sleep is so important. Don't understand why medical school purposely cause students to lose sleep. Same with Engineering school, they act like "bah.... sleep, you don't need it...."
@Olivia-W
@Olivia-W 6 жыл бұрын
That's my secret. Most of the other students are smarter/better at this than I am, but when they're sleep deprived and I'm well rested, I have an edge. Also, big naps. If you can fit that 1.5h anytime when you don't have class, you win. Anytime you can fit about 20 mins, you do it. That, and exercise + decently healthy diet.

Because it's a form of bootcamp. Medical school has to brainwash the students to accept its authority - no room for questioning. Also why "pimping" is an important part of it too - the fear keeps the students in check. The ones who are too independent and ask questions are more likely to get filtered out. The system requires absolute obedience.

I saw another video, I think on TED talk about the importance of exercise for the brain. It helps you prepare better for exams. So, now my goal is to sleep better and exercise. So sad how we neglect our bodies from what makes them function well.
@vp3841
@vp3841 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, forgoing sleep and excercise is, sadly, the first thing we do when we're in a hurry. And even when we aren't, our current consumerist culture easily talks us into thinking that just one more episode of this show is more important than sleep and hey, that one extra hour of videogames will help you unwind much better after a workday than going to bed early. I don't even want to start on exercise - "you want me to raise my butt from this comfortable chair to do WHAT?!"

I work overnights, my entire house is blacked out during the day with blinds, my neighbours probably think I am a drug dealer and or vampire at this stage. My bedroom has blinds, then thick blackout curtains, I am going to install a third layer of a retractable window awning also you will be surprised how much light fucks with your sleep even a little LED on an appliance. Also get rid of clocks in your bedroom seeing what time it is can prevent you from sleeping if you get anxious about sleep.

Just set your alarm for a reasonable time and go to bed early enough so you are likely to wake up naturally before your alarm. I work overnights so I need to wake up by 21:00 in order to make it to work in time. But I go to bed around 9-10 that's 11 hours of sleep if I slept right up to my alarm. I normally wake up at 19:00 - 20:00 prior to my alarm and when I do I use this time for relaxation and light excercise. It also helps me sleep knowing if I cannot get to sleep quickly, or my sleep quality is crap I can get an extra hour or two of sleep without anxiety.

I avoid using mine, I can't sleep continuously and have nightmares, I can't wake up from my nightmares unless I hear a noise from the real world or if someone notices and wakes me up, so I don't feel inclined to go straight back to sleep until I've spent at least 30min awake so I don't get stuck in a continuation of the same dream again

I think I may have that genetic mutation mentioned on the video. When I sleep more than 8 hours, I feel more lazy, more sensible to emotional response and less smart. When I sleep 4 to 8 hours, i feel hyperactive and productive. I got all the best insights of my life when i lacked of sleep.

3:25 "So you can gain insight when you don't even know there was an insight to find when you sleep on it". Makes me think of the intricate relatedness and immeasurable capacity of the subconscious mind to store and process all sorts of input data, coming up with startling new and creative ideas to previously unimaginable by the limited conscious mind. The power of associating multiple seemingly unrelated ideas is ultimately the hallmark of the creative process. In fact, I suspect that not only lack of sleep stands for the number one cause of most societal problems today, but also an interesting correlation between sleep hours and creativity in general, the ability to think outside the box and behave accordingly. I have always had a feeling there is a strong connection between memory consolidation and hormone regulation, of course all happening during non-REM deep-sleep phase. The jump from short-term memory to long-term memory may very well indicate a strong possibility for higher levels of mental relaxation thus leading to better and more fluid lateral-thinking capabilities (alpha-delta brainwaves/state of flow).

I got premature white hairs on my beard and head, because for two years I was having sleep problems. As soon as I started sleeping better the white hairs stopped popping up. I'm hoping they will go back to being their original color but that will more then likely not happen. Oh sleep...so unimportant at times but very important in the long run.

as far as i know, getting white hair is more due to to often ejaculation
@stevegwizzle3560

