What Sonic games need to do from now on, is keep 2D gameplay in 2D games and bring back the 3D free-flowing, trick-based gameplay that SA2 had. I think it worked better for the boost stages in Unleashed because a lot of the 2D sections still took advantage of the fact that Sonic was in a 3D environment. Look at the first 2D sections in Arid Sands and Jungle Joyride to see what I mean. Hitting certain springs, pressing certain buttons would take you to a different route but not an upper or lower route but a route to Sonic’s left or right. Classic Sonic in Generations similarly takes advantage of the 2.5D element of the stage I’m ok with 2D or 2.5D sections as long as they’re not overused

I agreed on pretty much everything here except for your tangent on the character designs at the end. While I agree that they look good in 3D (although I still think keeping the classic designs would have been fine), I can't agree that they should be used for every single game going forward. They were created specifically for 3D, but the old designs were created to specifically look good in 2D, and outdo them in 2D as a result, with sharper, more striking silhouettes. Sonic 3 and Knuckles showed us that a relatively interesting story can still be told using these designs. Add in some dialog and you have yourself a proto-Sonic Adventure, complete with a character arc in the form of Knuckles. In my personal opinion, their designs didn't really need to be updated at all, since that would avoid this split in the fandom ever having developed to begin with. But seeing as it's already happened, at the very least they should keep the 3D designs to the 3D games, and use the classic designs for 2D. Mania does this to great effect, and if you ask me, it's a far more beautiful game for it. Besides that though, excellent review, 10/10 I wish more people like you would speak up like this

The opinion of it being beloved is entirely flipped over its head since 2012/2013 and it hasnt recovered since. The thing about Sonic tho is the problems come from a lot of sources. SEGA for mishandling their games in the past 10 years, IGN and all these reviewers for stapling the series as a franchise without any positives, and the fanbase itself for being tainted in the opinions of all these guys for not knowing what they want. For instance those who want another Adventure game are socially mocked. So the fanbase consensus is that wanting an Adventure game is a bad thing. I think I should give a bit of my thoughts on the game I had over the years. 11 years old was when I finally got to play Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time. That's nearly nine years ago. I had it on the GameCube and played it from start to finish. At the time, I thought the game was just okay. I enjoyed the speed and mech stages fine but I found the hunting levels boring. Over the years, I've noticed a lot of criticism this game seemed to have received from the likes of Somecallmejohnny, Projared, TheRetroReplay, and others and I couldn't help but agree. I do remember liking Sonic Adventure 1 a lot when I first played it then it eventually became a game I disliked for a while then went back to loving it again. It wasn't until about nearly two years ago that I got a copy of the game on Sega Dreamcast. My opinion had changed completely after replaying it. Most of my issues with the game were either very subjective, exclusive to the GameCube version (although that could be because I was playing it on the Wii) or based on first impressions. Sonic 3 used to be my favourite game in the series but honestly, in recent years, I have to give that title to Adventure 1 and 2 respectively. Adventure 2 in particular is one of my favourite 3D platformers. It excels at what Sonic is supposed to be in almost every area. Speed and platforming with a high skill ceiling, memorization to test your skill on keeping your fast paced momentum consistent, and experimenting with Sonic's moveset to see what crazy shit you can do with him in the levels. The mech stages are a lot of fun. Trying to keep your momentum up whilst locking on to enemies and avoiding their attacks is very addictive and feels very rewarding. The treasure hunting stages feel more like hunting stages now as most of the challenge this time around comes from learning the levels rather than completely relying on the radar. Memorizing the piece locations and getting them out of order for extra points is really satisfying and is made even better by the control. Very enjoyable albeit a bit daunting at first. I'll explain more after I finish watching this video.

