I had similar condtion as Matt Gourley, and my aunt who was an expert doctor, asked me to change my shoes. I started using comfortable shoes and the condition was fixed. The problem was with my nerves in the foot were getting pressed all day while I wore the shoes and at night the nerves started relaxing with pulses. The solutions is worth trying.

For me the cause was slipped discs. Basically the discs if they're slipped/bulging can limit/block blood flow to your legs, leading to that pins-and-needles feeling similar to when your legs are falling asleep. My solution was just to fix my posture and stay away from lifting/moving heavy objects. Usually I'd know if my back was getting out-of-whack merely by my RLS acting up and I knew I was doing something to aggravate it.

@StormgateNexus3 ай бұрын
I'm not a medical doctor, but I've had this exact symptom before (among other nerve-related discomforts) that you have Matt. The pins and needles may be caused by tightness in low back, usually from excessive sitting and poor posture, which can cause pressure on the nerves innervating to the spine. It could be related to a spine disc too (these can wear out with age), but a neurologist may have already given you an EMG, and found nothing, which might suggest muscle tightness instead. There are physical therapy exercises for the low back/hip (e.g., pelvic bridges) and stretches (e.g., pigeon pose) you can do daily to try to ameliorate the symptoms. Magnesium can also help relax muscles if you're experiencing spasms. Certain diets (e.g., Keto) can increase the risk of developing restless leg syndrome, too. Also, an EMG showing nothing doesn't mean something isn't wrong. My mom (mid-50s) had an EMG that showed nothing, despite having peripheral nephropathy symptoms. She had years of trying to get a proper diagnosis, before the issue was pinpointed to C4-C5 in the spine, and surgery relieved her of these symptoms. My EMG also showed nothing, but I have had peripheral nephropathy for 2 years. I used to have restless leg syndrome too, but that went away after maybe 6 months or so. I think from changing from Keto diet, regular PT exercises, and hydration were factors. Also cutting coffee and less alcohol. Best of luck, love the show!

Conan's back nerve issue is called notalgia paresthetica, it's a particular nerve just to the left of center of the spine near the base of the left shoulder blade that often gets impinged in people's backs and causes a phantom itch in that spot -- rolling your back out or getting back massage can often help (straighter posture and avoiding poor lifting posture helps too)

Restless Leg Syndrome can have common physical causes. Mine was connected to my lower back. I've had slipped discs multiple times in my lower back, and whenever I would aggravate my lower back my RLS would act up. Basically had to fix my posture and be careful about moving/lifting heavy things, but I rarely suffer from RLS anymore. You can take medicine for it too.