David Copperfield. you know, I was also heavily involved in porn back then and I was also masturbating a lot. You could be right about that. I have now stopped watching porn and rarely watch it. It was messing with my everyday drive and motivation to get things done. How do I know this? Because once I stopped, I was more driven and focused on things and projects that I needed to do, and I would actually get out of bed with a need to get things done. It's insane how masturbating n porn can affect a man's body n brain. I'm glad the nofap movement exists.
@davidcopperfield2278
@davidcopperfield2278 8 жыл бұрын
I actually ment all sort of ejaculation, while having sex too. In deed, while masturbating it seems that one does it oftener than with sex, yet it's the ejaculation itself, the loosing of a very essential liquid that bring for exemple white hair. Did you know that to produce 50g of sperm the body takes the same amount of effort as to produce a pound of blood ? so basically every man who is ejaculating a few times a day is a permanent high-amount blood donner !! if you get into personal relationships with older men 40-60 and talk to them, you will find out that those who still have their hair colour are those who really have sex really rare ( once a month, once in two monts ) which is "normal" for that age, they will also seem much more active, having more endurance and so... while those with white hair, if you can get it out of them, are very much probable to masturbate at least a few times a week, which is already a lot for that age.

The last year i slept 5 hours every night when i was lucky. Had to get up at 4am because of my work and after the workday i had to visit a very ill family member at the hospital. My day started 4am and ended 23pm for almost a whole year (on weekends i catched up some sleep hours) - every hour of this year i felt also very stressed because i was worried about my family member. What i can say about this time: My concentration, reaction, memory and mood went down big time. It's like i dumbed down - before i was like the very old "The Simpsons" - Episodes, but now i am like the newer episodes. It's sad!^^ I have more free time now and i can sleep more hours (try to get 7hours), but the effect is still here. Thankfully my mood is better, but the concentration and memory-thing is very annoying. I can't remember my dreams anymore -.- I hope i can "reverse" those effects in the next months with more sleep, sports, better diet and meditation. I also started with 5min cold showers in the morning to work on my self discipline 2 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to your next video. You are doing a great job :) PS: You ever thought about making a video about the effects of Vitamin D ?

I suffered similar symptoms after the most stressfull months at university two years ago. Two months with 4 hours of spleep, I had to train because I play in a competitive level, and I had to prepare many finals at the same time. It took me three weeks to get normal again. The first recovery week, I would sleep from 11 pm to 5.30, I couldnt avoid waking up; then I would have a nap at 3pm, but as soon as the night fell I would feel sick and useless again. I lost 6 kilos during that stressfull time. It was awfull.

The days were long and hard so even if you took notes each day there was no time to study, and you were too tired anyway. Right away the second day I noticed I was doing everything a lot better than I had the day before. I even said something to my trainer about how funny it is, its as if I had more practice even though there was no time all I did was sleep. I'll never forget, he said, "Its always like that."

Thank you for bringing this up. I'm a neurobiology student, currently doing my Master's at Chronobiology Department and I find everything connected to internal rythms endlessly fascinating. Also, sleep is such and overlooked topic, it blows my mind that the society takes things like night shifts, all-night parties and abuse of stimulants so lightly - quite possibly because sheer lack of awareness of the long-term consequences. But who can blame them - up until just recently being sleep deprived was a rare event and the data showing the real dangers of ot is just accumulating. Connecting this to another big topic on your channel - have you heard about time-restriced feeding? Check out Dr. Stachin Panda. Not long ago he was a guest on Found My Fitness podcast (which is also a channel here on YT, which I can highly recommend). I'd like to thank you for these viseos. So far you've covered only the topics which I'm really passionate about myself. I'm glad I found a channel where I can send interested people to - sending actual articles to folks not connected to science (and usually not native english speakers as well) rarely resulted in them reading those, even if they were the ones who asked for them. Even a relatively straightforward podcast can be off-putting to a layperson. And most of the short videos I found were either waaaay oversimplified, sometimes even not correct factually, or just not appealing. Your videos have it all. Keep it up! I'm sure your channel will grow fast.

So how did you get over your sleep anxiety? Now im feeling really anxious about my sleep. I fall asleep ok, but wake up after 4-5 hours and have a difficult time going back to sleep.
@WhatIveLearned
@WhatIveLearned 8 жыл бұрын
Your body is really good at creating habits and associating certain objects and times with patterns of behavior. If you can lay in your bed (and do nothing else -especially not check your phone) at the same time every night (10PM would be good) and wake up at the same time every morning, your brain will quickly associate 10PM and your bed with sleep and you'll fall asleep faster and faster. -I started making sure to get in my bed 10PM every night, and each night I fell asleep quicker and quicker. Started out taking about 25 minutes, now I fall asleep in about 5 minutes. -I screwed up the schedule to get this video done, and then it was hard to fall asleep again. The next day I was saying "Goddamnit, go to sleep, go to sleep." to myself then I stopped and thought: "You've gotten in bed at the right time, all you can do is lay here and all you have to do is lay here at this same time again tomorrow night and it will get easier." Resigning myself to the fact that there was nothing else I could do other than lay there really helped curb that anxiety and before I knew it it was morning.

