Why Steve is the Loneliest God (A Minecraft Video Essay)

Minecraft needs more video essays. Just saying.
So yeah, I made this video after having played Minecraft for way too many years, without friends. It's amazing what one can do in Minecraft, yet how empty an infinite world can feel.
I am not even sure if people like my video essays that much, but I really like writing them, so I'll probably keep doing a few more of those.
A cute thing is that, from the moment Alex was added, Steve is almost never shown alone anymore. Even in the concept art Alex and Steve are always together. Seems like our lonely cavemen finally got a happy ending.

When I first got minecraft, I had no other friends who played it, and no access to servers. I could only make singleplayer worlds. I made a massive city when I was twelve. It spanned across an entire shattered savannah biome, connected by bridges of minecarts with powered rails. I even had some of these tracks go underground and lead to villages and landmarks biomes away. I built automatic farms on floating islands, a fifteen story building going from the ground to the highest point in the shattered savannah mountains, waterfalls, lakes, secret bunkers accessible only through odd redstone monstrosities. I terraformed the fuck out of my biome. I made a collection of huge glass domes and spheres on the ground and in the air to build my own taiga, jungle, desert, and flower field biomes. I built and fully decorated *hundreds* of houses. I was the lone occupant of the entire city.

I once built a massive underground kingdom with treasure rooms, trading areas, banquet halls, storage areas, homes, and machines. I built a huge wall with ornate guardtowers along the corners or at regular intervals. I even started work on a large futuristic sugarcane farm that would automatically collect and deposit its yield into transportation rails. I added fishing boats, wheat fields, a gothic mountain cabin, a riverboat, and I even converted my nether portal into a large corrupted tree. Then I just... stopped. Why was I building all this? What was my ultimate goal? This video essay perfectly sums up the story of singleplayer Minecraft for me.

Admins feared us(They still fears us even they banned us from joining they game sessions) yet fought pretty brave. We played like this and then we builded migthiest city that server ever seen and named it "Asgard".Some of them are still playing in that server but we left the server years ago.

@@Paleo-y1y Thanks for reminding me. Tektopia is probably the best among these (most notably because the buildings can be in any design you want, you just need the prerequisites for them to qualify as one thing or another.) It's got custom villager models and animations, offers a _lot_ of customisation for builds and actually running what feels like a proper community, and works pretty well with mods IIRC. The close-ish second for me is MineColonies, a mod for the newer versions that has villagers that have player skins and whatnot (in the sense that they're using player models, rather than the custom villager ones of TekTopia). It offers less in the way of direct customisation, being stuck to a specific 'research tree' where you can't give people fancier equipment than their building is set for, _but_ it allows you to lessen the burden on yourself a bit as the NPC's can get to working on the preset buildings of several types and architectural styles by themselves, so long as you give them the necessary tools and resources. Third is the one we're all familiar with: MineCraft Comes Alive. Honestly, still pretty dull and probably the least fleshed out of the three, but could be good if you're like me and have a thing for cottagecore. I've also heard of Ancient Armies 2 or something, but that's locked to 12.2 and hasn't been updated since late 2021. I've never played it, either, so I'm not able to give a proper description of it. Hope this helps!

I still make worlds like this. Make villages bigger and expand while doing my best to keep them safe because without those villagers I would feel truly alone. Once I started finding the lore of Minecraft I created my own stories in Minecraft books and thought of how it would have looked. I think of huge wars that were waged. Monsters that wiped out an empire. What happened to their civilization. While most players prefer to enslave the villagers or destroy their villages I did the opposite. One day I hope I can make all my single player worlds public. Allow people to see what I have created. Live in my world and help to make it better. I want the loneliness in my worlds to vanish. For the work I’ve put into my worlds to be appreciated. It may just be a simple block game but when we use our imaginations it can be so much more. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Utilize the bank I made, go to the zoo, take my long-distance underground rail system, go grocery shopping, just everything. I think that thats one of the things that make minecraft so magical. You could build anything, massive statues, beautiful cities, genious machinery, I know from experience people will spend years on a singleplayer survival/hardcore world, make so much things that even they themself forget about some of it from time to time, only to walk through their five years old city and see that one house using that one trick that they learned from that one old youtuber back in the day and suddenly feel that crazy hit of nostalgia. I myself have made multiple builds in the vein of ”secret stash for your diamonds” or ”hidden base your friends will NEVER find” knowing damn well I would never invite any of my friends to the server or even tell anyone about it, yet still have that server be one of the things most dear to my heart. I've always kinda thought of the player this way. I have, like many others, played this game throughout my entire childhood, and I have come to realize that after a time the only danger to the player is other players. Mobs become seldom a threat once you have full enchanted armor and weapons. When you're in singleplayer, this power makes it feel all the more lonely and maybe even unchallenging at times, but when you're in multiplayer, that looming loneliness quickly fades away and is replaced with a sense that there could be potential danger or companionship, or in the funnest case, both. Even if you're on some realm which rarely sees more than 2 players online at a time, it still feels less lonely knowing that there have been and can be players running amuck, creating and destroying as player-gods do. There is truly a lot to be said about the potent, nostalgic loneliness of Minecraft.

