For those who want an RPG that has: a party system, turn based combat, a fantastic story and all the other goodies that came with the older Final Fantasy games yet were designed for modern consoles you need to try "The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel". Although there are technically 4 games in the Cold Steel series and they are sequels to some older games it is actually completely doable to start at Cold Steel 1 without having played the older ones as 99% of the backstory will be explained if you pay attention. I should also mention that I and many others consider Cold Steel 1&2 to be a single game divided into two parts with 3&4 also being a single game in two parts. As one last note the final game of the entire arc called Trails into Reverie is coming out at the beginning of July 2023 and I absolutely cannot wait.

Honestly, FFX was really the last true turn based FF game (in my memory of the series anyway). Not counting the MMOs of 11 and 14 (as an MMO simply has a different baseline of considerations from a single player game), Final Fantasy has been slowly evolving such that FFXVI feels like the end of a metamorphosis rather than any kind of sudden shift. 12 still had an active time bar (I think, it's been a while), but the action didn't stop (or maybe it did) and they had the gambit system so that you could focus on only controlling one character and you set the parameters for how the AI handles the others. 13 had less micromanagement with the paradigm system defining everyone's roles in a particular setup, and leaned again more towards the action; you had classic spells and such, but it was still largely non-pause and there was an emphasis on causing a "Break" to get in big damage. 15 further pushed it with less menu usage and more on-the-fly decisions with the combat, with the AI party largely being it's own thing while you controlled Noctis alone. And now with 16, it's about Clive and action. It's been a shift in philosophy over several games, such that from a gameplay perspective, Final Fantasy no longer means what it did 10-15 years ago. Personally, having started with 7, I kinda miss the hybridization of magic in tech in a society, as I've never been that big a fan of "high fantasy", so I'm curious if 16 will define the baseline for a few games to come, or if the FF brand will continue to evolve with every game. Personally, I miss the "old school" of Final Fantasy some. I loved FFX and how they made turn order so transparent that you know exactly who was going when coming up so you knew you could afford to delay with a character because your healer will go before the enemy and can see how your actions will affect the turn order in advance. I enjoyed the larger party dynamics that occasionally allowed scenes to play out a bit different, as who's in your party at the time may react to the scene, and the others in it, differently, so playing the game again with different party compositions could actually shed new character insights. The more single character focus keeps the "important" case comparatively smaller, which isn't bad, but I kind of like the wider cast of varied characters a party system allowed. Oh yeah, the whole "Nova Chrystalis Project" or whatever it was.

It took a while to click for but FF16 absolutely has the sould of a Final Fantasy game It's semi-open linearish structure really ech that of the old, pixel final fantasy games. The going town to town (where each town has its own theme musically and from a story perspectiv) kinda dealing with people's problems really struck me as Old School Final Fantasy. Dungeons that are kinda themed arpynd the Crystals felt VERY old school FF to me as well as the different boss and mini bosses. The kind of incremental gear upgrades to make as you progress too Its easy to look at the combat and the removal of a lot of RPG Elements and think that its not Final Fantasy anymore but if you look beyond that and look at the big picture, you can absolutely see the spirit of the series intact. I was shocked at how much coser it felt to Retro FF than modern FF on a lot of fronts

FF16 is a good story driven action game with amazing visual presentation. But having played most FF titles it was quite a departure from the genre. I wished they did add some of the core rpg elements of the series. Fighting fire bombs with fire element felt weird, Marlboro losing it's trademark status maladies... feels like the recurring mob were just placed there for nostalgia and lost their identities. The game is literally centered on Eikons representing elements yet it lacks any strength/weakness elemental synergies. The action combat is good but could have used a little rpg stuff here and there rather than just figuring which combination chains better. Not a fan of QTE's but I get they're there for the cinematic presentation. Great game for players not familiar with the series still.

I thought the same last night - faught the Bombs for the 1st time last night and thought "I only have Fire and Wind magic at least Jill has ice magic." But makes no difference you can just user Fire attacks/skills against them which did feel a bit odd and a shame the different elements strength/weeknesses weren't included. I supppose it's so the Eikons can just be used as more of a "Nuclear deterrent" for story purposes so 1 isn't more powerful vs others? Though (slight spoiler alert) Bahamut vs Odin (Light vs Dark) was a pretty cool battle.

