Oh man I can relate to your story in so many ways! In 1996 thousands of miles south there was a boy in Peru using this same game to learn a new language, I remember playing it and using the dictionary for some key words... slow process, but to me it was the best way to start, my early basic vocabulary had words not so useful like "sword", "armor" or "mushroom"... but at least it was a start! This is my favorite SNES game and favorite in the Super Mario franchise! Thanks for sharing your story, you have a new subscriber here!

I played the hell outta this game as a kid. just found it so fascinating. it was my first rpg and first exposure to turn based combat (even before pokemon). the world, all the characters living in it, and the storytelling blew 7yo me away. think I ultimately prefer the first 2 Paper Mario's, but love that we're getting a remake.

Awesome story man. This is why video games are so amazing for many different types of people. While I don’t think I grew up with any learning disabilities I did struggle a lot with school and reading. Even now reading isn’t my strongest attribute. However video games are what got me reading through my youth. Games like Zelda, Pokémon and mega man battle network locked my focus in and I really took the time to try to understand the story and progress through the games which imo seriously helped my reading skills growing up. Found your channel yesterday and since then have been watching all your videos. Fantastic work can’t wait to see what else is coming! Also, good luck on your Japanese studies! (Japanese major myself and now living in Japan! All thanks in part to the influence from many of my favorite games I assume haha)

Thanks for watching my other content as well haha. ☺️ I just subbed to your channel. Always enjoy Japan content. You are very lucky. I've wanted to move to Japan my whole life. I have a huge passion and emotional attachment for Japan. The studying is going ok lol I stop a lot because it gets difficult being the only one you know learning the language. But my wife and I are visiting Japan next month! So I'm back on studying lol.

@@Daxle Of course! Same here! I fully believe through one’s passions it’s possible to learn anything really if done right. I strongly believe in games for that as well as for language learning as a fun way to be motivated as well as take in more information without realizing it. Idk how many times I asked my dad what a word meant or looked it up during some RPG gaming sessions 🤷🏼‍♂️😅 Thank you so much!! Hope you’ll enjoy the videos I have coming up soon. 😁🍄 🎮 No way! Same here. Growing up I always had a passion for japan and all things from it it seems 🤔 I’ve been out here for a year now after visiting a few times. Awesome!! Are you going to make some content in Japan too? Tokyo? I’m so excited Japans borders are open so people can come here again. 🇯🇵 You got this 😎👍 I started with Genki as well and by the end of the second book I was starting to feel pretty confident when traveling to japan. Not having anyone to speak with can be a struggle for sure. When i started I was trying to reach out and use Japanese as much as I could with natives either online or in person which improved my speech but I have also slowed my kanji studying down a lot in the past 2 years 😅 lately my reading practice has been super Mario 64 in Japanese lol

Yes I have some content planned. Not sure how I want to do it yet maybe a mix of vlog/narrative. But also it's out vacation so not gonna spend it all filming haha. I can't wait to raid some hard offs haha. I want all the Japanese games and consoles I can get lol. I started with japanesepod101 and then Human Japanese, genki, and akidroid. I tried an online college course but hated doing that online. I feel more comfortable in person for whatever reason. But my current level is very basic. I can do ok as a tourist I think?