Another similar feeling can be obtained when you start playing a server with a couple of friends, and you see the server slowly die. And at some point you are the only player. You see all the buildings people made but in the end, it's all empty.

@@y0ink934 It's kind of hard to explain why I like to play singleplayer, because I don't get deterred from the loneliness part of singleplayer. I don't really know if singleplayer is for everyone, but playing hardcore definitely makes it more interesting. Adding a twist such as making a world set as buffet from 1.17 or before and converting it to 1.19 also proves a challenge. Imposing the greatest challenges is what motivates me to play on singleplayer, that, and you get to choose when the world dies. What I mean by this is that servers die when the players get bored of it, but in singleplayer, you can get bored then come back to it later. Singleplayer worlds can last as much time as you'd like when you put your mind to it.

I have a love hate relationship with single player mode. On the one hand I love having stuff all to myself because other people tend to cause complications with your builds and plans that you had but others didn’t. On the other hand after a while the loneliness starts to creep in and you miss the interaction with your fellow players no matter how much pain they gave you at times.

That’s actually a evolutionary adaptation even irl on one hand humans LOVE to argue because they always think there right. It’s hardwired into their brains that there always right, even if there wrong. On the other hand humans don’t like to be lonely because of paranoia issues that something is out to get them or something is missing in life.

Although I've thought about this before, I've never thought THAT deep. Watching this video made me sad, knowing that Steve or.. my character will be lonely forever, but something inside my head keeps telling me that I'm not alone in my own worlds. Thoughts like "Maybe I'll find someone if I look hard enough" and / or "I think I can find someone to play with" surface out of nowhere when i'm just minding my own businesses in my survival world. Despite knowing full well and is aware that this is single player, there is no one else that uses a multitude of items like me, there is no one else that builds and destroy as they wish like me, there is no one else that crafts items like me, there is no one else like me. Yet, my head slips that thought and surfaces them once more, perhaps i've finally grown lonely.. I did try to connect to multiplayer back then but i kept failing and thus, stuck in single player for a very long time.

Isolation is one of those things that’s so strangely terrifying and unnerving, the first time I felt it was in Minecraft, not unnerving in the way of you don’t know what’s in the darkness. But knowing that there’s nothing in the darkness, you don’t even have the comfort of certainty, assumption, or idea, that there’s something out there, there’s no one to talk to, no one to find and relate to. Nothing. I once wrote a story about the last man alive, an immortal, who at the end of his species realised that he couldn’t die, humanity died, his last friends and family, all gone now. The stars finally began to blink out, one by one, his only friend in the void being those blinkered stars slowly ebbing away. Then they went, all of them, and all that was left to him was barren rocks and dead moons, but even those would disappear eventually. Then, he was left with the black holes, he could just perceive them. But then, even they went out and he’s now left, alone, truly alone, lost in a sea of nothing, he doesn’t know if he’s moving or static, with no perception of distance anymore, he doesn’t know what the sound of scratching his own skin feels like anymore, because there is no such thing as noise anymore. But despite all this, even when all things disappear and rot away, he remains, the last thing in the entire universe. He starts to beg, he begs for anything, joy, hatred, love, laughter, sadness, for even some of the most basic emotions are lost to him. He starts thinking about Hell, and how much of a blessing it would be to be down there, for then he’d at least feel his burning flesh, he could see his surroundings, the screams and wailing of the damned, and could see the torturer skinning him alive, he could feel the skin peeling from his bones, such a heavenly sensation when compared to what he’s been dealt. For at least then there’d be something, he could feel something The only thing he has left in this world is his thoughts and his memories, but even they’ve become vague. He’d feel terrified if he could, but now he only feels empty. But then, he begins to feel something, like a thud, or a beat in his choice, in this moment he’d cry if he could, but it didn’t end, it got stronger and stronger, he could feel something, he felt energised, strong, powerful. Ecstatic, he lets it all out in one go. And then, in the flash before him, stars, planets, moons, rocks, and then, as he descends upon one planet, he notices something and picks it up. He looks at it, and gets on his knees, feeling an insurmountable number of tears well up, for in his hand, was a microbe. Life itself, in his world, in his universe, all to be shaped by him.

