You can (and will) make up whatever bullshit you want but Lucas himself on many occasions going way back explicitly said that after ep.6 there was peace in the galaxy. There was no clone of the emperor or Thrawn or anything after ep.6. And Disney is only confirming this. Superman and SW are different senarios. Superman source material is the comics, the creators are no longer alive to direct him and DC makes all decisions. Until the sale Lucas dictates what is canon or not and to him the movies and clone wars and soon rebels are canon. NOT anything else. Don't take my word though. Learn for yourself instead of assuming.

Regarding Coruscant appearing in the prequels, Timothy Zahn had this to say at Celebration III: "Just to make it clear, I did not invent the planet…George Lucas had invented the planetwide city a long time ago. When I was starting the Thrawn Trilogy, they told me to coordinate with the West End Games source material, and they had it listed as the Imperial Planet. Well nobody names a planet 'Imperial Planet,' so I thought it needed a name, so I picked the word that means glittering: 'Coruscant.' Apparently, when it came time to choose a name [for the films], people persuaded George to go with Coruscant and be done with it. So I felt very vindicated -- the tail wagging the dog. It was an honor to be slipped into the movies this way.

This is an amazing topic, I love it whenever Colin talks about Star Wars because I also grew up on the Expanded Universe and was a huge Star Wars fan in the early to mid 90's. George Lucas has ALWAYS made it clear that the expanded universe was not canon, there are several interviews you can view online where he states that throughout the years. Colin's absolutely right that some of the Expanded Universe stories were enthralling while others really were garbage. I think part of the problem is, Lucas never thought he was going to complete episodes 7, 8, and 9 so he basically just let the EU grow wild. I think this was a huge mistake because as cool as some of the aspects of the EU like Han and Leia having twins (Jace and Jaina) is such an awesome idea, Luke getting married to a former Emperor's Hand is unconscionable. Jedi don't do attachment, period. This isn't a light rule to be broken, just look at Anakin and Padme and what a disaster that turned out to be. Anyway, I look forward to the new trilogy and BEYOND! I like what Disney has done with Marvel and clearly they're putting even greater care into Star Wars so I think this is going to be huge.

I disagree with Colin, though I understand his frustrations. I love me some Star Wars, and I can appreciate the EU but when reading it I never expected any of it to be Official or Canon. That said, I rewatched the prequels recently, and I really don't think they deserve all the hate. They're not as good as 4-6, but they as standalone films they're not that bad. Finally, The Clone Wars, along with being Canon is AMAZING. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, get on that. I wasn't expecting much out of a CN cartoon, but I was seriously impressed. I love JJ, and I have faith for EP.7 8 & 9. May the force be with you all.

I agree that the prequels aren't as bad as people say. Ep 1 is awful but 2 and 3 are pretty good. In fact return of the jedi wasn't that good but it gets a pass. If it would have been made today people would have flipped about ewoks. They would have been saying "there are teddy bears in star wars?! You ruined my childhood". The prequels have problems but in all honesty so do the original trilogy. I love them all. And clone wars is so awesome!!! :)

If any gamers say they don't care about the EU...KOTOR is out, Force Unleashed is out, The Old Republic MMO is out, possibly even Jedi Academy (which I hear was pretty good). All these original ideas and hours of labor wiped out like Alderaan. So far the only viable thread to the old republic is the character Darth Bane and his rule of two(courtesy of Clone Wars S6). Having just finished reading a group of short stories about the "Lost Tribe of the Sith" Which is only a year or so old and being half way through both the "Darth Plageuis" and "Kenobi" books I don't know if I should even finish them. Personally I think this is solely an Abrams thing because, to my knowledge, time travel doesn't exist in Star Wars. So he can't do a "reboot/re-hashing" alternate timeline like Star Trek. I think he's a good director and he can get things started and find the right people, but I think he takes the lazy way out and redoes ideas the way he wants to do them. Case in point Star Trek: Into Darkness should not have been about Khan. It should have been a Mirror/Mirror universe movie. You would have still gotten the dark side of star fleet (literally) and could have fleshed out something that has never been fully fleshed out in visual media. The Entertainment industry has its customers by the balls most of the time. Because unless something sells it's never seen again for a long time. And that's not cool. I think Lucas should have done a Willy Wonka scenario with his Star Wars Empire.

In the case of Dash Rendar - In the special edition of Ep. IV you can see the outrider taking off from Tatooine. So at the very least Dash Rendar exists in the official canon if not the whole game SOTE.

Wan't to hear something messed up: I got into Star Wars through the EU. Tie fighter is my first meaningful Star Wars experience. That got me into the train storyline. The original dark forces made all the enemies and weapons iconic for me. The idea that it was curated and internally consistent is why star wars was cool. Was. Episode I-III should have been written off until the clone wars series made it cool.

