@Fang Lazken AKA Ranshi Mephiles did in ONE game what Robotnik couldn't achieve in a FRANCHISE. Let that sink in. Mephiles IS a threat, and I think the reason we haven't seen Mephiles resurface is simply because he's too good at being a villain, he has no qualms killing without gloating, he likes to manipulate but he is willing to go for the quick kill. Eggman wants Sonic dead, but can never achieve it because in reality his robots are inferior to Sonics abilities, and Eggman NEVER learns from past defeats.

Right!? In SA2 Eggman got close to killing Sonic, and Shadow was close to destroying everyone, but both times they failed, either by unforeseen events or by their own change of heart. Mephiles had no change of heart, and he didn't give up. When Silver failed he did it himself. He's far more memorable than any other villain for that alone.

Sonic 06 had a great villain a BEAUTIFUL soundtrack and a story I could enjoy the only things in my opinion that ruin sonic 06 for me is the bugs, the animation, the tedious jobs you have to do in the towns, the fact that silver is slow as hell, that damn ball part in one of silvers missions, the clunky and stiff gameplay, and the fact that all together it was a rushed game. If they truly took their time to flesh everything out make some changes tweak some things and find a way to make the game more enjoyable as the story progressed than I feel like sonic 06 once had the potential to be one of the best modern sonic games to date. If I could have one wish for sonic team its to remake this game from the ground up with the same overall story and much more improved and much more fun kinda like a soft reboot. Cause I would love to see a way better version of sonic 06.

biggest mistake that forces made was not letting infinite take center stage... he should have double crossed Eggman, stole the chaos emeralds and mutated into some monster or became super powerful requiring sonic and the heroes to deal with a MUCH larger threat. Infinite had potential but it was squandered.

Controversial, maybe, but this is actually the *one* , *singular* aspect I will defend about forces: for the first time in *years* since Sonic 3, it is *Eggman* who double crosses the other villain and takes over as the main antagonist. For year up until this point, ever since Sonic 3, if the game featured a secondary antagonist/villain, that antagonist would either betray, overshadow, double cross Eggman and take over as the main antagonist/final boss. Chaos, Shadow, Metal Sonic, Black Doom, Mephiles, Eggman Nega *several times* , Emerl/Gizoid, Dark Gaia, the Babylon genie, that one robot in Gravity, the deadly six. The list goes on. And most these games would more of less follow the same story beats: secondary antagonist gets introduced, they beat Sonic up, they're revealed to be forced or willingly in cahoots with Eggman, rematch with Sonic eventually, they break free from Eggman (Eggman does something optional), turn the tables on him and take over, final boss time. It's been so overdone and been happening for so long that the moment Infinite was introduced I was waiting for these exact story beats, and for the most part they did, that when it was *Eggman* who double crossed and turned on Infinite, I breathed a sigh of relief. Because for the longest Eggman has felt like a secondary antagonist in his own series. He's felt more like a king Dedede than a Bowser, if you like that comparison

Something cool about Sonic ‘06 that I ended up particularly enjoying was the villain(s). The designs were actually pretty good, with Memphis Tennessee and Iblis all showing how those characters were. The final boss being Solaris (?) was actually kinda neat, and I kinda liked the design they went with. The story to the game was good too, and honestly it’d probably be amazing if it actually wasn’t a sonic game.

I’ve always believed that Sonic the Hedgehog should have what I can a “Maypole Character Story”, wherein you introduce your main character in your first installment, establish them, and when introducing other characters and villains they have more interesting stories, development, and interactions. This kinda thing is what I feel the Adventure Era of Sonic got down and what’s made it (in my opinion) the best era of Sonic in terms of characters and writing. Sonic was the protagonist, but his friends all developed in their own ways because of their interactions and relationship with Sonic and the villains all had a specific narrative theme to them. Chaos and Gerald were fueled by their hatred and sorrow, resulting in them wanting to destroy the world. Black Doom intended to destroy Earth while taking advantage of a powerful weapon he could control. That being Shadow who was resurrected with barely any of his memories. Mephilis was a being of pure darkness intent on becoming a god, ruling over all of Time itself. As for Sonics friends, Tails learned to become his own kind of hero based on his time with Sonic. Amy became less dependent upon Sonic and start protecting herself. Shadow found his peace with the trauma of his past, his creation, and would try to help protect the world in his own way (even if he is too edgy to admit that). This is why I feel the later Sonic games have been disappointing narrative wise. They throw out the “Maypole Character Story” idea and instead just have Sonic save the day every time while all his friends just sit on the sidelines not doing much.