Honestly, there should be a fully fledged Chao Garden game, where the objective is to get the best Chao possible, but also to collect as many different ones as possible. Add some fun mini games with plenty of player participation, in-game objectives that earn you different items to level up your Chao or things for your Chao to play with. Maybe you can do certain races to collect objects to make a personalised home for your favourite Chao, and a good ring system to buy special Chao(like shiny Chao and two tone Chao from SA2) and exclusive things for your Chao’s home so you have an incentive to participate in as many mini games and races as you can. Maybe a daily quest/interaction you can do to increase a Chao’s affection for you to give you a reason to keep coming back. I think that would be really cool, if done correctly.

About the Sonic Adventure games not being perfect especially as transitions from 2D to 3D, let's not forget that the Mega Drive games weren't perfect either. Sonic 1 had bad pacing and several boring levels, Sonic 2 had bad enemy placement and several game breaking bugs, and Sonic 3 can drag at times not to mention had more offensive automated speed sections than the Adventure games combined. What's worse, 6 seconds of Sonic running with a huge boulder behind him? Or 16 seconds of Sonic skating through the beginning of Ice Cap Zone? I'll let you decide. Oh and to give credit to Sonic Adventure 1, I only came across 1 game breaking glitch and it's not a glitch you could find by accident. Compare that to Sonic 2 where it has three game breaking glitches that you could potentially run into by accident, not to mention vanilla Sonic 3 which had multiple glitches that got you stuck with no way out. So let me get this straight. *Sonic 2 has a few glitches that you can run into by accident and also force you to start from the beginning, same for vanilla Sonic 3* "Eh, Sonic 2 is still one of the best Sonic games, plus Sonic 3&K doesn't have game breaking glitches and you still have a save feature in its vanilla state" *Sonic Adventure has harmless glitches at worst and don't do much to affect the player's enjoyment, plus also has a save feature to prevent starting from scratch* "Uuuggh! One of the wurst games I've ever played, it's so broken and buggy and bad" I think I rest my case.

Your case has been awakened and called to battle once more. The ice cap cutscene is fully automated. No need to engage in the shallow but egregiously required holding down on the stick. It's also placed at the beginning, and so not an out of place drop in challenge like the truck. 2D games are overall more reliable than the 3D ones. There aren't stupid invisible walls that force the player on specific paths when they look like shortcuts. Nor are there the opposite with textured walls with no collision hiding around.
@Ronan347535 жыл бұрын
@@Scroteydada But didn't Angel Island have a section with Eggman's battleship where the player has to hold right while the ship just drops bombs? More reliable? I feel this is mostly subjective. While the 2D games have a more consistent design. Some could argue the 2D games have bottomless pits you won't see until you fall into them. And of course you can't see what's very far ahead, making it a little worry-some at high speeds. And admittedly there's been quite a few instances where I and many others have clipped through the collision in Sonic 2 and Sonic Mania. To be honest I feel the whole 2D vs 3D is a little pointless at this point, because not only are they designed differently, but they aren't the same within their own dimensions. What I mean is, are you talking about Adventure or Forces?
@Scroteydada5 жыл бұрын
@@Ronan34753 Adventure. And 2D and 3D are both Sonic so the core design applies to both. The instant chokes are more persistent in the 3D games. Bottomless pits in the classics are telegraphed by being at the bottom of the stage where the camera stops scrolling. Out running the camera is also a bigger problem in 3D. Visibility can too easily be ruined as geometry doesn't turn transparent.

