Usually corporations don't want unions because that means a lot (and I mean lot) more corporate overhead. You have to negotiate contracts--sometimes leading to strikes, settle disputes in a formal way, and you can't just terminate people at will. It has a significant impact on what unions call "management rights". Every clause in the collective agreement is a limitation that the company didn't have to deal with in the past. I wouldn't personally start a business just because of the inane laws on employment, just imagine increasing that exponentially. It gets geometrically worse when different parts of the company join different unions. My employer has to deal with no less than eleven unions with seven different contracts in a single location.

You see the thing is there is no incentive to give employees anything, the only exception is when there is labor shortage, but other than there's none. On the other hand there is always a BIG incentive to pay workers less: the owner gets more. Without a balance of power every single company will always end up tipping the scale in favor of the owner(s), it's just a matter of time. The union is meant to make that power balace happen, without it as a person you have ZERO leverage.

I actually make my own coffee, especially during a flu pandemic (about 50 cent a cup) I didn't have to worry about who made it or who I was standing 6 feet away from, plus I enjoyed it better than what comes in a paper cup (just more litter). There’s nothing wrong with wanting better working conditions but it’s a waste to do it at a company that’s already above the industry standard. If Walmart or McDonald’s employees unionized that’s something that’s worthwhile. Being tired and struggling financially is not just a problem stemming from working at Starbucks, it’s a wider societal problem that everyone is going through right now. Unions are not going to be able to help you when these companies starts replacing you with robots because it makes the most financial sense to them. A barista is someone in Italy roasting and grounding their own coffee and running their own independent shop, someone who mix different types of sugary things into a cup and put some whip cream on top is not a barista you’re an assembly worker. Sorry but these companies, no matter how progressive they claim to be, are not going to keep you around when having robots starts making more and more financial sense.

Yup they'll be disappointed in the unions eventually because they'll pay dues and get nothing. They'll go on strike and after 2 weeks they will never get back what they lost in wages. And the union will just be "yeah we're behind you all the way". That's all the union will give them moral support.

What benefit for a young part time employee you ask??? I was not allowed to use a box cutter. Making my job harder. There was no gloves for trash. If I forgot a can they'd leave it as is until my next shift. Unions don't work in most scenarios.

Congrats. I've seen people at Stop & Shop get massive advances in their contracts by striking. Were you individually ever expected to do the job of 4-5 positions simultaneously, and paid the same amount?
