Termites are known as "silent destroyers," but on top of that, they've got a creepy trait. These 130-million-year-old insects lick their queen termites to death. What's behind this odd termite death ritual? And how do termite colonies get so big?

@AnnaMorimoto
@AnnaMorimoto 2 жыл бұрын
We build houses out of wood in Japan. I'm guessing wood is less likely to crush and kill you if an earthquake hits. It's flexible, and can be fit together like puzzle pieces, so that it's less likely to get destroyed in an earthquake. In the off chance that the house doesn't hold, wood is light weight, less likely to crush you. Wood absorbs and releases moisture, which makes living in wooden houses quite comfortable, especially in humid weather like Japanese summers. Wood is also a fairly cheap and easily processed construction material. It's true we face termites, but parts can be easily replaced in wooden houses.
@christopherfeatherley
@christopherfeatherley 2 жыл бұрын
@@yeahrightok.3975 If you ever see a house being built, wood is the standard--and only really--material used in the boning. Brick and concrete houses use wood, too, as a structural support, in the event of hurricanes or earthquakes. Skyscrapers tend to use metal boning, however, are located in areas in which weather/earthquakes aren't as severe. You also have to consider metal boning is extreme expensive, and are reserved for large buildings that can afford it. Otherwise, wood is an affordable material, which offers protection as well insulation. Every item has it's flaws and scarcity. Aside from vulnerability from molding and termites, wood is used in almost every house you lived in
@an8thdimensionalbeing142
@an8thdimensionalbeing142 2 жыл бұрын
@@yeahrightok.3975 wood is cheaper, lighter, and easily repaired. specifically in places like the midwestern and southern US most houses are made of wood because of the stormy seasons. a hurricane will topple a brick house just as easily as a wood one, so it makes more sense to use wood as a building material to cut down on costs in the event of a destructive natural disaster. termites are also not a constant issue, so the continued use of wood isnt impeded by termite colonies enough to make it not worth building with.

Termidor works best with termites. Especially formosan termites. Sentricon wood monitoring stations and then when activity is found in-ground stations with hexo florimon tubes put into the ground stations. Also works. But Termidor works the best as a perimeter spray or anywhere termites are detected. So you do not have to have your house necessarily tented. Unless you have a bad drywood termite problem. Drywood termites will leave little tiny pellets the size of coffee grounds. Or sometimes you will notice little tiny holes in the wood. A good walk around the home should determine if you have any wood to soil contact. Also make sure that dirt and soil around your house is not above the foundation line. concrete or concrete block Holmes can even be a problem with wooden furring strips. Always be aware that formosan termites can eat their way all the way up into the attic or even build mud tubes all the way up to the Attic mud tubes is a protective layer of mud made into a tube form the termites like to use as passageways. Very common for these tubes to go all the way up to the Attic or into the interior wall studs usually constructed of wood. Anytime you see what appears to be mud tubes going up the exterior walls or even interior walls is a good sign that you have formosan termites coming up from the ground. If you live in an area that has constant damp soil or poor drainage. You maybe at a much higher risk of having termites especially formosan termites. Termites can destroy a brand new house just as easily as they can destroy an older house. Most common mistake people make is they think when they buy termite treated wood that they are safe against termites however unfortunately that is not necessarily the case. Especially if the ends of the wood have been cut off the termite protection is no longer there termite treated wood only last so long with termite prevention. Never use wooden planter boxes on the ground never put wood in the ground especially don't do it near your house this includes even Cypress fences or wooden fences. It is basically like putting out bait for termites. If you have dead trees or dead roots or even Fallen branches make sure that they are cleared away right away before they attract termites. Although concrete block and concrete homes usually cost a little bit more than wooden homes it is highly advisable to have your home made out of concrete or concrete block. Especially if you live in a termite known prone area. Such as Florida Georgia South Carolina Tennessee Alabama Mississippi termites can be found all across the nation even in California but they are very prevalent in Florida. Both formosan and drywood termites same thing with carpenter ants which can be quite destructive as well. Most common mistake people make when doing landscaping around their house is having the soil too high around their house above the foundation line. Although Landscaping looks nice Landscaping done incorrectly might be a huge invitation for formosan termites to invade your home without being detected easily. Always keep the soil below the foundation line at least 4 to 6 inches minimum of the actual concrete Foundation showing so that you can clearly see the concrete Foundation look out for mud tubes if you see mud tubes then you know you have formosan termites if mud termite tubes are found the entire perimeter of the home should be treated right away. If you have a wooden foundation or a crawl space make sure that there is no wood to soil contact. Even wooden stakes in the ground when concrete is poured can also be an invitation for termites. Always try never to have wood to soil contact. Even if it's termite treated wood.

Interesting… but I think this vid is missing a key part of the story. Some might be here thinking, “Well why do the workers need to eat the Queen if the whole colony is going to die with her? Thing is that’s not the case necessarily. Unlike ants, Termite queens can do Pathogenesis to lay a cloned version of herself, and also males don’t die- they become kings. So the king can mate with the queen’s clone to make backup versions of herself already supplied with the same sperm. Some species probably also have backup plans for the king, like bringing them in from outside. So the colony itself could potentially be immortal, living well beyond the life of one queen.
@pauljs75

The king termites are even visible in this video's footage. Those are the long ones without the big heads like that of guards that stay in close proximity to the queen termite.
