What this video really showed was the amount of grabbing, tackling, plain old fouling that Steph endured without getting calls, especially in the playoffs. Once in awhile the defender was called but not nearly the same as for Jordan (look at him and it's a foul).

watching these clips reminded me of how reliable shaun livingston was for this team. he only scored 5 or 6 points a game with the warriors, but he shot over 50% every year. It was amazing seeing him come in at the end of the 1st and 3rd, and consistently get buckets while steph and klay rested. Completely unrelated to this video, but he was a major reason for their success

The 2015 and 2016 warriors were incredibly deep, they went 10 men deep with players who could have started on many other teams. Shaun was a mismatch on every other PG on both ends, Speights was just a plain bucket getter, Ezeli was a very solid rim running center, Leandro Barbosa was a solid shooter and put major pressure on defenses in transition with his speed, and obviously iguodala was Iguodala

Curry’s ball handling was highlighted in this series when you saw the alternative in Tatum who had a ton of TO’s in the finals and couldn’t find his own shot. Also saw this with KD in the first round. Steph and LeBron are a level above KD and Tatum due to their ability to handle the ball and distribute out of a double team.

And needs all timers (as in player and all time incident for the opponent, a-la 2015) + HOFers stars/role players to win all the way? The reason his three is deadly is because he can get by almost anyone, so you can't just play up on him like other shooters of the past, you have to respect his ability to get to the basket and so that creates space for his amazing, quick release threes that happen to be more accurate than any shooter in history. Defense by individuals and how it affects the team is hard to find justify via advanced stats at times. Especially since defensive strategies are a team based thing and if the effort on that chain 'breaks' then the whoever is at the end will be in a bad position to try contest the player with the ball. But high motor on defense is always a very good sign especially by a player whose known around the league to be the best offensive player without the ball.

Constant defensive activity, such as this video shows, is not easy to track or count or discuss. But it is a huge driver on good defensive teams - the kid(s) who will continue to track down / seek out and take up help assignments or close out ball movement is well worth putting onto the floor.

Guarding Steph is probably the most frustrating thing on the planet. He just sprints around the court for 15 seconds, catches a pass turns around flicks his wrist and flings up a perfect shot in 0.4 seconds that ends up barely hitting the inside of the net and then he just turns around and shimmies while you’re left out of breath and confused.

Steph is probably the most impactful offensive player of all time. It's not just his scoring, efficiency, ball handling, playmaking & finishing...it's also his off ball movement and his gravity which creates a lot of open looks for him teammates.

@@samhartje723 I watched the video & this video is for peaks only. If we’re speaking on the totality of a player which is his career on an all-time scale, how is it a comparison? Kareem hits 10 shots per game on 18 attempts for 56%, gets to the line more than Curry @ 6 FTA/G to Curry’s 4. will demand a double team at almost any year of his career with a 15% AST as a big man (the main reason why he has the most assists for a 7 footer ever), and had the most unique and effective shot ever created in the sky hook. Kareem was a terror in transition and it shows in an earlier video in this series. For all of Curry’s ball handling, off-ball movement, and gravity-Kareem owned the paint in the same fashion that Curry owns the 3PT space.

He seems more "active" because he's running more pick and rolls now and less Isolations, but off the ball he's still not all that active. It eases people's mind, to feel in control up until the end and trying to minimize as best as they can the chance of a miss by if they had to shot, is better to do it as close to the basket as you can. It seams proposterous today but in older times coaches would probably scream at you for spotting up outside the 3 point line, if you weren't one of the few sharp shooters. Intuition and loss aversion says: "the closer the better". But Steph, his dad and coaches saw that if everyone retreats they give you a ton of space to shoot, increasing your % accuracy and hits, and since 3s are worth more than 2s, anyone who were able to hit those at high level would be welcome since they can save a team in a pinch. And really good shooters draws defenders towards them which creates more space for you to run to the basket, i think at first they were thinking more at an individual level and didn't realized how this setted teammates as well, in which Kerr's brilliance comes in later. Since you need to meet a great shooter high - at times really high - and they keep being threatning wthout the ball as a spot up shooter, what you happen if you started the game with them without the ball? spotting up? What you happen if you putted another shooter? Drawing 2 defenders? You would create a ton of space for your other (bigger) players to attack. And what if you start moving your shooters? Teams eventually create tactics and catch up with what you are doing, and if lack of movement is the problem you create one, starting the Cat and Mouse game. This idea of creating all this running routes and blocks with people, antecipating positioning and thinking structural positions ahead, is identical to chess. It's the reason why a small team was butchering team with huge guys in a sport "buid for size". It turns out that the way people were seeing the game all along was backwards, it was not about size, there were many paths to the top of the mountain. And Kerr style unlocked a new reality that was always there. Which makes me think: what are the more expansions we didn't discovered yet but are there?

the thing is klay and curry pre 2016 with kd played in a different nba...the league is now younger and 5 years more experienced at playing the same game style as them with young players growing up practicing the same shots as curry and learning to shoot open like klay..its not 2015-early 2016 anymore...hell the 2016 thunder were up 3-1 on them easily almost won games 6-7 and the 2015 grizz gave them trouble until conley got hurt while on an already banged up team going into the series which cost them game 1 so i could argue the warriors pre kd were not this juggernaut as people claim...they were very beatable..they just got lucky in 2015 as the pelicans and rockets as well as the cavs and grizz all had injuries to key guys...the warriors did not play one starting pg for more then a few games in a series the entire playoffs...

This is an amazing video and was a pleasure to watch. I have been preaching to my players for years that Curry has been the actual best player in the league observing many of these same traits. I wish every basketball wannabe know it all would watch this video because it is spot on. Curry is the most underrated player of all time and really only gets the recognition from people that have very high basketball IQ and look without bias. I agree his impact profile is like that of Shaquille, MJ, Kobe or those players who have a consistent and unstoppable aspect of their game that even if you schemed a bunch of defenders to slow them down for stretches, they will never be out of the game and will beat you in the end the same way teams scouted them. Though I do think Curry owns a heliocentric like aspect despite not needing the ball because of owning the 'Reggie Miller' effect where they are so much more dangerous off-ball because of their shooting talents. Which opens up Curry for so many options including old school ones like him setting screens to compliment his just as effective catch and shoot 3-ball % to go with his pull up 3-ball %.

No one single player has put so much pressure on the defense simply by standing 40 feet away from the rim. His current 2021 season is showing even with triple teams and constant doubles, he's killing it with 11 (& counting) 30+ games, 62 career high, & a month averaging 40+. It's unfortunate both important playoff years of 2015 & 2016 he was injured. When healthy he is the most lethal offensive player ever. He makes his teammates better than other MVPs of the past. As a pure lover of the game, I disliked it when people kept insisting the bulls would have guarded him well. They couldn't even guard Chris Jackson (Abdul-Rauf) in one of their 10 losses to Denver that year, and in 2016, Phil Jackson himself got criticism for saying Curry reminded him of Rauf - because the shooting from those 2 were unguardable. No one goes nuclear like Curry except Thompson every few years. Curry does it every season.

Mike had the size, though. Also, Mike's ability to palm the ball made him so, so dangerous. That was the biggest difference between him and Kobe. It gave Mike another level of possibility. I've always said this but his 15/16 season is the greatest I've ever had the privilege to watch. The sheer volume of shooting, the efficiency of it and the audacity of where he would shoot from. Never seen anything like it and I highly doubt we'll ever see someone like Steph ever again