Also... Disney didn't say that anything that's not canon never happened. They're saying IF IT CONFLICTS with what happens in the movies, what happens in the movies or future canon takes precedent. So some of the things discussed here such as Shadows of the Empire wouldn't change, unless a future Han Solo or Boba Fett movie changes any of that which would be unlikely.

Lucas didn't "steal" Coruscant. The concept was his from Return of the Jedi. You can see McQuarrie concept art of Coruscant from the 80's. It just didn't yet have a name other than "Imperial City" or something like that. Lucas' idea was for a planet that was covered in city. After the Thrawn Trilogy, "Coruscant" was always the name used for the capital in books, games, and comics. Is Lucas then supposed to change that or get accused of stealing? Lucasfilm was declaring everything as part of a single universe. A single story. So the prequel's went to coruscant, the capital created by Lucas and named by Zahn(for which I'm sure he was paid royalties for). Also, Lucas was involved in the Thrawn Trilogy, giving notes for story ideas, locations, etc.

The difference between comic book continuity and the old Star Wars EU is that it had more or less a fixed definitive timeline, complete with dates and locations. As Colin says the Holocron guys were actually hired by Lucasfilm to keep this stuff straight. When comics are relaunched it's a bit different.

The EU isn't canon but that doesn't change their existence, and Disney specifically said that content creators from this point forward can take whatever they want from the EU. So if JJ wants to do an Heir to the Empire trilogy of movies, he can. He can take the books, word for word, beat for beat, character for character and make 3 films. At that point, Heir to the Empire will become canon. So this hate on Disney for officially stating that the EU is not canon is ridiculous. The stories still exist. Creators can take whatever they want from the EU. Once the Episode VII trailer hits and it looks awesome, Colin will be singing a different tune.

It sucks that the EU is non canon now, it eliminates a lot of stuff I liked sure, but I feel it's important to give the new writers the freedom to explore what they want. Tim's point about how everything is canon now is what makes me accept this. If Disney can get some good writers on the books/comics going forward the new canon could be great. The old EU didn't contradict itself, because there was respect among the different authors and creators. The only things that contradicted the EU was shitty old stuff like the marvel comics and whatever Lucas touched after 1999 because he didn't care. I'm with Colin, turning around and saying all the EU is basically null and void hit hard. The first EU books I remember was the Young Jedi Knights series which focused around Jacen and Jaina Solo, and while I never read a lot of the books, I did read a lot of the pages from the Star Wars Datafile part works series that filled in the blanks. Now to hear that a lot of my favourite characters' fates are being changed (Chewbacca, Boba) or some may never of existed (Jaina, Mara) really disappoints me. While I don't know if it was JJ's decision, it annoys the crap out of me that he's essentially done the same thing that he did with Trek and ruined the content that the fan base, that has kept the franchise running during the "dark times", loved. I'll go watch it, but i am way more enthusiastic about Avengers 2 than Star Wars 7... and that saddens me.

Fast forward 4 years- the abomination that is The Last Jedi completely outdoes the prequel trilogy in abominable writing, character consistency, and adds a sorely unneeded element of agenda-pushing. The EU was one of the best things about the Star Wars universe, because it became a place others could be a part of. With KennedyKanon, I'm constantly told that only "true fans" will support the new movies; that the literature I used to love reading was incoherent garbage and too complex for people; and that the figures that inspired me, like Luke Skywalker, must be supplanted by perfect blank slate Mary Sues that never undergo any sort of trials or hardships. I'm not done with Star Wars. I will always love it. It never truly left. And I fully understand that the horrid proxy masquerading in its place under the direction of Kuntleen Kennedy is not Star Wars, anymore than Alien 2 was an actual sequel to Ridley Scott's Alien.

Everything after Ep.6 in the EU was NEVER considered canon. I wish I could site where it came from but GL himself said that material after ep.6 is EU and NOT canon. I love the show and am a fan Colin, but I have to say the level of dislike for any future Star Wars makes me think of some guys getting upset when someone disagrees with a review, but have never played the game. I understand wanting to trim up the story, but to leave all the shitty additions/changes that fans hated while scrapping what were arguably the only things keeping the franchise alive is just fucked.

Star Wars has long had levels of canon. G canon was at the top, but that didn't mean the rest of the EU didn't count. Now it doesn't.

The third episode was ok. The best of prequel trilogy.

I would agree with that, I didn't hate Episode 2 either. Episode 1 was... ugh.

In the end, what bothers me is that all the great authors that poured life into the EU are now just glorified fanfic writers. I think Disney has every right to decide what is and isn't canon now that they're taking the franchise forward, but if I was one of the writers I would feel so bummed out.

I felt that the prequels was aimed towards kids a lil too much. I think the new movies will take a more dark approach. Looking forward to it.