I think that's why the Herobrine myth was so effective on younger kids like myself at the time, once you accepted that you were completely alone in these worlds, this myth blows up and subconsciously plants the idea that maybe you weren't alone after all lmao. We don't play together as much like we used to but popping in and creating something new like a pixel art or a new house and seeing my friend's creations is so fun to see every week is something new. Sometimes when we pop in together at the same time its always a fun experience to mine together and go find a pillager outpost and fight them and get raided.

I remember traveling across Canada between grandparents and parents, all the way to hospitals for my illness, having to give up my online friends and all I did was play Minecraft, alone. On this same world... I built castles over ravines, learnt how to give myself command blocks so I could set TP's. Still built a railroad system. But at the end all I remember was my uncle watching me fish and sad to me in response to something I said. " I can see why no one fishes in this game, it seems boring" meanwhile, I was thinking " I need to eat somehow..." Not realizing how empty I assured I'd be as an adult.

The video clips were very well put together and the audio changes were great! I love this video and cannot wait for what more you'll be publishing in the future! Amazing work!

Back when I used to play the game, I hated multiplayer because other players would kill/troll me, get in my way or get items I wanted/need before I get to it. So I tended to play single mode, but the more I played, the more I realized how lonely the game is when playing by yourself. So I tried playing multiplayer more, but it didn’t get any better for me. So I eventually stopped playing Minecraft on a bad note.

Well, I would not say that Villagers can't be protected. They have their own language we can't understand, and perhaps off screen over generations they build in their own way. But its true that no one can create like Steve can. No one can see the world and brave its depths like they can.

I remember playing Minecraft for the first time on peaceful. I still put iron doors on my house since it was so terrifying for a 9-or-so year old, to watch the sin set in an alien world. When turned on mobs, I used to play with stone tools for the longest time, since I was too scared to go to the caves. Over time, I've learned to overcome my fears and I would say it made me a better person, but damn, it was a whole different game than it is nowadays. Now that I think about it, I built an iron farm years before I got my first diamonds in the game. I don't really play singleplayer anymore and haven't for many, many years, it still feels uncanny even for a 20 y/o. Honestly I've yet to play a horror game that would get close to Minecraft in the early 2010s.

Minecraft is so much like real life and thus teaches you so many lessions. Questioning what to do when being dropped into a foreign world without a goal and finding a purpose is just a simple simulation of life. Of course even more so when playing together with others. I have learnt so much about Social interaction from this Game and by all things like griefing and fighting and sharing and cooperating and all the ways you can interact, is so much like society.

When I was young, about six or seven, I would play single player Minecraft. I would build houses, movie theaters, restaurants, grocery stores, roller coasters, castles, whatever I could think of. I could do whatever I wanted to, yet I was sad the whole time. I remember one time, I was playing single player alone in my room, and I started crying just because of how lonely and unnerved I felt. I didn’t get it though, I could watch other people play Minecraft and I wouldn’t feel unnerved or uncomfortable at all. But now, playing for myself, I felt like I was the only person in the world. It’s fucking scary - I’ll just stick to my Minecraft let’s-plays, *thank you.*

I remember playing on my iPad , but even tho I was small it was unnerving seeing me building a house at 2 am and just hear noises on minecraft. I was terrified of mining, but after some time it didn’t become scary, and I felt really alone playing it. I played some years later at a friends house on Xbox 360. When you play minecraft solo it’s unnerving, but also as the video said really lonely, that’s why I always play with friends
