tekken players look at things so black and white and it gets very grating. heat is in my opinion a very very flawed mechanic but it isnt inherently bad either. personally id like it more if heat burst wasnt so good, heat smashes are pretty unbalanced (some of them giving guranteed 50/50s on block) and heat dash should just reset to neutral. there is just really extremely little risk to using heat in general and i think if that was changed some id like it more. i think its also exacerbated by how stale the game is atm with so few balance changes in a whole year
@waldenio1

I think the negativity around the mechanic is more centered around balance and less about the design like you said. I already see people in the comments who clearly can’t see the difference between balance and design.
@UILazarus

@@waldenio1 absolutely! I think it’s hard for people who have been a fan of the tekken franchise for a while and I do understand. The heat system brought with it a large amount of changes to Tekken too, like such as chip damage and strong rages arts so I think people see things they don’t like and tend to point the finger and blame Heat

My main issue with heat is once it’s activated. Your main goal is to completely pressure your opponent as much as you can to deal as much chip damage or hard hitting combos. And then it becomes the same game plan for every character. Once you’re in the heat state everyone essentially plays the same way. I still think it’s decently cool tho
@Fleez311
@Fleez311 4 күн бұрын
More doesn't always mean better; the sole purpose of heat is to discourage defense via forcing the opponent into an effortless mixup or 50/50, or having every attack do chip damage on block. There's an inherent problem with heat as that's the intended design behind it, especially when you consider the scuffed backdashes that make it harder to create a whiff to mitigate a scenario where you're getting overwhelmed by heat, it's all apart of the dev's decision to make the game more aggressive and not favor defensive play. It’s overall just not a good mechanic, only unique thing about heat is Kazuya temporarily turning into Devil Kazuya.
@jakesteel90
@jakesteel90 3 күн бұрын
Yea dealing with constant 50/50 after 50/50 makes me roll my eyes cause they want you to be more aggressive but I’m literally just bored waiting for my opponent to stop having frame advantage
@dippy817
@dippy817 2 күн бұрын
bruh, Devil Kaz is whack lmao, fuck that annoying ass "FUKITBOE" panic shit, and Devil Fist launching. also, you're misunderstanding what exactly is creating the endless mixups, which is the plus frames Heat generates, through Heat Dash and Heat supers. those fucking things need to be nuked from orbit, because +5 Heat Dash, ON BLOCK, pushing you to the wall, and then being forced to pick between the mid, or high/low is cancerous. but Heat as a whole... nah, you're overestimating it a lot, because defense is still king in Tekken 8, don't get it twisted. solid blocking, good punishment for whiffs/blocks, appropriate stepping/walking, and a solid KBD will still carry way harder, than abusing your character's new, obnoxious super buttons.
@Fleez311
@Fleez311 2 күн бұрын
@@dippy817 im saying devil Kazuya is unique because the moves that he gets aren’t just plus frame fodder like most characters and are pretty cool when you consider the lore. Also devil fist launching in heat is a heat issue not something exclusive to Kazuya. Defense obviously is still important but it has been nerfed significantly from previous games, KBD is not as useful anymore since they nerfed the amount of space it covers which makes it harder to create a whiff and get out of pressure, guard breaks, like I said before, heat literally discourages you from blocking due to every attack doing chip damage, and despite the side step buff so many strings unnecessarily track making the buff almost unnoticeable.

