's an internal instrument. Ultimately, the singer is, in essence, playing a slightly different instrument every day (and that's not even getting into emotional/psychological shifts). 3) It's the most versatile instrument. The good news is that it can get an infinite variety of sounds. The bad news is the same as the good news, and those sounds can be wrong, however slightly. 4) It requires exact audiation. In other words, it's not fretted, it's not something that can be fudged in moments by getting the fingering right on a static instrument, then recover to be inspired. Auto tune is often used to remedy this, and that's why auto tune is shit (except for rare spot treatment). 5) Very seldom, if ever, can a vocal be buried in a mix. 6) Vocals are usually the last thing, so they're expected to mesh with everything that's come before. (Oh, this has become so long it sounds like something a singer would go on and on about.)

I’m a 63 yr old bass player & singer kind of lol. First time I was in a professional studio we went to do harmonies after everything else was done. Now my bass parts were no problem but my vocals…..after a couple takes the engineer comes over the talk back & with a smile says..” hey Joe despite what you may have heard about what can be done in a studio I can’t make you sound like Paul McCartney I can only make you sound less shitty than you do lol” ….point taken.

OMFG Just NO to ice skating. You NEVER allow your lead guitarist, drummer, bassist, triangle player...*anyone*...who uses their hands to ice skate just before or during a tour. My god, that is like inviting catastrophe AND causing dozens of people to lose their jobs, all because one person in the band...much less the lead vocalist and guitarist...decided to behave like a self-absorbed idiot who can't equate possible consequences with actions and go ice skating. This is why professional sports teams FORCE their players to sign such extensive contracts on what they can and cannot do while under contract...even in their free time...even in the off-season. One snapped wrist...one twist of the knee...bye-bye entire tour, and all the record sales that would've happened with it....and every single job, right down to the people who work security and concessions (drivers, roadies, tour managers, guitar techs...and many, many more). ice skating smh

The entire key to what Justin said here, btw, first time watcher here, long time Beato watcher, however- is when you said, "When I GO BACK". Yup- when I record my own vocals- same thing. Do several takes, listen back, this is ok, that's ok, oh, I like this, that sucks, great! All done! ... Leave for the day... But we always have to GO BACK. Even when we tell ourselves not to, because we KNOW.. we just know.. it's not what Frodo said, "There is no going back", but far too many times, we wish that was the case.. This was awesome to watch. Rick was born for this, lol.

Good lord I relate to this. I love singers, I’ve built my career as an instrumentalist around singers I adore. But when I’m producing, vocals are my least favorite part by far. It’s insanely tedious getting a final vocal where every part feels great. It can feel like a war of attrition until everyone kind of gives up and accepts that it’s good enough 😂
@le_th_
@le_th_ Жыл бұрын
lol The way you describe this is both humorous and somewhat tragic. Honestly, good enough should suffice. We should'nt be expecting perfection from people. That is what we have autotunes for today (if you're the sort who requires a non-human sort of robotic perfection). Good enough seems like it should be just that...good enough. That said, I'm the person LISTENING to all these finished productions that all you producers labor over for hours so people like me can listen effortlessly. I'm thinking there must be songs that producers have to work so hard on that they can't even listen to them a year or two later without cringing, remembering how hard it was to achieve. lol
@felderup

@@le_th_ i like glen frickers way of doing it, he autotunes the singers first efforts and gets them to learn the perfect version, then records them live singing, so it doesn't sound mechanical. benefit, the singer... goes away.

@mrnelsonius5631 Жыл бұрын
@@felderup that’s how I work. I put a real-time auto tune on the singer while they are singing. When I sing myself it’s helpful, you can hear it moving the note up or down so you know where to improve. It’s also builds confidence while performing. Once good takes are recorded I turn it off and correct any unpleasant moments manually. This way things feel more natural, it’s not robotized, but still “perfect enough” to meet modern listening expectations for pitch. Split the diff

I can understand where Rick is coming from. It has been tough for me to lock in my vocals, and I don't have the equipment that either of you have. It is so much harder to tune and hone a living instrument, where so many little things can affect your voice.

I'm an amateur jazz singer and singing feels like I am in a rocket ship with 5000 buttons and switches, lamps blinking everywhere (especially pitch but far from being the only disturbance) and I think I know what half of the buttons do. I have to land this thing everytime I perform on a different planet while there is an invisible goblin that plays around with the buttons while I fly, before and after. Starting a difficult piece feels like a fighter pilot but it helps to have pieces I love, where I know what to convey and it has somehow locked in. It helped having experience in acting but being a useful actor is still miles away from being a functioning vocalist. I also know that instrumentalists think they could sing just as good or better but then they still don't do it. Because from the inside, it's much more difficult than it looks. The audience should sometimes be happy they won't ever hear your inner voice while singing :) Also there are pieces where you are expected to function just like one more alto sax or trumpet. I try to avoid these because they don't let us add our value. Good music is a conversation, not a march.

Really interesting interaction between these two legends. Recording is a strange scene. In my experience recordings with bands was always under the pump and so you had to have the practice under the belt to render close to the band vision. As a solo producer, I lay down the tracks with options to choose or sometimes space to develop a change. When there is enough substance I might start massaging some vox ideas into the groove. I might have lyrics written on things I observe or have some perspective on, and use these as a start, and they are always fluid. Maybe, singers get too precious about what they are articulating and get too fixed. I'm not really a singer and have limited range but I try to enhance the rest of what is going on as apposed to fighting the backing. Lately, playing acoustic versions of my tunes and jamming covers of the music I grew up with helps center the basics of what music and playing should be. Thanks Justin and Rick.

