Finally, one with some good sense. I enjoyed your video. One correction thought. SW ships don't fight like WW2 ships. WW2 warships had a small number of very high caliber guns that were mounted on turrets and could finish off other ships in a few salvos. SW ships fight more like 18th-19th century sail ships. Those ships had a big number of guns in their sides and were fighting in close proximity broadsides.

Some WW2 warships could take literally hundreds of shells without sinking though. Although you are right about star wars ships generally having large numbers of smaller guns. I would say the combat is still much more similar to WW2 ships. They sometimes fight very close, sometimes at longer ranges, but rarely do they go broadside to eachother. The ships have command bridges and heavy armor. They have fighter support and point defense batteries.

@dylanjones90614 жыл бұрын
But how often do you see an airplane with an X-wing design? The weight is almost entirely in front of the wing, and the double-wing design seems to serve no purpose with respect flight and, together with the weapons for some reason mounted way out at the tips (where they're more vulnerable), would add extra weight to the wings. And how often do you see Star Wars ships flying around in an atmosphere without the aid of wings at all? I'm with Eckharts. The only redeeming feature of Star Wars ships is that they look cool. There's just no point in trying to defend their practicality.
@vipergtsrgt14 жыл бұрын
The X-Wing fighter doesn’t have wings with an airfoil shape, so those wings won’t actually generate lift in atmosphere. It will be more aerodynamic than a Tie Fighter, but those wings don’t make them fly. Ships in Star Wars rely on repulsorlift technology to counter gravity.

My biggest issue always was the lack of smaller guns to defend against fighters and bombers. When episode 8 began with yet another instance of "fighter does whatever it wants to a capital ship because it doesn't have any decent defenses", my facepalm could be heard through the entire cinema. Since the later stages of WW2, ships are filled to the brim with AA guns and later surface to air missiles. The traditional turreted layout would also still make sense in SW. They could provide a nearly 360° coverage horizontally, and at least 180° vertically, i.e. covering a half-sphere. That's a hell of a lot better than any of the usual placements shown in SW.
@bladeclanhalo36 жыл бұрын
the empire and first order didnt focus on fighter and anti fighter weapons on their capital ships, they thought them to be useless. think of IJN yamato, it had terrible anti air because the ship was built with the idea that bigger guns win fights. a star destroyer would just launch its own screening fighters against enemy fighters, while using its main guns to destroy any larger ships and force a retreat
@coraldiamond19226 жыл бұрын
T33K3SS3LCH3N As someone else said the empire and first order considered small craft like the x wing to not be able to do tons of damage. But in the last Jedi the x wing was piloted by someone who was a very capable pilot. They were only taking out the turrets for the bombers. That is why once he started taking out the turrets they released their tie fighters. The turrets on the bombers though were well designed allowing the operator to defend in many angles that other turrets in that position that would not allow for that.

Don´t you know that story about the USS Donald Cook? @_Feanor_.6 жыл бұрын
That's probably because episode 8 is the shittiest Star Wars Movie of them all. With so many mistakes that it would take an hour to list them all. Although Poe was already portrayed in Ep 7 to be too much of a great pilot. Remember that assault on Maz' bar when the Resistence showed up and you had this beautiful shot of a X-wing blowing up several Tie-Fighters with ease in a matter of seconds. That's the theme of the Disney Triology. It just matters that it looks stunning, nevermind if it makes sense. Style over substance. In Star Wars lore you become a Flying Ace when you have 5 kills, and that's an achievement. Poe got more kills than that in less than 30 seconds of a single fight. That's too overpowered. Not even Luke, Anakin or Wedge did anything like that in their flying days. So Poe shouldn't either.
@Kurogumo6 жыл бұрын
What kind of authority? Sailors from the Cook say that story is bull. One, USN destroyers are EMP hardened, ECM wouldn't do anything to it. And two, disabling a USN ship is an act of war, and the Russians know this.

