Even today after years of working I still bristle when I hear that old rejoinder "that's how we always did it". Always be open to new ideas!

Amen, Mike!! I can't stand when someone says "that's not the way I was taught or told." I ask after that if they ever learned how to read?

Change is scary to a lot of people. This is definitely great advice, and reminds me of the ongoing Wire Nut vs Wago debate here in the US.

Oh my gosh.... Wire Nut versus Wago! Oh boy I need to do a video on that one. Thanks for the idea!

In Europe they wall wire nuts 'fire nuts.'
@electvolt673 ай бұрын
@@MikeHoltNEC they should....do you know, every American electrician that uses Wagos says that everyone in Europe uses them and it hasn't burned down yet....I don't agree with your backstabbing advice either. I've done tons of service work...over 45 years and I've done all the emergency service calls for my companies. Backstabbing and Wagos are the biggest service calls since aluminum wiring in the 60s. Once you apply a heavy load to them....they burn up. I do love everything else you do though!!!

@@electvolt67Years ago, backstabbing was permitted on switches and receptacles with 12 AWG wire (heavy load). This was changed a while back to only allow it for 14 AWG (15A circuits) because of the issues you describe. But there are no issues with backstabbing 14 AWG on 15A dwelling circuits today. I know... that information doesnt matter... From AI "Wago connectors have been used in Europe since the 1950s and are known for their reliability and ability to create a secure electrical connection. Wago connectors are also maintenance free when properly contained." I know this information doesn't matter my Brother.

@@MikeHoltNEC One of the biggest reasons is LED lighting lowered a 15amp load quite a bit. Also, Europe is on 220v so the amperage is lower. But under a heavier load....say 6-10amp continuous, backstabbing will fail over time. I'm still doing calls for them. I've had a few Wago induced calls but it's early yet. Problem is, how much time do I have left...lol. Thanks for all you do, Mike. I took a course of yours years ago in NYC on grounding. I've never learned so much in such a short amount of time. Changed my attitude on learning in this trade and I've never stopped. Loved your NEV stuff.

This attitude is why I respect you so much. Its easy to get stuck in your ways if you do not actively keep yourself updated with the latest and greatest knowledge of your trade. I have learned a ton from you myself and preach everything you state. Keep up the great work.

Excellent analogy, unfortunately we have the exact same problem in medicine, doctors are stuck to the old protocols and theories just as much as electricians. Thanks for sharing 🙏

Your response is very humble. You should know that, the internet is a brutal toxic place right now. They made it that way. People cant just edify each other and sharpen one and other without being insanely rude. Cant go wrong with your attitude Mike. Thanks. God bless.

This video is relatable to so many different scenarios in life. great video. I think it’s also time for older men to stop talking and also listen to what the younger men have to say at times. Alot of older guys who don’t like to be correct even though they’re wrong.

Love the analogy! You are right on, sometimes I grin and bear it cuz arguing wastes time and time is money! If it doesn’t hurt anything to do alittle extra unnecessary idioms for appease purposes keeps the ball rolling Mr. Holt. How about your thoughts on a ball gap for a light pole? 😂

Grounding electrode subsystem. Part of LPS. Forget penetrox, and noalox, that would be taking preventative measure to an extreme! 😂 stupid really

Yes Don’t throw away the instructions they actually might have an update that we don’t see or just because we’ve done it so long one way there may be something we don’t know in the newest product update I work with my guys all the time and ask them read the instructions please, its just 5 more mins and may prevent a mishap and the necessity for another fixture

absolutely. inspectors are a law unto themselves, it seems. we got one who insists on bonding pull boxes (to ground). This is on PV feeders (inverter to accumulation panel).