Black Knight did a great job of adding more to his character without necessarily having to develop him much more. You get to actually see his philosophical side and his beliefs like life having an end is what makes it great and something going on forever isn’t necessarily a good thing. But it mostly has the effect that you described with the other characters developing because of him like stopping Gawain from killing himself and helping Merlina overcome her grief and fear. One of the reasons it's up in my top 10 Sonic games

Eggman wouldn't do that, he wants to prove he's superior, and completely outmatch Sonic in every way possible (and make him suffer). So a normal surprise kill isn't really how Eggman does things. Honestly at this point, there is no harm in bringing him back. You can even right around the whole erasing the events thing and say that he managed to slip through the cracks of time and travel to another dimension. Now that doesn't mean everyone will remember him from that time, but he remembers them and plot for revenge! I would like him to be a boogey man for Silver, he haunts him in his dreams, and appears like a hallucination kind of Slade was to Robin in Teen Titan's. At this point, there are ways for SEGA and Sonic Team to bring back this character without contradicting 06's ending!

Aside from Dark Gaia, Mephiles was the only villain in the Sonic series to truly make you feel that everything was on the line when dealing with him. I think SEGA should give Mephiles a chance, either allowing their employees or even their fans to remake Sonic 06 to the way it should be, or let Ian Flynn use his early concept for the Shadow Fall arc from the Archie Comics and use it for a new game or in the IDW comics. I mostly agree with you; Mephiles coming back in newer games would affect the quality of his character, but I personally think that he should be reintroduced so a wider population of Sonic fans can see what an ACTUALLY decent Sonic villain is. How could this be accomplished? I think Sonic 06 should be remade (hopefully by a more competent team and without rushed deadlines), thus keeping Mephiles in his "original game" while making the game more relevant to younger people (because I doubt that anyone who didn't already have a copy of 06 would just stumble upon a video like this and go "hey I should go buy a game that's more than a decade old"). I think that Mephiles could still "reappear" in future games, in a sense...Basically, the writers (probably in that 06 remake that I still want) just need to insert some lore about how (after beating 06 or an 06 remake) Mephiles may not have been born, but due to his time-manipulation powers some part of him still exists in the time-space continuum; That, coupled with Time Eater's appearance and theme, would be enough to imply that Time Eater is canonically that leftover part of Mephiles. Hell, if they wanted to take the idea even farther, the writers could maybe even say that Dark Gaia is also a part of Mephiles (though I'm really only saying that based on its coloration and the minions you fight as Were Sonic); If they changed the Phantom Ruby's colors from red to purple, the writers could even possibly get away with saying that Infinite is being influenced to behave like Mephiles (by implying that the Phantom Ruby is also a part of Mephiles), which could then explain why he's a...rather shitty imitation of Mephiles (since he's not Mephiles, but with his thoughts and actions being indirectly influenced by him). I mean...this idea would overwrite a lot of pre-established Sonic lore, but honestly, a lot of the existing Sonic lore is shit anyways and it would create some cohesion between the games...somewhat.

Definitely give it a go! It's maybe not for everyone but it's about as shounen as SA1 and S2, and in a lot of ways it's easily the most narratively ambitious game in the series. A three-way time travelling epic with an emphasis on more dramatic elements, it doesn't fulfil all it's potential that's for sure, but it's about as high brow as the series has gotten. I'd kill for a better shot at what this game was going for.

A lot of people talk crap about overly dark or edgy characters in games, but I like them both ironically and unironically if they are done right. Infinite had so much potential, but in the end he just gets overshadowed, which is exactly the opposite of what you want from a "big bad." Mephiles on the other hand is exactly what I want from a dark/evil character. Good villains have the ability to turn a good game into a great game if given the chance. To that end I'd love to see a return of Mephiles in some form or another after all their more recent failed villains.