There's a few reasons why people aren't playing this game. The fact that it's still a Sony exclusive is part of it (budget and platform constraints). Nearly £500 to play one game if you don't own a PS5 already is not good. As much as Square are saying that they are taking into account their severely limited install base, I don't think they actually are. I think they believe that this game will be a console seller on its own, when, if any previous game didn't get you to sink over £400 on a console, this game probably isn't going to change that. Also of note, there's a fairly reasonable part of the fandom who aren't into the huge lean into action. So Devil May Final Fantasy is not going to appeal to those people either. I like Devil May Cry. I've played a lot of it. Personally, I don't want it in my Final Fantasy. As has been said by other people already, this game is largely made with people who aren't already fans in mind. If you really like your gritty action games, by all means, go for it. If you don't, there's other games out for you. They're just maybe not Final Fantasy titles. Or even Square titles. I'm not sure they're even bothered that they're potentially chasing away fans (in fact, I think they've specifically said as such).

True, but the side quests are very well done in this game. They aren’t always super rewarding. But they, usually, aren’t super lengthy and are typically kept around the area you’re already exploring. And the main reward is you are getting a TON of world building from them. There are many things that I’ve learned about the world just from dialogue coming from throwaway characters during side quests. My problem with it is that it's not a very good "game". There's far too many cutscenes and it's not just volume, it's how how they are used. You watch a 3 minute cutscene, walk 10 seconds down a hallway, and then trigger another 3 minut cutscene. You walk a little bit ahead and, for whatever reason, a cutscene needs to initiate combat. And then when that ends there's another cutscene. God help you if you're doing the side content because just going straight through the main scenario means you'll spend as much time NOT interacting with the game as you do interacting with it. What makes it worse is that a lot of it feels like filler, with overly long goodbyes and unnecessary dialog (does Clive really need to shout his brother's name as much as he does during a certain sequence and do we need to keep stopping every few seconds for a cutscene as he does it?). The combat system isn't great either honestly as swapping a resource pool like Mana for cooldowns makes me feel like I'm playing an MMO, especially given how easy 99% of the enemies are. When I got the ability to block and wanted to try it out I literally stood in front of enemies for seconds waiting for an attack while they danced around me doing absoloutly nothing for seconds at a time. It's wonder the combat feels so underwhelming, the enemies don't really pose a threat and without a resource pool to manage you can't even pretend like there's trategy involved. You just mash whatever button or slap them with whatever OP cooldown you want. There are some bosses that challenge you but only because they hit like a truck, not because they require any real strategy beyond avoiding the easily avoidable light bullet-hell type attacks. The Eikon fights should be cooler than they are but for me they are just annoting because there's just so many particle effects all the time it's really hard to see what's going on at times. I know I just did something cool but I can barely see what it was. This would be an OK action game but it's a really poor RPG which brings me to my issues with this being a Final Fantasy game. It's not that I think the franchise can't evolve beyond the genre it's most known for (they have an awsome rhythm game for instance) but for a mainline FF game this doesn't feel good. I miss having a party. I miss the in-depth character development you used to get from each member of your party. I miss having some actual agecny in how I played (I'm beyond tired of the swing-magic burst combo that you must repetetively do between cooldowns). There's so many, for me, useless abilities that you're forced to have; all of those Eikon abilities you cant switch like Garuda's grab. Why can't I swap that button for something I personally find more useful? I know what it does to larger enemies but why even design the combat like that? You're basically forcing me to use an ability during every encounter because it's borderline dumb not to. Oh, and they made me kill a chocobo. Unforgivable.