For live performance (solo with guitar), when I am not connecting right, I stop, take a breath, look down and remember, for a moment, why I learned this song originally, and tap in to that emotion. For me, it works. Especially if I have played it many times in many places. I go back to the original emotion.

There have been times when I have been tracking lead vocals and I wanted to but my head through the monitor. I think of lead singers as kind of a cross between a musician and an actor, and I imagine that a producer dealing with a lead singer in a recording session is not unlike a film director dealing with a lead actor on a film set. The energy must be similar.

As a drummer I see it like this: Vocalists (and to some extent guitarists) have the most pressure in the band. Entertaining the crowd, stage antics, keeping their voice in check, etc. That´s probably quite taxing to them. That usually comes with some kind of an inflated ego problem. Once you realize that something like this is going on it gets easier to deal with and understand their sometimes primadonna-like behaviour. As a drummer the drums are kind of my shield between me and the audience. Vocalists don´t have that luxury, they are there and exposed every time all the time.

Part of the issue is that singing is the job where every little thing can affect it. I find some vocals I've done were tedious when it came to editing, but I didn't mind it to much. I usually do 2-4 takes song depending. That being said, I found that I have worked with a person who didn't understand when I was sick (Had and autoimmune that effected lungs/breath control. . . drummer couldn't wrap his head around this idea. . . so now I record and perform alone)

@le_th_
@le_th_ Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking Steve Perry outdoes Christine McVie vocally, as lovely as her singing and music is/was. Freddie Mercury probably does, as well, especially live, but also recorded. Bonnie Rait's studio version of "I Can't Make You Love Me" is superior, not so much vocally, but in evoking emotion. There are many songs that are vocally stronger or more evocative than Songbird, which is a beautiful song. Even the Beach Boys have better vocal performances recorded than Songbird. Brad Delp on Boston's first album? I dislike the man's character, but I cannot find fault with his singing on that first album, each performance was just impressive. You might feel a very sentimental attachment, linked to the time and place when this song first came out, and what it meant to you, which is truly wonderful and not at all to be discounted. That is the magic music holds for many of us. It takes us right back to the feeling we had during that place and time. Like you point out, they had to try all night long, over and over again, to get one good take they could use. The real test is can these vocalists deliver live when they tour, which is really hard to do night after night. Do they sound better...as good...hit and miss...or cringe-worthy when they perform. It's a huge strain on their vocal cords to perform at that level, night after night, and it requires rest, humidification, protection from the cold outdoor temps if performing outside in fall, or at altitude, and many other accommodations. When you see a band live, and the vocalist is even better live than on the recording, that is when you stand there, slack-jawed at what a truly extraordinary vocal performer they are. Few can deliver that live.

Unrelated to this video - would love to hear your take on Primal Scream. They have explored a lot of genres in their time and are obviously most famous for making Screamadelica which is a classic dance album, but they've also made some very authentic-sounding traditional, bluesy rock in the vein of the Stones. I think Screamadelica is a masterpiece but am also very partial to a lot of seventies stuff like the Faces, Mick Taylor-era Rolling Stones, Dr. John, so I for one welcome their straight-ahead rock records, too, particularly the slower songs on Give Out but Don't Give Up. Whenever Primal Scream do a rock album it tends to polarise people because it's probably just come after something that sounded completely different. You might've seen this quote from Steven Van Zandt: 'Primal Scream could be the biggest band in the world. They are fantastic when they make rock records - once every 10 years'. I personally feel that's a reductionist take on their output by someone who just isn't interested in their other stuff but also get that their genre shifts mean their appeal will change for different people from album to album. What's your two cents?

An engineer I worked with did very well with female vocalists who were having a difficult time with their part by suggesting that they try singing naked. Many agreed to try that. It worked for him on many levels.

Got to agree with Rick on this. My better half is the singer of our songs and she is great but I find comping vocal and backing vocal tracks mind bindingly tedious, then they often have to be automated to get them to sit "just so" in the mix.

I don't sing or play, but it seems to me that music has become overproduced. If I was a performer, I would want to do the whole song as a single take, not spliced together from many takes. I think people are just used to doing it this way just because the technology allows it. And just because the technology allows it, that doesn't mean we should do it. When you play live on stage, you do one take all the way through. When recording you can do it over again. Just my thoughts.

We always had a rule in our band. If the vocalist couldn't contribute musically in some other way they weren't a vocalist for us. If they can't play an instrument we weren't interested, even if they weren't playing another instrument on stage with us. We just generally observed if a vocalist was only a vocalist many times they had a terrible ear for melody and harmony and other important things.

The guys I work with just have me do 3 full takes, then we comp. If I don't like something in the final comp, I'll just punch in.

I'm a very unknown songwriter and I can sing practically any harmony I can think of, no I'm no being arrogant, at the same time I cannot read a note of music and I dont want any theory to me it's a Magical World' I still love it at my grand old age.

I love music theory, it helps me enormously every day. When I hear notes I know their relationship and what they're called. The Beatles knew no theory (apparently) but George Martin sure did. When something doesn't work in the studio I know why. Someone has to.

Years ago I had put my guitar down after a series of re-occurring issues with life choices 1985 or so. Quite a few years later my sisters then husband tried getting me back into it to back up his singing. It wasn't that easy and I was having trouble bringing back the nuances and muscle memory that were so easy ages ago, he made an issue of thinking picking up singing was just as difficult as my trying to relearn the guitar. What an ass!