1. The Bridge: Modern warships dating back to the 1930’s have a CIC (Combat Information Center) buried deep in the hull of the ship to ensure continued operations even when the wheel house is damaged. A CIC in SW would make a lot of sense. 2. Weapons: Iowa-class battleships had a mix of short range and AAA to protect it against “snub fighters”. SD’s with no AAA is just stupid. 3. Gunners/command and control: Modern warships can put their weapons on “god mode” and allow the ship’s computer full control to prioritize and engage targets with zero human interaction. When we shot down an airliner in the 90’s it was because a human screwed up. Had the computer been in control it wouldn’t have happened.
@dixieslav12744 жыл бұрын
I may be thinking of a different plane that was shot down, but the Iranian airliner (I think was) shot by an American ship wasn't broadcasting any FoF signal. The FoF signal basically tells anyone with the right codes "don't shoot, I'm friendly," so not broadcasting it pretty much announces "I'm here to attack" A computer would've shot it down even sooner than a human.

You can still look cool as anything, and still make sense. Not only can making sense look cool, but it can also wind up being far more effective. For example: The Imperial Star Destroyer. First, get rid of the bridge tower entirely. Increase the angle between the dorsal and ventral surfaces. Include an aft section of the ship where the hull slopes back down, sort of like a diamond shape. This gives you more internal volume, and more places to put weapons. Now that you've got 12 vertexes, move all your weapons to those vertexes, so that they can shoot in a much wider field of fire. With this weapons lay out, your fore guns can shoot everywhere but directly aft and are still useful if you need broadside. your side guns can still shoot fore and aft, and your aft guns can shoot everywhere but forward. Your bridge is inside the hull where it's protected by a whole lot of armor. Having more internal volume also means that you can dedicate more space to hangars and provide for more hangar openings. not only can you have more openings, but you can also place those openings so that your fighters are protected by your hull on launch and recover ops when your ship is engaging the enemy on your primary attack vector (for the Empire, that would be a frontal assault), so your bays go in the aft section and exit port and starboard. This also means that you can technically perform launch and recovery operations simultaneously from different bays. You absolutely do NOT NEED WINDOWS like other people are saying. Even a few years ago, we had TVs that have a high enough resolution that you can't tell it apart from real life from more than a foot away. place a few extra cameras on the hull, and you get a live feed to wherever you are, even when you're deep within the hull. Instead of having a B-1 battle droid operating a gunner station in the same way that a humanoid would, they should have just installed a droid brain directly into the tactical sensors and fire control of the weapon implacement. They would only have to build a droid brain instead of building a whole droid. The money they saved on not building the droid body could be spent on building a better droid brain. That always bugged me about the Trade Federation and by extension the Confederacy of Independent Systems. They could build a capital ship capable of controlling an entire droid army from orbit, but they couldn't figure out how to automate their weapon systems? One more benefit to a ship with minimal complement of Organics on board is that they would only have to have life support in the sections occupied by organic crew and command. The rest of the ship could be kept in a state of hard vacuum. It would be a foolproof fire suppression method and it would make boarding operations much more difficult.
@pjmetzen34836 жыл бұрын
Mike Vasquez They did have a ship like that but evidently the technology to completely automate and control a ship isn't quite there in the Star Wars universe. That destroyer had issues focusing down a single ship and ignoring others and colliding with friendly ships to get a firing Arc on enemies. In theory it was a good idea but in practice it didn't work..... yet *looks to episode 9*
@theoncomingdork16 жыл бұрын
i mean, i guess it was just down to the economics of it. they had billions of b1 droids already being mass produced, so starting up a new production line and refitting all the ships with droid brains would be an expensive venture
@UncleMikeDrop6 жыл бұрын
Yu-Kai Ni I see where you're coming from, but they wouldn't have to develop a whole new production model of droid. All they would have to do is manufacturer the standard droid brain and only program it with the necessary tactical data to effectively operate a gun turret(turbo laser, ion cannon, laser cannon, etc.) All it would have to know how to do is operate a specified weapon system. It would have no need for ambulation, articulation, or ground tactics. That would free up a lot of processing power to focus on one specific function. If anything, it would save them money because they wouldn't lose as many ships and by extension they would lose far fewer resources in fact, all of the energy that they're not using to maintain life support, climate control, and gravity could be rerouted to weapons, engines, and shields.
@theoncomingdork16 жыл бұрын
True enough. Also though, the CIS really mismanaged a lot of things. Also worth mentioning, the Recusant-class light destroyer was primarily droid-operated. Not sure if that means droid brains or actual droids, though.
@UncleMikeDrop6 жыл бұрын
Patrick Metzen I appreciate that, but they wouldn't be automating the whole ship. They would just have the droid brains operating their turrets individually much like they did with droid starfighters. There would still be organic officers serving in a command capacity just like they were already doing. The turret droids wouldn't have any extraneous subroutines diminishing their tactical effectiveness. I absolutely agree that Star Wars automation potential is nowhere near what it should be, but the parameters I laid out would require only a very rudimentary level of automation.

