How horses interpret the world differently on their left and right sides, and why and increased preference for putting you on the left could mean your horse is feeling stressed

1:20 worth mentioning, that left/right-handedness in chimps is closer to 50/50 than it is in humans, too. I don't think I've heard whether they've decided this is due to genetic or social differences though. (Since we do make a habit of making all our tools for right-handers and also encourage children to write with their right hand even when they're clearly left-handed or ambi-dextrous.) Very interesting, though! I guess this is why we usually mount horses on the left. Someone long ago noticed that was just easier with most horses, and here we are!

You might want to research right side birth trauma in horses. Was first written about in the 1940s.

Well explained and super interesting. I shall share with people I know. Give it time to grow, dont give up. Warwick Shiller has grown immensely this past year so his posting ways apparently fit us horse people. Huge respect for what you do. Thank you

Is this why so many OTTBs seem to have a problem with their right canter when they first get started under a slightly heavier saddle? There's just so much change in routine and training that's happening all at once, and many thoroughbreds are taken off the track at a fairly young age due to some kind of mental health/stress related issue. It's not necessarily that the horse can't run, but that they can't handle the stress of it all.
