hahaha! i came here from google looking for pictures of shockwaves around aircraft. when i saw the thumbnail on this video with such a question, first thing that came into my mind in 2 seconds was the area rule. i was damn right, now i am happy and feel good about myself.😂

Your statement is not 100% right. Commercial aircraft tend to fly at High Subsonic Speed. Entering the transonic area means Buffeting, Vibrations, antieconomical flight etc.

Your explanation says area rule reduces drag. It does, but you give no explanation of how it reduces drag in the transonic range.

The interference drag is reduced as the components have a smoother shape at the intersections.