@Daxle
@Daxle Жыл бұрын
What are some of those games, and what brings you back to them?
@westonmeyer3110
@westonmeyer3110 Жыл бұрын
@@Daxle Well, I should clarify and say that I do have a favorite game but the other games are just as special despite not being as fun to me. My favorite game of all time is Tales of Legendia with probably the best video game soundtrack of all time, a great cast of characters with great chemistry, very good gameplay for the time(classic 2D Tales combat) and just the right difficulty for someone who was relatively new to action RPGs. I will never forget when my grandmother said she would get the game for me for cleaning her house(she was very disabled physically)and not only did she allow me to get the game before I even started but she even allowed me to start it before I started cleaning because she was that selfless. My brother had Tales of Symphonia for his Gamecube so I knew what Tales games were but I was always the 2nd player and didn’t get to do much and didn’t get fully immersed in that game(which is the key to enjoying RPGs obviously), but playing by myself in a similar game was a completely different experience that I liked a lot more and Legendia amazed me at nearly every turn. Dragon Warrior 7 is one of my favorites along with the entire series for being my RPG comfort food. Whenever I was stuck in another game or series or just didn’t know what I wanted to play I could always pick up a Dragon Warrior/Quest game and grind some more levels or gold. I also have some funny memories with my grandmother when I was playing Dragon Warrior games. Kingdom Hearts 1 was my first ever action rpg and the first game I played as a teenager and it was a very strange game featuring the classic Disney of my childhood, the Final Fantasy characters I had just started to appreciate and the original characters who were going through the same changes I was as young teenagers or pre-teens. It felt like I was truly on the same journey as Sora in a way and that was weird to me because I didn’t really feel like I was supposed to connect with video games and their characters that strongly. Just before I got Kingdom Hearts I had completed Final Fantasy X and that was the first time I cried while playing a video game and it felt wrong at that point in my life despite how much time and energy I put into beating FFX. Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume is such an awesome and underrated game and it was also considered extremely hard and off-putting to a lot of people because of its difficulty and I didn’t really play hard games in 2008, but 2008 was also the year I was going to college so I knew I couldn’t run away from challenges anymore and so I pushed through the game’s 3 endings to unlock the special dungeon without even understanding half of the game’s mechanics while people on game forums were rage quitting. 2008 was the year when I conquered pretty much all of my major fears and Covenant of the Plume was what helped me to continue that progress through the summer, even giving me the confidence to go for championship qualifying times on my last year on my neighborhood swim team despite having the worst body for swimming and having a fear of drowning all the way into my teenage years. I could go on and on A lot of my favorite games or most memorable games in my collection have a memory tie-in with my grandmother. I didn’t have a lot of friends growing up, so when I did something cool in a game and I just had to tell someone, I would tell her because she wouldn’t judge me for committing so much time to something that won’t contribute to my future in any especially meaningful way. She never played a single video game in her life but she always listened to what I had to say about them and that made a lot of my games timeless.

(16:38) My favorite video game and really media of all has to be MOTHER 1/EarthBound Beginnings. I grew up on the mid 2000s - early 2010s internet where a little website called Newgrounds was the hip place to get your daily does of entertainment. Anyone who knows anything about Newgrounds knows about tons flash animations and parodies of video games especially Nintendo video games. There was a specific flash animation (or I guess in this case I should say animations) that I got me interested in the MOTHER series. It was a flash animation by the title of "NiN10Doh!", the flash animation had a series of animations about several Nintendo game franchises, most of which I knew and recognize, but then when a animation about MOTHER 2 popped and I had no idea what game the animation was about it fed my curiosity. The only thing I recognized about the animation was the red capped character as I seen him in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Through a few google searches I discovered the game "EarthBound." I decided I might as well play the game so I downloaded what ever the top search was at the time for a SNES emulators and a ROM to "EarthBound" and booted up the game on my crappy windows xp laptop. Back then on my first playthrough of the game I never even manage to get past Franky before I decided to call it quits. I wasn't use the RPG mechanics, plus back then I hated games with "too many words" and I tended to skip through long dialogue skipping lots of story in some games and not understanding what I had to do in certain parts of games cause I would skip through tips and instructions. Sometime later in life though when I was around 9 or 10 I decided to give EarthBound another chance as the game was announced for Wii U and I was now a little older so understood a thing called patience now. On that 2nd playthrough I completed the game all the way through to the end. MOTHER 2 instantly became my favorite game of all time. A bit later after I completed MOTHER 2 is when I discovered that "EarthBound" was actually a sequel to a game that was never officially released in America. I did my research a discovered MOTHER 1 known back by fans as "EarthBound Zero." I decided to play MOTHER 1 thinking that surely the prequel to this amazing game will just as amazing and oh boy was I right about that. If I were to explain everything that I loved about MOTHER 1 this comment would be like 20 paragraphs long lol, but what I will say is that MOTHER 1 has essentially everything people love about MOTHER 2 and more. I have made a reddit post in the past explaining why I personally find MOTHER 1 is a amazing game so I might as well link it here for anyone who is interested to check out and read(www.reddit.com/r/earthbound/comments/sbnyuy/why_mother_1_earthbound_beginnings_is_amazing/) This was an amazing video btw, so much so that it inspired me to make to long comment lol. My relationship with SMRPG is interesting... When I was about 12 or so I had an emulator on my tablet with some SNES games pre-downloaded. I remember seeing the box art (the menu was like NSO) and thinking "A Mario game I've never heard of? I outta try it!" And boy howdy. I still temeber seeing the opening with Peach in the flower garden and realizing this was unlike any Mario game I'd ever played. I kept playing the game as much as I could over the next week or so, but one problem: The emulator had a layering issue. So when I got to the forest maze to look for Geno, the shadows completely blocked the portion of screen I needed to see and I wasn't able to progress. I had no way of playing the game other wise because we didn't have a wii U and Super NES titles were restricted to the "New" 3ds (One of the stupidest things Nintendo did at that time). So when I saw the announcement for the remake, I just had a big smile on my face because now I could finish this gem. It still pains me that I got just enough of a taste to be hooked and then was gatekept until now.