I am so happy that Mephiles is getting attention now, and even better, it's been revealed that he's getting into the mobile app "Sonic Forces: Speed Battle" later in October 2022. Also, another thing about Infinite and Mephiles is that Infinite wanted to end literally everything JUST because he was called weak, nothing else. Infinite is a tryhard edgelord, whereas Mephiles came across as someone you couldn't trust at first, and someone you should genuinely fear by the end. He wasn't some emo wannabe villain monologuing about hopelessness and fear, he was a manipulator who's calm and measured mannerisms made him unnerving and even somewhat frightening. And the level of power he obtained by the end of the game made him the single strongest entity that Sonic and his friends ever had to face. Not to mention that in a way, he had succeeded in a way that no other villain has. Sure, Infinite beat Sonic, but he didn't kill him and was so obsessed with making other people feel hopeless that he himself allowed the person who would end up being instrumental in beating him to live and provide the motivation to do so, not to mention sparing Sonic's life like a damn fool. Too bad Sonic 06 was one of the worst Sonic games, because it had the best Sonic Villain.

@@NotaPizzaGRL Honestly, 06 is extremely underrated imo, I didn't see any bugs while playing, and the shit people say they find is normally in places you'd never go into the game, and you need to fucking keep hitting a wall until you can clip it (gamegrumps wall clipping being used as a reason to say the game is bad boils my blood to unreasonable amounts, what the actual fuck, do people really need to make that many stretches to call the game bad, sonic kisses a human that's already enough), very few of the complaints are things you'd normally find throughout the whole game, Mephiles being edgelord probably being one of the stretches people made. Also silver's battle takes the same amount of time to beat as the first boss, why everyone keeps calling it unbalanced

@@-hello6177 Depends on what happened in Silver battles. Really only hated 4 things from 06 personally. 1. Sonic x Elise ship in game... Just... no... gross and weird. Also they over sexualized the heck out of Elise. That outfit is just so very inappropriate and the storyline focused too much on shipping towards the end. 2. Elise levels... the controls became very demanding and hard to handle in Elise levels turning was very wide so you were likely to hit a wall or obstacle often, and the "shield" was difficult to use as it required perfect timing, and was almost impossible to deal with annoying enemies. 3. Boss battles in the Sonic Storylines. Sonic bosses mainly cause the mechanics and controls could be inconsistent at times or the arenas are just badly designed... like the first Silver Boss fight for example. So many objects that just get in the way making it hard to get around or away and the arena is so small on top of being cluttered that getting caught by Silver means you will likely get trapped on the walls of the arena and spam killed, mainly thanks to Sega slapping a weird knockdown animation for being hit rather than I-Frames like in every other Sonic game. 4. Silver level puzzles and general navigation in the game. Personally I hated Silver's levels because the game never helped you figure out puzzles or anything outside of the basics of using Silver. Then the general navigation system of the game was annoying when you had to go somewhere in the overworld but given zero context or clues about where or how to go there. (Which is what the Grumps ran into first. But in some fairness to the game this is Arin "doesn't pay attention" Hanson who doesn't ever do tutorials or just clicks through everything. Resorting to using a guide in games you shouldn't need them like Wind Waker and more recently Phoenix Wright. Grumps are not really the best to go too for honest gameplay just more laughs and satire.) But the whole game was just too open with the overworld and never helped the player out when they needed it. Its just all those things happening in a short time that ruin it and Sonic 06 is just not fun to play until you get to shadow levels or late game Sonic ones. Silver is only fun for the first mission then they throw him into environments and puzzles thag are just not suited or hard to use him in.

My idea as to how Mephilies could come back, is if he was in Shadow's mind. He couldn't mind control him, he couldn't hurt him, he's just an entity inside of Shadow's mind. He could manipulate Shadow in a certain way, saying stuff like "This is the only way, this is how it was meant to be." It could be interesting nonetheless, cuz that would imply that Shadow is the only one who remembers the events of Sonic 06.

Well for two reasons. 1:Cuz he’s the ultimate life form. 2:In my head, I would imagine that the only kind of people that could remember a time wipe, are androids. (That’s what I would say, anyway) I think that sounds interesting, and it could add more to Shadow’s character, with us asking how does he handle those memories?

