I don't understand why there are such long lines outside polling stations in the US. I live in Canada, I can't remember EVER lining up to vote, and I have never missed the chance to cast my ballot in my 60+ years. We get cards in the mail telling us where our closest polling station is (usually a school gymnasium), we show up, get directed to one of about a dozen "sub-stations", go to the table, present our voting card, get our ballot, get crossed off the list, and finally go to one of the two or three "polling booths" (a cardboard box on a desk) where we can mark our ballot in private. We then pass it back to one of the people at the desk and watch them put it in the ballot box. There are also usually a couple of people from the various political parties walking around and monitoring the process, making sure that everything is being done correctly. A couple of times recently, my ballot has been scanned electronically before getting dumped in the box. You are in and out of the building in 5 minutes, 10 minutes tops. Admittedly, its a very simple ballot. You only have to mark your "X" beside one name on a usually short list, and there are no 'propositions' to vote on. 30 seconds to get your ballot, go the 'booth' 10 feet away, find the name you want, mark your 'X' and you are done. Also, employers are required to make sure that all employees have a (4 hour?) window so that they can do their voting. Which for most of us means leaving work an hour or two early and voting on the way home. And yet, it seems that during every US election, there are news reports of long lines at voting stations, of people standing in line for hours, polling stations having to stay open past the deadline just to get everyone in, polling stations running out of ballots, etc., etc., etc. It sometimes seems infuriatingly difficult to vote. No wonder more and more people choose to vote via alternative means - mail-in ballot, voting early (we call them 'advance polls' up here), etc. - which I took advantage of a couple of times during the pandemic here.

Australia does national elections the best, even better than the United Kingdom. For starters, voting is compulsory, so the vote is not monopolised by more enthusiastic sections of society. Pre-polling is widely available 6 days a week, 2 weeks before election day. Every suburb and town will have at least one pre-poll station location. The election day is always on a Saturday, as having the election day during the week when everyone is working is truly idiotic. On the election day Saturday every suburb and town will have multiple voting locations, so the queuing wait times are always next to zero. Postal voting is readily available, with those pre-registered automatically receiving their ballot papers as soon as the election is announced for all elections. The most important aspect to the election process is that the federal elections are solely administered by the federal Australian Election Commission, so all proceedings are conducted to a consistent and uniform federal standard. The end result is that the Australian federal election to decide the members of parliament and Prime Minister is *never* in doubt. Australians are truly appalled with how Americans conduct their presidential elections. It appears as though they are run by 5 year olds, voting for the kindergarten class captain.

As long as I can remember Oregon has had mail in ballots. It’s not even optional it’s just the default and when we vote our options are we can either mail it in or drop it off at one of any number of ballot drop boxes in each of our counties. The only issue I have seen with our system was if in this past election and it was that the ballot drop box in my towns city hall parking lot got full so I had to come back an hour later. Mail in ballots are a great option if your goal is to drive voter participation, because it removes most of the barriers that prevent working people from participating.

Echo chambers. If you live in areas that are predominantly one political party, it is _very_ west to convince yourself that a lot more people think the same as you than there really are. This is a lot easier in rural areas and smaller towns. That, and gerrymandering makes it incredibly easy to hide opposition. For example, there are surprisingly large swathes of Democratic voters in Texas. Yet due to "winner take all" representation and a lot more "land" looking Republican, it's very easy to believe that the entire state is deep red. It's not as easy to do so with Democratic areas due to high population centers tending towards blue. For example, looking at a map, only a small fraction of Illinois' area votes blue, while like 80% of the map is red. What people neglect is that 20% contains like 80% of the state's population, thus making it very easy to dismiss it as just "Chicago choosing for the majority".

As a Brazilian, seeing this gives me multiple feelings. The USA system is archaic slow and chaotic to me. You guys should have an unified voting system, controlled by a strong and independent legal institution, like its here in Brazil. Here they tried to start these fraud acusations, but our eletronic voting system is so easily auditable, and so transparent, that this discourse has litteraly no force in congress. You can litteraly check all the votes of any session in the country by your cellphone. But I know that changing it now would actually give more firewood for the election deniers. But cmon, it should be better. In other hands, there are some things like the early voting that is very nice and enables more people to vote, and we dont have this here in Brazil. At the same time, we have only 20% of abstentions, while you guys have 34%, so its questionable how much this is helping. More should be done so more people go vote.