That game for me was definitely Pokémon Black 2. Growing up in Norway, most things like games weren't translated, because basically everyone knows English anyways, but it was a big struggle for me, so I definitely know how you felt, I also had some minor struggles reading when I was younger, and still don't really read much in my spare time (mostly because I just don't have the concentration for it) But Pokémon Black 2 was my first ever Pokémon game, and I was so excited when I got it, because I loved Pokémon from the cards and anime, and I really wanted to play the games and now I finally could! Even if I could barely understand what the characters were saying, it is what got me to start watching youtube videos, which were obviously mainly in english, and that's how I started improving my english! I learned really quickly after that, and I will always love that game!

Wow thank you for sharing that. It's wonderful how a video game can help you learn or change your perspective on things even though that wasn't the games initial purpose. My favorite game is Grandia. Mainly because of the story and how it is not all 100% gloom and doom save the world straight out of the gate.

I love Celeste! The only game to ever make me tear up. Really helped with my anxiety. That part with the feather was a big impact.

That's a challenge! Lol good luck. I think the only down side to speed running that game is you don't get to hear the full tracks lol

How do you think this remake will be perceived by the Z00mer generation? I mean because you have to remember the 1990s was a different time and there are certain jokes and jargon that the newer generation won't get because of the cultural and social differences.

This is a great question. I've been thinking about this, too. First off, I think Mallow with his chubby bouncing cheeks will be the new hotness. Mallow fans everywhere lol. I think a lot of younger players will be a little confused by the characters and design because they didn't grow up with Mario looking different from game to game. They're mostly use too him looking the same since the DS. I predict that Nintendo will definitely change the jokes and dialog a bit to be more current, but I hope they keep the Bruce Lee reference. Whatever happens I'm so happy that this game is now going to be a part of a new generation. And back in everyone's minds

As a zoomer, I think we’re going to love it. A lot of us will have grown up with the Mario and Luigi series, which is quite similar to Mario RPG in terms of writing. The only thing that I can think would drive us away from the remake is the stubby little Mario design. After watching the trailer with some of my friends, they, who are very much not Nintendo gamers, commented on the fact that Mario’s stumpy design wasn’t rubbing off on them too well and it may be a turn off for them. I don’t think most other zoomers will care though. Most of my more Nintendo oriented friends loved the trailer and are excited, since they didn’t grow up with it. I know I’m going to love it. I used to play the hell out of that game (well, a short bit of it. I was too scared of Booster to get past his little bit of the game lol), so getting to re play it (as a not scared 16 year old) is going to be a blast, especially with all the touch ups!