Yeah, it’s crazy how Capcom and Bandai Namco seem to be on the same wavelength with their fighting games. Every time a new Street Fighter or Tekken drops, there are always similar mechanics, whether it's new control schemes, movement changes, or even gameplay pacing. It could be a coincidence, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re subtly influencing each other. Now, a Sega, Capcom, and Bandai Namco crossover fighter? That would be insane. Imagine a game that lets you switch between 2D and 3D fighting styles-so you could play with Street Fighter's classic footsies, Tekken's movement depth, or Virtua Fighter's technical precision. A hybrid system where players could toggle between 2.5D and full 3D stages would make it even more dynamic. And if they brought in characters from each company’s history? Ryu vs. Jin Kazama vs. Akira Yuki, with guest fighters like Dante or Kazuya in a Power Stone-style mode? That would be legendary. It might be a licensing nightmare, but if they pulled it off, it could be the ultimate dream fighter. Would you prefer it to be tag-based like Marvel vs. Capcom, or more of a one-on-one system like Tekken?

most teken 8 'fans' would disagree... but i think it's fine - just needs some tuning. I think mutch of the blowback is because they just introduced so many 'artificial' mechanics at once. T7 you had claudio who had and install (ignoring the 2d characters - as they are surly not coming back)... now it feels almost every character has one, plus heat, plus rage... well i like T8 a ton, i think it's fresh and fun

I believe that when you enter heat, you should gain strengths and flaws that accentuate your character's identity. For example with Kazuya, you could either design him to be an even more high risk, high reward character (give him even worse frames but give him a lot more damage), or you could make it so that a lot/all of his unsafe moves become safe (still negative frames) all of a sudden (df2, db4, db1), but he now he has really bad tracking and you can sidestep him with ease. I'll parrot TMM too, by saying the heat timer should be used up even when you enter the combo state, and that the heat timer itself should be shortened a bit (to like 8 seconds perhaps). Heat shouldn't be a state you enter where you become a less flawed version of your character, but instead your character becomes an even more uncompromising version of themselves or they get their flaws omitted whilst getting *slightly* crippled in other areas. In a nutshell, I think it would be better if you gained crazy strengths that mitigate your character's flaws but in turn you gain some other flaws that make it more balanced for the opponent to go against.

@@LikeADamnFIDDLE Heat definitely last too long in some cases I agree, I think it’s a combination of that + the fact you can still heat smash/heat dash at 1% heat feels a bit much. I think you could absolutely do something like that. A good example is Devil Jin imo, in heat he gets access to some scary non punishable mid launchers he sorely lacks without heat, covering his weakness but maybe they lose their tracking

What i like about heat - Recoverable health for heat engagers - +five for heat dash on block gives a lot of offensive options - Cool animations that dont get old Dont like - -you gain health for attacking even when its blocked, and the chip damage is massive sometimes its as much as a small combo (like ravens heat) -puts defenders in situations where they only have 1 or 2 options - heat smash should be the same damage for every character (unless its a low) - no wall break for heat smashes absolutely dumb idea - timer shouldnt freeze during combos it has too much going for it to potentially last a whole round I do love the heat mechanic tho i thinks it makes the game fun but makes the game SUPER volatile like you can perfect your opponent one round then get perfected back the next round too

@ I think it makes the game over all boring. It isn’t fun to watch for me. Believe it or not, the tense spacing and explosive volatility of tekken 7 was hype for me. That auto combo extender and turn stealing mechanic is just dull to me. When someone is in heat you just don’t get to really do much. It doesn’t add anything meaningful to the game in my opinion. I know what it does to the gameplay and how each player approaches it but I find that boring. I think rage drive was more interesting.

There’s between having potential and actually being robust and well implemented. Cannot agree with this take, separating its design and balance is a bit silly. Fighting games are inherently competitive by nature thus balance being a huge course of consideration in its design. To me heat feels like a poorly implemented v trigger.
@UILazarus
@UILazarus 3 күн бұрын
@@ourbeautifulfantasia001 I appreciate your opinion, if the only thing you value from fighting games is the competitive aspect then it’s hard to separate balance and design. My argument here is that a well designed mechanic is able to be balanced easily, if you tell me something that in your opinion is “unbalanced” I would be able to suggest how to make it “balanced” without changing anything fundamental to the design of heat. The same cannot be said for other fighting game mechanics with less good design. V triggers are another great example of a mechanic with good design but “bad” balancing.
