Why sports rights deals are getting so expensive

ESPN (owned by Disney (DIS)) and the NCAA are extending their programming deal for another 8 years. This deal is set to begin in September 2024. The addition of streamers to the media landscape has led to stiff competition for some of these rights deals.
Desser Media President Ed Desser joins Yahoo Finance Live to weigh in on the demand for sports deals and who the real winners are.
According to Desser, “sports has become the most important form of programming for linear networks." When you add streamers into the mix, “You’ve got an increase in demand, against relatively fixed supply,” notes Desser, giving sports federations the upper hand.