What I've Learned I am in bed every day at 9. I have no problem falling asleep. I wake up at 3am though and can't fall back to sleep after that. The longer I lay in bed, the more anxious I feel. I've tried meditating, thinking happy thoughts, reading, the only thing that has helped is Benadryl but that is not a long term solution.

I love your videos! so thanks a ton for your hard work. I just wanted to maybe add a tangent on the this subject to look into. Ive been getting into the ancient yogic sciences of the east, there I came across the idea that unless your extremely physically active most of your sleep needs are related to diet. We know roughly how long it takes our bodies to digest certain foods, cooked meat is somewhere around 50 hours(70 something for uncooked) veggies are like 16ish cooked ( or 12 or something raw) and fruits are like 2-3 hours. Now you can see what happens to food when its sits around for that long in a temperature similar to the inside of your body, decay happens, it also happens in your body while you process it. So if you eat a excessive amount of food in general or far to heavy portions of meat you can have up to 2 days of food in you at a time that is basically rotting. rot is just a large amount of bacterial activity when this happens in your body now a large portion of your bodies energy needs to be directed to quelling this bacterial activity especially when your eating heavily everyday consistently causing a constant backup further slowing the process thats gonna make you very TIRED as basically your normal state so normal you forget notion of feeling any different and probably also depend on caffeine and other stimulant to even simply function a entire day without face planting into insta sleep every 20 min. Id be very interested in your opinion and what you find regarding this thought process, because I used to sleep like 9-11 hours a night and be very very addicted to constant caffeine and pretty much any other stimulant i could get my hands on, because i would actually feel fully functional for once, and my diet was basically straight processed garbage. I made a radical diet change while not completely cutting out meat( never imagined id ever even try because i thought i loved it sooooooo much) heavily reducing it and eating lots more veggies and fruits with lots of peanut butter as my main source of fat and protein. even so it was still a half assed attempted at the diet I was trying, and all of a sudden after a couple days clearing my system and adjusting all of a sudden my natural wake time( no alarm) happened after 5-7 hours usually 6, and I pop out of bed going to full alert awake mode after like 5-10 min instead of being in full zombie mode for like 1-2 hours after waking like i used to be. And even more amazing I just decieded to quite caffiene and stimulants( like adderall) and just tossed them like it was no big deal. This is not some little thing for me at all I tried my damnedest to quite caffiene soo many times but found it literally undoable, I would simply be 2 tired and non functional all the time yet this time it was like deciding to wear different shoes cause the old ones hurt, easy peasy. Anyway sorry for rambling, just thought id salivate your curiosity a bit. Thanks again for your great content and the time you put into it, and have a great day!!

Thank you for posting these videos. I tend to binge on information in a disruptive way, and these videos give me a shortcut to positive, applicable conclusions and practical solutions. I'm less inclined to mistake the discovery for the application when I find them this way as well, which means implementing what I'm learning also becomes easier. I really think you're doing a great service. It may sound like a cop-put, but I'm unable to contribute to your patreon right now. Someday!

It is my experience that sleep will return your mind/body to homeostatic equilibrium (ie. "conditioning defaults" as I sometimes call it), so for those fellas addicted to something (so the mind is conditioned to frequent substance abuse), sleeping will actually make their urges harder to tolerate, as they try to push to change this equilibrium.

This makes so much sense, after getting a new job I was hardly getting sleep and always tired. I maintained my weight loss for years before getting this job. But then I was slowly gaining and couldn't figure out why. Even when I changed my diet and exercised. The weight didn't really wanna budge. It did a little but hardly. i thought my body just randomly slowed it's metabolic rate but I guess it was my little sleep. I also noticed I was gaining fat in places (mid section) that I usually didn't gain in. I've started eating more healthier and exercising again (stopped after being discouraged) and also have made it a point to get more sleep cause I hate being tired. I hope I'll see major changes this time and lose the mid section fat that I didn't have before.

As far as I know, there's going to be ill effects from working the night shift no matter what you do. But aside from living an otherwise healthy life, it's important to make the best of the sleep you get. Don't sleep with alcohol or caffeine in your body. Sleep in a very dark room. Get sufficient light while you are awake. And from personal experience, I got a handle on insomnia with meditation.