With the addition of the prequels, many have noted that many locations actually appear to be doing better under Imperial rule. Plus, those attacked are rebels who oppose the Empire and threaten war anyway, so really, despite being lead by a Sith master, the Empire is generally only shown forcing their style of order over the galaxy and the rebels main motivation is simply freedom to choose their own way. Now, the Empire, or at least Vader, does allow people like Jabba to continue on, so the system isn't perfect, but, the Empire is apparently liked by its populace to some extent as Luke was considering joining in the very beginning. It seem like the Empire kept their more shady actions covert, but, then again, most real wars are fought merely over a difference in ideology, so, unlike WWII, one side doesn't have to be blatantly evil.

When I was a kid I read mock up designs for proposed crafts that would run on antimatter or fusion or even fission power. Almost ALL of the designs involved long causways with the crew quarters located as far from the engine as physically possible with shielding in between to avoid exposure to deadly gamma rays and radiation. The ships all ended up looking like something very similar to star wars ships with the crew quarters needing to be placed on top of things to put as much shielding as possible between the crew and the engine or reactor it was using to power the ship. So in short. It makes total sense. It wouldn't make sense if it was designed some other way.

BUMMFISH, not really, late 19th and early 20th century warships of the line had three controlling points. A Bridge, unprotected, looking at IJN Miksasa, a pre-dreadnaught battleship, the bridge only had a canvas covering for a roof (well actually they are multiple bridges, all in the same area such as the flying bridges). The ship was not intended to be commanded in battle on the bridge (Well tell that to Togo Heihachairo, who did command from the unprotected, uncovered bridge in the Battle of Tsushima and never got killed for it). Below the bridge or more inward is the conning tower. The Conning Tower is an armored portion, IJN Yamato had 56cm of raw steel in this area for horizontal protection, and the US Iowa class has over 40cm of steel. This is where you are to actually fight the battle, there is a small tube that connects the conning tower to the citadel, as most of a WWII era ship is unarmored (see All-or-Nothing Armor scheme) contacting things like the engine telegraph. The third place is the aft steering compartment located right above the steering gears. The third place is really only used in emergencies. The CIC was first installed into US Carriers post 1942 and only to control vectoring fighters to intercept courses based on radar data. There was no engine telegraph, or any steering functionality, no ability to control gun fire, although later iterations of the CIC would get better at this. Modern day CICs control data links, radar, missiles, guns, communications, security, and damage control. But a view with your own eyes of the battle is still way more valuable than what a camera or radar image can provide. This is why Togo Heihachario commanded the IJN Combined Fleet from the unprotected bridge of the Mikasa, you actually find out that you either armor things up and cannot see in the real world, or you drop some armor for more visibility... And that's not even talking about WWI/WWII Fire control, WWI/WWII fire control directions were unarmored structural steel mounted at the highest points on a ship. As these instruments used delicate electronics (USN/RN) or precious optics (IJN). Even the vibrations of a hit somewhere else can throw off the gun fire control. Just like what happened to the USS South Dakota in the Battle of Guadalcanal, A single shell (probably from a 12,7cm/40 Type 89 or 15,2cm/50 41st Year Type on Kirishima, a pop gun with no business in a Battleship dual) knocked out electricity to the entire gun control system located atop the bridge prevent US gunners from firing back, if the USS Washington hadn't been there, a 30-year old "Fast Battleship" (battlecruiser) and her escorts would've knocked out a modern US Battleship. These things were large because in order to see far, you need either a very large radar set, or very large and good optical equipment.

