Number 16 is so important. I was a 24 handicap and recently started to play hickory golf clubs. I can't recommend this enough. It forces you to swing smooth and easy (otherwise you risk breaking them). The effect this had on my modern gam was massive. I'm now a 19 handicap and falling. I'm playing courses I've never played before and shooting low 90s to mid 80s by swinging smooth. It's helped a lot.

13:58 Another gem! “Inside 100 you can be as good as a pro golfer. You don’t need strength you don’t need brute force, you need finesse and practice”. THIS IS THE BEST ADVICE FOR US WEEKEND GOLFERS!! My point is: we don’t play enough. Period. We don’t have the time to practice. Period. If you can get it around the green in 2-3 shots you can play great golf by working on that short game. All you need is 20 ft on grass at a park or your side yard or your back yard and you can practice chipping and pitching.

The biggest amateur mistake is not thinking. Too many of us play the same course and use the same clubs every time. Few of use experiment the clubs to see what the alternatives might be. Almost no one changes the tee choice. I recommend changing the tee choice all the time because different tees gives you different looks at the course and should force you to think of different options. High handicappers sleep walk thru a round, giving no thought to club selection, lie, or anything else. An errant ball is always a bad shot, not poor club selection, aiming at the hole when you shouldn’t,etc. Not thinking produces bad shots.

THIS! THIS. IS. THE. VIDEO. I absolutely relate to so many of these points, the cut and paste shot, the trying to hit it as far as possible on a par 5 second shot. Playa has transformed my game, not through swing techniques, but through thoughts. The most important lesson I every got, a long time ago from our Playa in Chief, was 'how good is it being on a golf course with mates, rather than working?' It's the best life.

@@marvinbluedorn3321I am also in my second year playing, am off a 12 handicap. Shot an 84 today because I couldn't putt for shit on our hollow tined greens 😤. The difference between a sub 90 and low 80 round is such a low margin, I had 5 birdie putts today and ended up with 5's on a few of them, snap hooked my driver on one of the par 5's, 3 off the tee for a 7. The worst thing you can do in golf is to chase a particular score, you have to play and just let it happen, as soon as you know you're about to score well it seems to go to pieces! I am a much longer hitter than my playing partners, being 30 years younger helps 😂, it can be painful to hit it 80 yards further off the tee and still end up with the same score, but it just goes to show that no matter how you get there you've got to keep it together on that green. Best advice I would give to someone trying to break 90 is to work exclusively on your short game, being able to square the club face is A1 in this game, the amount of people who align right and hit with an open face swinging left must be incredibly high, I did the same thing until I realised what was happening. Hitting punch shots to start with will teach you how to square the face at impact, once you've got that down your scores will start to tumble. Good luck for the future 👌

I gave swing tweaks a try after a particularly bad round and I kid you not a week later I shot a 91 and have consistently broken 100 several times. That’s great progress. I’m a little over 2 years into playing and am around a 12 on my home course. Granted it’s only 6400 yds, course rating 71.8/128 slope. Pretty sure that’s on the easier side of things. But it’s a suburban neighborhood course so it’s very narrow, tree lined and greens are small and protected. Was built in the late 1950s so greens have a lot of slope in areas. I swear hole 1 is at 5-6% slope in areas. Anyway, hope you’re enjoying yourself with the game as much as I am! All the best from Long Island, NY!

it's wild to me how much I've learned from Matt and adjusted my game to it, even though I'm improving. For example, the discussion of the ball going right->left or left->right on uphill/downhill slopes. Because he mentioned that, I've learned that actually doesn't apply to my swing. Whenever I'm on either of those slopes, my shots go straight as an arrow. But, because I've watched enough videos and he's called it out. I know to understand that my shots go straight in those scenarios.

Course management was my top focus this year. Dont care about scores, just play smart. I learned that playing partners are the worst for that. Best rounds i had were either solo, or playing with the randoms i got grouped up with due to no expectations. But when playing with friends or regular golf partners, i learned that the pressure of self expectations and "distance comparisons" become all to real. Golf truely is a mental game.

Once in the rough from 220 he pulled out the 3 wood. I asked him if he can reach with it and he said no. I suggested he play it 110-110 yards. He hit the 3 wood 50 yards, and still in the rough.

Having watched hours & hours of KZbin golf "educational" content for the last 6 weeks, shooting +19 & +22 over my local front 9 the last few days I found this video last night, implemented the tips. Played 18 holes today. Shot 88. 88. Can't beleive it tbh, 3 putts finished within an inch, hit a 50foot putt, maybe a fluke, but I was 100% aiming at the hole and it only saved a par, but still, was awesome. 2 bump and runs lipped the cup. Not trying to get the green in 2 was such a massive change, but ultimately actually got me so much closer, or put me in a much better position when I did get on the green. My 7/9i are my best clubs to hit. So utilising these put me in much better positions. Sacked off my 3H ans 3W as I just can't hit them, stuck to a 3/5i if I needed a little more distance or to keep the ball lower. (I've only got odd number irons, as I've only just started and built a bag from Facebook MP) All my other full rounds finished at 101, 100, 102, 101 so I knew I could break 100 on a good day. But taking all these tips on board helped dramatically today. Already counting the days till my next 18.

You are so right. Everything is pitching, chipping, and putting for us hackers. My daughter is doing junior golf lessons using the Operation 36 model, and when they go out to the course the "tee box" is setup 25 yards from the hole. It stays there until they can shoot 36 or better over 9 holes. The tee box then moves back incrementally every time they can successfully shoot 36 or better from the designated spot.

I’ve been playing consistently for about a year and a half now, I played Saturday and shot my best score ever and it all started last week when I went to the driving range, typically at the range I just get a bucket of balls and swing away but this time I went there with a plan, before every shot I backed off and approached it like I was on the course. I really concentrated on my setup and aim and I could tell it was making a big difference. I took this same approach to my warmup session and then the second thing I did was something you talked about, when it was very unlikely I could make it to the green I didn’t try to get as close as possible but instead used a club I was confident in and layed up to a shot that I had a good chance of making it to the green with. These two things allowed me to shoot a score about ten strokes lower than I usually do. I’m so excited now I was starting to get really frustrated with my game but now I have the passion back. Oh and I have watched several of your videos now and really like them so I finally subscribed to your channel.