I have these games in storage back in New York (in LA now), but I have no idea when I'll get to play them again so thanks to your videos i went out and bought some new copies for now. There is so much heart put into these games, Sega is insane to not remake them, which I believe would help benefit the image of the series and franchise on general. Provided they are competently made, of course which I worry about today. Takashi Izuka expresses how special SA1 is to him, so here to hoping that interest revitalizes something beloved by much of the fanbase. When you started mentioning the Chao garden I immediately remembered how crazy in depth it was, especially with the breeding system for better grades. And this was a few years BEFORE Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Sega is ignoring a gold mine now, why the hell there hasn't at least been some Chao garden game or features for this long is beyond me. SA2 ain't my favorite, but jank aside, his honestly feels like the most complete Sonic game in the series, like they accomplished everything they set out to do (Super Sonic doesn't seem planned for this as it was in SA1) they wanted, with loads of extra content that compliment the main gameplay. This game took itself seriously in lore and presentation and they did it proudly. At this point in the series, Sonic WAS trying to be cool, and still managed to hang in there with a new depth and dimension brought to the characters and their individual develpoment. Literally like a shonen anime arc done right. Honestly makes me wonder why there isn't a good anime or manga adaptation of the series that ties things together. Archie was too messy. That's just one the reasons I understand why SA2 is the favorite of many other fans, and this is coming from someone who likes SA1 better and mostly enjoys the Sonic segments of SA2. But yeah anyway....bring back the Chao garden, dammit.

Dude... whenever I hear people defending the Sonic Adventure games against people complaining that they're somehow too hard or poorly-designed, it often echos the likes of things like Crash Bandicoot, Devil May Cry, and yes, even Dark Souls of all things. (Ya gotta "git gud" at Sonic!) This has been happening a lot in recent years, as it seems any game that demands reasonable levels of skill from the player gets dumped on as a broken mess because a lot more mistakes on the player's part are possible. So, yes, in a sense, Sonic is in a similar boat with not just Crash, but Dante and... the chosen undead... in a way. Devil May Cry in particular seems to mirror Sonic in this sort of regard the most, despite not remotely being a series of platformers, but of over-the-top melee-focused combat action games with a light use of ranged weaponry. If you've never played this series, I'd highly recommend it to any Sonic Adventure fan, despite not really playing much like them at first glance. For, you see, these games really pump up the player skill attributes/rewards, have a similarly cocky attitude and protagonist, and even have a nearly-identical ranking system, which even has a micro-version of sorts used throughout in the middle of battles, not unlike the 100-2000 point bonuses in SA2. Honestly, these are the games that Sonic Unleashed's nighttime stages should have emulated, rather than the more methodical, weighty, puzzle-addled, quick-time-even-ridden style of the God of War series. I'd particularly recommend starting with either DMC3, often regarded as the best in the series (as well as being a prequel), or DMC4, as it largely focuses on a new protagonist (with the original three games' protagonist still being playable in about 40% of the game) to give new focus and perspective, while not having to deal with as much history baggage you might expect from a fourth entry. Seriously, give the Devil May Cry series a shot, and you'll definitely find some Sonic Adventure 1+2 DNA embedded in there. I'm telling ya, if we ever get a Sonic Adventure 3, I'd love for there to be some new playable character who plays like a Devil May Cry game! It fits with Sonic more than you might think. (On another note, the Sly Cooper series also goes highly-recommended to anyone who adores the Sonic Adventure games, as they're also 3D platformers filled with exploration, that utilize anthropomorphic animals in relatively-complex stories with fairly-serious tones.)

I think it's simple. Sonic is about learning levels, not just passing them. This is why the ring system works. Getting hit is pretty inconsequential on your first few playthroughs, but as you increasingly warm up to the skill ceiling, that losing one ring feeling is as bad as dying in a hard level in Mario. The ring system is exactly why I dislike Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Adventure 2 and even Rush at times. Instant deaths. Unexpected. Unpredictable. Unnecessarily punishing. Frustrating. They have no place in the Sonic gameplay philosophy. It would be like if enemies could stunlock you as long as you can do to them in DMC. You'd just be alienated, no matter how impressive the skill ceiling is. It would be a stupidly designed journey to get there you'd reject out of self respect.

And they’re also similar in how the games journalism scene keeps giving them shit for having skill based style gameplay that they can’t walk through with zero effort, while also saying they have stupid stories and characters when the story and characters are what people love about Sonic and DMC. Fantastic video. I would actually like to compliment the speed stages more. One thing that you overlooked about the somersault is that it actually helps you with precise platforming. It also speeds up platforming as well. It’s faster than just jumping and Air dashing normally. It isn’t actually as useless as you say it is. Another thing about the Speed gameplay is that if you hit the action button after doing an air dash, you travel more distance in that air dash. Doing that also makes it so it goes in a complete straight line (not been affected by gravity until it’s over).