Ironically, Star Wars ships engage at much closer distances than naval battleships and don't even follow the philosophy of extremely caliber guns and armor that can resist anything but said guns. What if the ship loses power? @EbonyManta6 жыл бұрын
I think if power goes out on a ship such that you can't even tell where the enemy ships are without looking out a window, the crew on that ship has bigger problems to worry about. It's unlikely they could actually _do_ much even if they could see, after all.
@kingdamager73706 жыл бұрын
And worst of all, they are incredibly inaccurate. They can't hit the broadside of a ship. For being so advanced, they have a serious lack of automated targeting systems. With their weapons and our targeting systems, fighters would be useless.

The most annoying thing to me, being an avid Elite Dangerous player, is that all of the ships fly like planes and take ZERO advantage of being in space. Why would you ever fly like a plane when in space you can fly backwards just as fast while still shooting at what’s in front of you? You don’t need weapons on your ventral side if you maneuver properly at least for smaller ships. Super star destroyers have too much mass to maneuver quickly in different directions so those I would expect to have guns everywhere.

Well, the Battlestars in Battlestar Galactica (at least the new one) are sensibly designed and still look cool, so you can have both. Similarly, the Bismarck or Iowa class battleships also were sensibly designed with their function in mind and still ended up looking, at least to me, some of the most beautiful warships ever built. Still, it would be nice if some designers would at least study the basics of what makes a, in this example, warship, a warship and then figure out the design around it.
@danhostetler14236 жыл бұрын
I would say it depends on the director and cast's desire to have an accurate portrayal. There are movies and shows where they have experts on hand to keep accuracy. Like Lie to Me was a show like that. But I think the money usually dictates cutting those corners and many in the industry lean too heavily on the suspension of disbelief principle of hollywood.
@michaelskywalker30896 жыл бұрын
Since the design is not vetted by any real operational test; beyond a minimum level of audience believability; the design serves the purpose of the story. The storyline/character development relies on a sea-based naval environment. That's how those capital ships ended up being so weak relative to smaller ships because they were an adapted design of sea based ships.

Different universe, but I hate how in the new Star Trek movies and Discovery the ships suddenly have bridge windows. The bridge was always needlessly on top as well in ST, but at least they never had windows. They use a view screen linked to the sensors that can display far more information than just the front view. And then JJ came along and decided there should be a window there...

It's also there in TOS bridge as well, for the sole purpose of having that opening shot in The Cage, which is also probably the only reason the bridge has to be on top of the ship.
@PaiSAMSEN6 жыл бұрын
Not necessary from maintenance perspective. If the bridge is modular design, placing it on top would allow much easier access than placing it deep inside the hull. (One of the reason modern warships love to put their CIC right below the bridge is this reason. They can simply cut one deck open and drop equipments from there. Since modern warship seem to build on the concept of not getting hit in the first place, vulnerability isn't much of an issue.) Of course, if your ship is expected to get hit all the time, it isn't such a good idea.

There are reasons why its like that, its all have to do with Republic credits and massive profits in mind. If the vessels are sturdy and efficient, then I believe Kuat Drive Yards wont last long. Indefinite contract with Imperial Navy and Army is main objective and achieve, need to keep that contract forever! For such thing to happen, continuous building to replace lost ships is a must, and what better way than producing awkward inefficient designs ? When there are continuous demands, Kuat Drive Yards shall profits (hopefully the war will bring more demand......and Republic credits!).

To me all of the Star Wars ships, in particular the Imperial Star Destroyers makes sense in an aesthetic sense. They were originally meant to look like WWII Japanese Pagoda style battleships. Hence why they had clear, tall bridges and upper works. A clear "front" and "rear" even the color... Its why the smaller ships often looked like WWII light cruisers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts. Its why X-wing fighters look like the cross between an arrow and a MIG-21 from the cold war. Its why the Y-Wing looks like a fast attack fighter-bomber like a Mosquito, or P38.. Even the B26.. I just don't know what was with the AT-AT's.. Giant robo combat cows (Battle Cattle?) and AT-ST's.. Giant robo battle kangaroos..

