WHY SOME RESTAURANTS ARE LOUD

Standardized methods to measure restaurant noise are in development, but the latest data from a popular sound-reading app suggest noise is plateauing at lower than pre-pandemic levels. Some acousticians believe we simply became used to quieter surroundings during the pandemic, which could make us more aware of loud environments.
Experts are advocating for standards that would not only alleviate customer complaints, but also protect the health of patrons and staff members. And with the number of people dining out slightly declining after a pandemic rebound, restaurateurs should have more motivation to try new technologies and materials to suppress noise and lure more diners to their tables.

As someone who has hearing sensitivity from hearing damage I've had as a kid, really loud restaurants and bars are the bane of my existence. It's honestly insane how loud some places will play their music to the point I have to yell to my family to hear each other. I have to wear earplugs to be able to have an enjoyable time in certain restaurants to cut out the loud music.

In the 90’s it became a trend in restaurants to strip the ceiling revealing the hvac and the like. This made the volume increase. It was thought to make people think the place was really popular while at the same a little uncomfortable so you would come, but not stay too long.

That's why a lot of restaurants have carpets and wall hangings. Both absorb sound instead of bouncing them, which reduces the sound level. If you ever go to a place without carpet, it'll probably be pretty loud, though wall hangings might help with that. The acoustic panels are more recent and more effective than wall hangings. Sound science plays a large part in restaurant design.
@BankruptMonkey
@BankruptMonkey 21 күн бұрын
Carpets are also good for restaurants because patrons often drop glass dishes which can cause dangerous shards, the carpet reduces risk. Also individual carpet tiles are cheaper to replace than hardwood planks.
@Shinyarc
@Shinyarc 20 күн бұрын
@@BankruptMonkeycarpets harder to clean in those instances, though: as they say in Seinfeld, a glass shard in carpet can be hidden for years until one day it kills you (hyperbolic, sure, but based in reality). ADHD and loud restuants just don't mix. I get super overstimulated quickly in these environments if i'm trying to have a conversation. I relate so hard to this. I have ADHD and don't always take medication, but if I'm without and in a loud / public place, I get so stressed and lose focus on my talking partner! I luckily don't have a significant other though, which is for the best, as many of my traits make me a terrible partner, in addition to my memory being close to non-existent after a traffic accident, in addition to face blindness, which the ADHD doesn't help at all. Have a great day / weekend! ❤️🤍💙🇳🇴
@arterca
@arterca 19 күн бұрын
@@viktorbirkeland6520 that's really tough, viktor! I've had a lot of stress on my relationship with my partner because of my ADHD. When I'm medicated it is better but it's a lot of self work to really make things the best they can be. It's taken a lot of time for her to learn about and understand that I'm not doing it to hurt her and also I am constantly working towards being better and open about it. When I don't recognize she is talking to me while I'm reading an article or something she can get really frustrated. it used to be a huge pain point in our relationship. Now she recognizes that she has to be patient and wait for me and that if she interrupts I don't mean to be distracted but I started the task and my brain really wants me to finish it before moving to something else. There are plenty of other examples of ADHD really getting in the way of a relationship but it's something we can work around and work on. Open communication is really the thing that worked best for me. Most people don't know what the heck ADHD actually is and how it affects us (including us with ADHD). They don't know about the quirks it causes or that we aren't just hyper or can't pay attention. I struggle with memory as well. Generally I have it stored but just can't seem to recall it. Movies and TV are big ones. Books I can recall but movies/TV i can't recall a single thing about them until something jogs my memory. We'll start a new season or watch a sequel and my partner will ask "do you remember what happened in the last season/movie?" "Nope. [*Monkey playing tambourine in head*]" "Oh well this, this and-" "oh! Now I remember. This and that also happened and this is where we are now in the story." I used to be really good with that kind of stuff but it's gotten worse. I can't imagine living with face blindness. That's really hard for people to wrap their heads around (myself as well in a way). To not be able to record faces to a person in our brains just doesn't seem possible and yet you are living proof of it. It's another one of those invisible things people think people make up and I'm sure it can feel hurtful.