I played the Dreamcast version of lot when I was younger. There's actually two big differences that always bothered me between that version and the GameCube / PC version. One, the Homing for your jump attack is actually increased in the GameCube version. You would think that's a good thing but it actually ends up pulling you to places you would not want sometimes. It makes jumping and homing a little bit more random where there was increased bit of precision in the Dreamcast version. It only affects a few parts but it was maddening to dye at parts in a different version that I don't have an issue with me old version. And two, the much bigger issue... For some reason Choa in the newer versions just love to swim. In the old version they would swim sometimes but it's way more likely than Chow will, for some reason, jump right into the water in the Chao Garden regardless of how high their swim stat is. This is a major issue because if they are swimming they're not going to do anything cool like playing their instruments, having races with each other, singing, The instances of choas interacting with each other were far higher in the Dreamcast version but in this one you're much more likely to just have four of them chilling in the pool all the time. I have no idea why they decided to do this or if it was even intentional but it always just makes me want to play the Dreamcast version again when I try to play the steam one. It's better than nothing I guess but it still makes me sad.

I recently beat Sonic Adventure 2 and I've come to greatly appreciate the gameplay. I struggled but slowly got better as I played. Initially when I played Final Rush for the Hero Story, I thought it was a slog (because I sucked) but when I went back to the stage after beating it, I breezed through it! I think it's one of my favourites now... However, there is only one thing that I hate in the game. THOSE F*$%ING CHAOS ENEMIES WITH THE ARMS.They always found a way to hit me. I believe now that Adventure 2 deserves the praises it earns with the tight gameplay and great soundtrack. I think Rouge's might be my favourite with the saxophones.

Rooster Teeth (well, two of them at least) did an SA2 Let's Play some years ago and their take on it was essentially: Start of the series: "Only the speed levels are good." Middle of the series, dying constantly in Pyramid Cave: "Actually City Escape's the only good speed level." End of the series: "City Escape and Final Hazard are the only good levels!"

I know this is a joke video but that intro really put me off of this video. I barely made it through. Edit, glad I did though, sorry the post was a bit snarky. Really in depth. I liked it! You actually covered a lot of how I feel in a much better way than I ever could. At the end of the day I still prefer SA1 over SA2, but I'd take SA2 over anything we've gotten since then, with Generations being the closest thing with had to the golden age of Sonic. Thinking about it I probably prefer 1 a bit more since it is as you say, carries a bit of the 90s in it still, and I always preferred the 80's and 90's over the 2000's.

I had sonic adventure 2 battle for the GameCube and I played that shit to death. I loved that game, and my favorite part was the chao garden. I only ran into two glitches that I can remember, playing the game and they weren't game breaking. One was on the first stage with sonic, going around that one corner on foot right after the "snowboarding" in the street part, there was a chance to clip through the stage if you went high enough on the corner ramp. And the other one was with knuckles, climbing on walls would sometimes have odd effects, like the camera vibrating or clipping through walls and falling to your death, but clipping was extremely rare in my experience. It basically only happened if you were exploring like every inch of the game for secret animals. Areas the developers probably didn't expect you to go. This game is still my favorite sonic game because it's one of the few games with a chao garden and it had the best chao garden of them all.

Great video, and something in regards to Sonic's running animation where his arms are behind him: I remember either reading or hearing somewhere that he was supposed to do the classic arm pose like in the 2D games, but his arms glitched and just forced themselves to just hang behind in a ninja-run style. I don't know if that's actually what happened, but if so, I actually like that result since it helps convey just how fast Sonic is going even to the point where they just stuck with it in all subsequent games.