I'm a huge fan of the Final Fantasy franchise. 10 and 4 are among my favorites, I do prefer the turn-based combat but that being said the demo for this game absolutely blew my socks off and I think the action combat works perfectly for the setting and graphical enhancements. I will admit, it is a little immersion breaking to have turn-based combat in a game with realistic visuals. I understand the shift to action in order to appeal to a more modern audience. I actually think this game has strong Game of the Year potential. I don't like that other Final Fantasy fans are gatekeeping the franchise behind combat systems. That's pretty disgusting and I don't recognize those people as a fellow fan if they do that. It is possible to like both the new and old. Last thing we need is this turning into another Star Wars situation. That's how toxic fandoms are created

As a massive final fantasy fan, I really don't care about the action-based combat. It looks fun. The problem I have with this game based off previews and some reviews is the side quest look absolutely horrible. The lack of party is disappointing. One of the key parts of almost every final fantasy is the bond you have with your party members and the story that it tells and it feels like that's lacking a little bit. This game feels more like a perfect example of style over substance which is fine, but it's not what I look for in final fantasy. The itemization system looks terrible. There's very little RPG elements. I haven't played it myself so I'll leave that to judge. But it looks like if Michael Bay and the creators of game of thrones made a video game.

The one with blitzball? (or one of the ones with blitzball anyway) That was awful, or at least it was awful after you get to the blitzball bit, I was enjoying it prior to that. I quit when I got to that bit, ridiculously easy and no fun to boot. Without the blitzball, it might have been my second favourite, with the blitzball it doesn't even make my top 10.

From my point of view... FF16 seems like it is something made as a necessity. They needed to inject "Final Fantasy" with new blood and new sources of funds for future amd current projects... it is not something made out of passion. FF7R is the passion project and the hope of both the developers and the fans. But it is also taking a bit long that it, maybe, funds aren't flowwing as freely as before. It is hard to talk about this. But for me... FF16 isn't a main-line game. It was almost there, but it was lacking. It almost frels like a side-game much like dirge of cerberus or Revenant ofnthe Wings or even VAGRANT STORY. I would have accepted it more as if it wasn't "XVI" I did NOT like ff13 but it still feels like an FF game, and FF14 feels like a main-line game because of the story... (i never got to play 11 so I cant say anything about that) But 16 feels a bit lacking..? Bit different... Speaking of which... was there any "Fantasy Technology" in FF16... I don't think I've noticed any... since I've been dodging spoilers. There isn't any Magitech, Airship-tech, Steampunk andnthe rest right? Is Crystal-Tech a thing here?

So I've played every final fantasy game except 8, 11, and 13. To me, final fantasy is about a great story and the moments that just amaze you. It's about the magic system and bestiary. It's also about innovation. For those who played Final Fantasy 1, you were playing a D&D campaign a few different enemies in the bestiary. From then on, they kept innovating, and without that, no one would have their beloved atb system. Final Fantasy wouldn't be where it is today without innovation, and if they don't keep innovating, the franchise will die.

Sorry to say but this is a betrayal of final fantasy and what the franchise has been, the whole combat system is a mix of a weak RPG element (buy a weapon, use it buy a stronger weapon, use it etc no ultimate weapons or ability to upgrade it that far) and DMC in fact if you removed the final fantasy assets (names, the summons or at least their elemental types) and you’ve literally got DMC. There’s zero magic options like previous your stuck casting a single spell that is dependant on the Eikon you have active which is also pointless as enemies don’t have elemental weaknesses, there’s no support magic, no curative magic, potion space is limited unlike the 99 you could previously carry, EVERY side quest I’ve come across so far is travel to a location kill an enemy by button mashing and sometimes collect an item that’s it! No ability to control an Eikon at will these are reserved for specific stages and usually involve a cutscene QTE. Story is fairly engaging but is far too medieval for final fantasy. If you removed the final fantasy name from the cover and named the eikons differently then you would have a generic mid level RPG completely unassociated with the final fantasy “identity” sad really but this is no final fantasy other than in name

So when Final Fantasy XV was announced to have real-time combat in it, I jumped on that boy *IMMEDIATELY.* And, maaaaan... did I have a blast with that game! Almost restarted it on Xbox yesterday, but decided to play Strangers Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin first, since I haven't played it yet. I'll knock out Final Fantasy Type-0 afterwards. Then I'll replay Final Fantasy XV. After that, I will get to Final Fantasy 16 on PS5 sometime next year, when I can get it for $34.00 or less. And with Final Fantasy 16 *finally ditching the shackles* of turn-based combat mechanics completely, I am sure that this will be an extremely good game!