@jessikapiche60976 жыл бұрын
AT-AT were cool to the bone, and everyone love them. The idea was to give Luke the 'cattle tie up' idea around the legs since they share the same vulnerability of high legs and the snowspeeder having the tow cable. It was a plot design choice and i will add, a wonderful one, making the point that even if facing with impossible forces, there was sometime a way to use 'old' and 'instinctive' knowledge to overcome it! George have always said that Star Wars is about saying that if technology is wonderful, the human mind is even more MIRACULOUS. That is the deeper meaning of STAR WARS if you didn't realized already. That is why a lot of their 'design' is about making humans look good. But of course, if you design everything logically without flaws, there is no story to tell... Luke would have been killed and never join Obi-Wan in his journey toward becoming a Jedi! And that is also why the movies of today have no soul, have no lasting interrest, and basically are empty to the soul of people watching them...they speak to your logic but not your soul...

My main issue is the severe lack of point defence. There is no reason why you can't plop hundreds of small automated miniguns all over the hull of any ship. They could output a huge volume of small arms firepower and mince any Starfighter or missile no matter how skilled the pilot. The other thing is that capital ships should be engaging targets from thousands of kilometers away, not point black.

Real lasers disperse over distance. You can take a high powered that can cut through steel plate at an inch, mount it on the space station, point it at the moon, and it will be barely visible by the time it reaches the surface due to how wide of an area it is now covering. Blasters and such lose cohesion over distance and become less effective. A very common sci-fi trope with a basis in real world physics that makes weapons behave more like current modern stuff.

Propulsion in Star Wars (and Star Trek to a lesser extent) makes me snicker since they treat space as if there is air resistant and need a full burn to maintain a constant speed when all that would do would just accelerate. And they don't have nearly as large of thrusters pointing forward for a decel burn. Realistically space combat would look more like BSG or The Expanse. Unless they can manipulate inertia. They should be able to side strafe more often. And they should try spinning, that's a good trick!

Star Trek ships actually do manipulate inertia using the inertial dampers. Otherwise, the people in a ship would get squished every time they accelerate to full impulse speed.
@kudosbudo6 жыл бұрын
With large rear thrusters there would be alot more flip and burn. The fighter battles with star wars ship and expanse style combat would look really cool. BUT it would make several scenes impossible. Take teh original Trench run. All they had to do was have one skilled pilot flip his ship and face rear protecting them as they did the run. Poor Darth would have had to try and dodge return fire. .. maybe that scene would have been even better? Either way I just pretend the ships have onboard flight computers to fire lateral thrusters allowing them to move their ships through space like a knife through butter, similar to how Elite Dangerous ships have flight assist.

Not only that, in deep space rockets would be aerospike, not bell nozzle since there is no atmosphere and then on top they would only be used for docking with hyperspace available. In a battle why do they need to be broadside like pirate ships? Not even in WWII was that necessary.

I know I made a comment already, but oh well. (This is my attempt/ thoughts of a reason why everything is like that) -I think that in Star Wars there is a reason ship are like that. For one thing the creators of all these ships (In star wars at least) are the corporations. -For one thing they want to sell their product, so in thus the Star destroyer which was intended to look intimidating is designed as such. Meanwhile Mon Calamari ships used by the rebels were originally cruise liners or along such lines designed to be less so. Looking at Mon Cal ships after the new republic "New Class Modernization Project" their designs changed in many ways. -Meanwhile if you look at ships used by the corporations to defend their holdings. They are powerful ships that are somehow able to outgun, and overpower all their designs sold to star wars factions (I could be wrong here). Usually these ship look nothing like their sponsored products. So those are my thoughts....

The other thing about the hangars is the susceptibility to the Star Wars weaponry. What I mean by this is that by creating a choke point at specific places by using one hangar, an enemy could easily just line up a ship with a huge battery of lasers and mow down half your fighters before they can even be deployed. With many hangars this becomes much harder to do. With one, it's pretty damn easy.

If I remember correctly, the triangular star destroyer design was supposed to make it easier to focus all of your weaponry on the ship ahead of you while also giving you the possibility to do broadsides if the need arises. The problem is that the ships used by the republic and empire rarely placed their weapons in a way to actually make use of that design feature and went for pure broadsides