It really does play a large factor! So does color - you’ll notice that reds and warm colors tend to be used a lot, as they incite feelings of passion and hunger, whereas blues and cooler tones tend to create calm relaxing environments that aren’t conducive to eating. That’s right, sales can drastically vary based on sound dampening wall hangings and paint color!

Often bartenders or managers will attempt to use music volume to try to drown out or give a sense of ambiance.That only serves to turn up the volume, make communicating harder, and cause a feedback loop that quickly kills a night. I ran a weekly happy hour for years. I found even in completely open dance space, music volume was the best determiner of overall volume. Keeping music at a modest level encourages patrons to speak at a volume where when conversation paused they then could hear the music clearly.

So I tried it in my school’s lunch room, and it averaged over 100 decibels, which is enough to cause damage over time. I think my school should see this video.

But the reason a lot of bars and restuarants have loud music is for 1 key reason, people tend to drink more when there is louder music cause they associate the music with atmosphere, energy and nights out at more active venues so they are motivated to drink. If a restaurant or more often a bar has loud music its because they likely are trying to cause this. Obviously this technique doesnt work for all restaurants, family spots and fine dinning would probably benefit from the designs you suggest but trendy/ casual restaurants with more energetic service and atmosphere want the noise.

Hahahaha. 🤣 I’m sitting there going “Why is he using a laptop to explain the sounds stuff when he has the bulletin board?” … and then he didn’t disappoint! Comedy is all about timing.

Ever notice that making a restaurant mildly uncomfortable helps increase turnover rate on tables, making the business more profitable. Loud noises help keep people slightly uncomfortable, too much noise drives people away. Red lights make people mildly uncomfortable. Day light helps people keep track of time. So on and so forth and all of it is manipulated to increase or decrease your time at a place.

Noise is actually a factor that can add to revenues and profits. It depends on the restaurant or other venue. Some benefit more from less noise. Some benefit more from more noise.

Former restaurant dude here. Never assume that the sound level in an eatery, or even a sports venue, is unintentional and purely natural.

I’ve been to a restaurant that was so loud, it was actually deafening. No music, just terrible acoustics. You had to scream to hear anything 😂

SOOOOOO true omg- I'm neurodivergent and I HATE places with loud environments, and more specifically, LOUD CONVERSATIONS OVERLAPPING 😭 Like my brain tries to pick apart every convo at once- and not even the one I'm involved in- and it makes me wanna go deaf 😭 THANK YOU SO MUCH for explaining why some restaurants have me on the verge of crying but others are totally fine lol

I like it when it's loud. It adds to a lively atmosphere and gives you an out in case of an awkward silence. There is no silence. This is why I like food courts.

The absolute loudest restaurant I've ever been to was a P.F. Chang's in Birmingham Alabama. It was so loud we packed up our food after a few minutes and ate in our hotel.

I worked at a restaurant that had poor acoustics. The job was fatiguing just because of the noise pollution. I eventually quit that job and they couldn’t understand why because they kept begging me to be a manager. I can’t tolerate sitting inside an echo chamber for several hours. I don’t know how people do it, the acoustics were unbelievably shitty. people would sit inside and just chitchat and I literally could not comprehend how that’s possible but they did it all the damn time

Some restaurants used sound machines playing restaurant noise during the quieter part of 2021 when not as many people were eating out.

I fear that some restaurants may opt for the loudness so the restaurant appears more busy and liked.

To celebrate my sister’s graduation this spring, we went to a fancy restaurant my family (myself included) used to adore for dinner. When we sat down, I basically went nonverbal from all of the sound in the restaurant, and didn’t know why it happened now but didn’t in the past. Later that night, my mom was pulling out scrapbooks to get ready to transfer pictures from graduation into. Low and behold, the restaurant HAD carpeting ten years ago, but replaced it with wood/vinyl this time. I love the food there, but I might have to eat there at 4:00 instead of 7:00 to actually hold a conversation 🫠
