The true reason Slither Wing evolved into Volcarona is because it wanted to trade out its 4x weakness for ANOTHER 4x weakness that happened to give it an excuse to wear boots. It did not account for the fact that its legs and feet would undergo *severe* shrinkage, however.

Since I’m buzzed I can totally nerd out on this since I love evolution as a topic but what I love about the past Pokémon is that they show just like real life animals had to change to survive, given slithers size and power and the heat that built up in it, I can assume it needed lots of energy to utilize the heat outward in terms of combat, so over time when things changed in the Pokémon world which I can assume was similar to our ancient creatures changing, that implies that there wasn’t enough energy in the world or food for slither to consume meaning it needed to adapt to eating less resulting in basically it having to metamorphosize to adapt, so slither wings started laying eggs or birthing smaller forms due to limited energy like Larvesta so that larvesta can conserve energy to become a volcarona which would come close to slither wings true appearance but more adapted to the current world so instead of utilitizing that energy to push out in form of physical power it preserved it and made it so hot into fire that made this “new” being into a bug/fire type, it could’ve also done this when the concept of larvesta (a weakened form of slither wings) was forming as well resulting in what is now volcarona. Think of it like a percentage whereas slither was the 100% complete, it needed to get a smaller form to survive so larvesta is like 20%, and then when it hot enough energy + adaptation it went up to 80% completion which is what volcarona is, and volcarona can never theoretically go back to being slither becuz of the difference in environment and amount of energy avaliable I assume is what is at play

i like to think within time,the species' wings spread out,allowing flight but also releasing the pent up heat trapped within if that makes sense. Since i imagine fighting types to be similar to fire types in terms of heat,morseo its infused into them if that makes sense. buttt slither wing is a paradox so that wouldnt rlly happen but if it wasnt i think that would be the reason

Personally its fighting type never made sense to me... should have been a dragon, it possesses no "fighting" capabilities like Heracross or FoolsGold!Scizor. Heres my theory, overtime due to land predators like Kleavor or Ancient Mothim (i made a concept) It had to find a way to flee the ground but still have power to fight back. Utilising Protosynthesis it used the suns beams to power itself up and used its wings not to make itself be bigger but for flight. By utilising this it became a Fire Special Attacker instead mimicking the oh so powerful Sun to fear it's predators instead of looking draconic.