If they bring Mephiles back, they need Iblis for it....but other than that there is nothing really to stop him from reappearing. In my opinion they just erased this specific timeline in the game from happening - but Solaris is time itself so....who know maybe thy are split in some other timeline and this Mephiles makes it back to our current timeline. And if Blaze really has Iblis flames which is heavily implied (being from another dimension - the dimension she sealed herself to in 06, the sol dimension) maaaybe they could do something with Blaze in the future - and Silver because he is a great character too. Maybe those ideas could be some plotlines for an upcoming Silver the Hedgehog game....one can dream, right? Anyways I am glad I am not the only one that really loves Mephiles...great video as always, thank you!

Well lord Danny made a video on how he could return without iblis. Basically he would be made from the goo from the black comet and fused with Shadow’s DNA. I’d advise watching that because Lord Danny explained it much better

The 06 version of Mephiles was prevented from being born, before the timelines split, so all versions of him and Iblis were erased simultaneously. However, the Ian Flynn idea has some merit, and perhaps he might even retain his memories of 06... 🤔🤔🤔

One of Sonic Team's biggest problems is confusing "dark and intimidating" with "edgy." Its a very, _very_ important line you mustn't cross, but they've shown time and time again that they really aren't know where that line _is._ From a villain design perspective, consider someone like Darth Vader as you epitome of "dark and intimidating." There's a reason that character works so well, and there's a reason you'd never consider the guy "edgy."

I think this is very interesting, cause Sonic '06 is always lampooned for being a terrible game. I don't mean to disagree, but could SEGA also just be scared of reusing Mephiles cause of all the hate Sonic '06 got. I think a new villian would be great, or revamp Eggman, and make him darker. Like back when he was in the original games, or in Sonic Adventure 2. Make eggman an absolute savage again.

I love Mephiles, I think he's one of the best villains in the Sonic franchise. I feel like part of the reasons they won't bring him back is that Sonic '06 was such a resounding failure that they don't want to acknowledge even the best parts of its existence. They'd rather wipe it from memory than embrace what was great about it.

Mephiles is one of the few good things about Sonic 06. That game was garbage. Mephiles, however, was a gold standard villain! He brought horror in the cheerful atmosphere that was Sonic. I think he should at least get another chance as a boss fight.

Like say what you will about 06, Mephiles is a high of that game. He kept the story entertaining, was the only one to kill Sonic and pose an actual threat to reality itself, was actually outclassing Shadow and tried to manipulate Silver into killing him as a means to change the future (which was a lie obviously). So powerful even Eggman had to do truce with the gang to take him down. The fact that he popped up as a playable character in Runners showed they do in fact still acknowledge that he exists. Ian Flynn even believed that the Time Eater (Gens main threat) was what remained of Mephiles in the new timeline. He was more cunning, evil and ruthless than Zavok and Infinite could have been. He HAS to return at some point.

Anything your aforementioned Robotnik is doing is a different scenario than the Dr. Eggman of the games. Theres a thing called Alternative Universes. Which should be there to differenciate in this case the Eggy from the games from the Eggy from the cartoon and comics. They. Are Not. The Same. Person. They may share certain aspects, but they arent alike. At least not 1:1.

In the games, Eggman has admitted to only caring about the people's existence, because he can't rule an empty planet. In 06, his own life was on the line, so he helped the heroes in order to survive. If there's one thing he can be relied on to keep in mind, it's self-preservation!

By not restricting Mephiles' powers, the writers made him TOO competent a villain. He even could have gone back right after the failed experiment that separated them and joined back right there.

I believe it was explained that Iblis had evolved to not be able to refuse with Mephiles. Now why couldn't he do it the moment Iblis escapes in the future? Why couldn't he refuse with Iblis by going back before Iblis was sealed? Well i think that has to do with Time Shenanigans. He was already there. So what would've happened to himself if he fused with Iblis and became Solaris infront of his past self? What about the moment Iblis escapes in the future? Perhaps Mephiles and Iblis have to be from the same time in order to fuse with eachother. We don't really know. And trust me. They're never gonna explain it