A missed detail about Chaos and Tikal is they're radars function differently. Tikal can't get green indicators at all, while Chaos' radar picks things up at double the radius. This makes Tikal better for quickly combing the level prioritizing the ability to cover ground way easier, while Chaos prioritizes narrowing the search zone dramatically to cut down on needless movements.

I know this comment is old, but I agree. Plus, I haven't really seen real constructive arguments for why SA2 is a "bad game". It's all just either "it's terrible because it is", disingenuous/surface-level arguments, or problems that were created from ports/localization. It's a flawed game, but not fundementally flawed.

@@blackcatdreams2011 SA2 is a great sonic game. Same with the adventure games. The "flaws" can easily be avoided in the game such as the glitches and the graphics, etc. People who joke on adventure games being bad are the same people who still hop on hate bandwagons. The voice acting is not "bad". Your telling me that Ryan Drummond as sonic is worse than rodger craig smith?

Edited all three emeralds don't trigger the radar in SA2 because of the ranking system, if you find an emerald out of order in most cases the game gives you a score of PERFECT (2000) because you found it out of order. the radar not triggering for all three emeralds is why i sometimes get an A instead of a B, its for the better, since the stages aren't that long anyways if you use the hint system. EDIT: also the rader is locked so that you KNOW which Emerald the hint monitors are referring too, if all Emeralds were active the hint system would confuse you, this just shows that the style wasn't ment to be played without the hint monitors

Death Chamber, Meteor Herd and Mad Space: allow me to introduce myself
@SidGameReview4 жыл бұрын
@@AkameGaKillfan777 1.death chamber you can use ALL 9 hints and still get the A rank, the 3rd hint for each emerald will tell you exactly where the Emerald is. There is a map plastered everywhere in the level, and wherever you are on the map, that area will glow. Hint example: Emerald 1 Hint 1: embarrassing place Hint 2: the pyramid core Hint 3: behind the Eggman stone statue Emerald 2: Hint 1:two beautiful women on the flame. Hint 2: in the wall Hint 3: the vertical long path to the blue room Death chamber while not hard, its the longest stage in the game, but i still managed to beat it in under 1 minute. 2.Mad space is definitely the most annoying treasure hunting level in the game, but as long as you remember what omochao says about the hint monitors, you will know whether the Emeralds are on one of the planets, top level or bottom level. 3.Meteor herd is one of my favourite levels actually, and by far the easiest out of the three, most 2nd hints for each Emerald will tell you if its on the ground, in the middle level, or at the top of the ark Example : Hint 1: "Dangerous Liquid" Hint 2: "high place" This means the Emerald is at the top of the arc in a chaos solider. And thats about it. Aside from death chamber which needs luck, and knowing where each Emerald is from the first hint. I believe everybody can beat all the treasure hunting stages in under 1 minute But normally played average time should be between 2 minutes and 2 minutes 30 seconds and not more than 3 minutes. The stages weren't ment to be played without the hint monitors, i dont know why people would rather wonder around aimlessly than use them, you can still get am A rank if you use the hint monitors in all the levels, only thing that differs is how many hints you can use before not being able to get an A Wild canyon (recommended 1 hint per Emerald) Death chamber (you can use ALL 9 hints and still get an A) Hope this helps next time you play SA2 :)

You don't get a 2000 point bonus because you found them out of order, you get a higher point bonus the quicker you find an emerald.

@@anundertalefan3305 what do you mean? 1:02:15 actually, time does indeed still pass even in the chao world, sometimes I forget to get out the kindergarten and when I go to the classroom the chao already learned to do the thing that was in the classroom, but since it takes several minutes for the chao to finish the class, the recommended option is to go though the stages and then come back to the chao world to get your chao back

Is that why Battle got a 6/10 review compared to the 9/10 a year earlier? It all makes sense now... As for why people hate the treasure stages? Security Hall: 5 minutes to find everything, and you need to leave some items and come back for them later if you have bad luck. Fortunately the grade is very forgiving DEATH CHAMBER: cramped, easy to get lost, hints are really confusing, you warp all over the place, and creepy ghosts everywhere. The level is the antithesis of what makes these stages fun. And people remember this instead of the fun in Pumpkin Hill, because they spend like 2x as long here as they do in every previous treasure stage combined And also, RNG. People HATE spending 20 minutes in a musty cavern because they had rotten luck That being said, I think that the stages that don’t “sandwich” you are very fun. All around I like the SA2 philosophy more, because the speed stages have a cleaner identity: go fast, and hang tight. It’s about perfecting the controls, and even though the Spindash is very weak compared to Sa1, the Homing Attack is SO much stronger, and it doesn’t need a target anymore to have good range (the Sa1 Jump Dash feels flat out anemic by comparison). As for the shooting stages, the more dangerous enemies help make the stages feel more “alive”, even when you’re the only thing around not made of metal. You can’t just ignore them if you have plenty of time, because they won’t ignore you, unlike the Kikis in SA1.

As corny and imperfect as the English voices are, I still generally enjoy them and would prefer to stick with them. They're so ingrained into the game's identity for me that listening to any other dub just doesn't feel right to me.

That’s why if they ever remake the adventure games they need to keep the old voice acting in the game or re hire the original voice actors to redo lines... I like Roger and Jason but each of those voice actors represent a different era of sonic, can’t see roger or Jason voicing Sonic in the adventure games... Ryan is that youthful energetic kid Jason it that free spirited teen Roger is the seasoned hero So each voice represents a specific personality of Sonic during those times

36:29 Are those really flaws? I mean , why the fact that RE4 have more focus on action over horror is a flaw ? i can understand the fact that it's sort of sad for the fans of the original trilogy but looking at RE4 as a stand alone title, i can't see the problem with this fact, it's a really well made action game. Also, why the fact that the missions are long is a problem? This game give to the player *A LOT* of chances to save the progress in pretty much every mission of the game , if you are bored you can save you progress and turn off the videogame. Also, why the more limited controls are a flaw ? They are pretty smooth and They fit perfectly with the proposal of the gameplay, personally, i never had a problem with them and i played RE4 *A LOT* of times. I have two things I'd like to see improved in SA2: replace the Somersault with a dedicated rolling ability, activated by pressing the Spindash button while moving. Second, remove about two thirds of the dash pads in the stages, because with the physics, they are basically redundant because of the Spindash and your running speed. Also, there's a mod that fixes the radar. And there's a mod that fixes the textures, and the lighting. And the cutscenes. In fact, most of the visual and gameplay bugs can be fixed using mods.

Sonic Adventure 2 is seriously one of the best Sonic games I've played! Great music, fun levels, challenging ones, introducing of a character who's like the 2nd most popular next to Sonic, and some might disagree, but I like that we go beyond just running from point A to point B. I can understand why the treasure hunting thing might not be the most fun thing, but its different. Sometimes different can be a good thing. It gives characters they're own thing. And I do enjoy being in Tails' robo walker and blowing stuff up. Now I'm not gonna say the game is perfect, nothing is perfect, but its nowhere near a bad game or "Unplayable". You just play it a couple of times and get the hang of it. Though I might be in the minority here when I say: Screw switching to the Japanese voice. I don't care if acting is better, or lines are more fitting, I go English every single time.

The biggest problem with gamers today is they have this sense of entitlement where they feel the game should play the way THEY want it to play. Many casual gamers hate having to learn mechanics and will claim the game is badly designed based on their own incompetence(see Arin Hanson for reference). Also the rise of internet funnymen becoming "critics" popularized being nitpicky. Lets face it, nitpicking is essentially critique blackface. Now everyone thinks they're a critic but lacks the ability to properly analyze anything, in addition to unskilled players unfairly labeling games bad when they don't understand the game or it's mechanics. Love your channel so far.
