Tesla's cars are some of the most impressive electric cars available today. Tesla not only broke the range barrier for EVs, it also improved the performance of an electric car considerably. Even though electric motors are inherently quick, the Model S Performance seamlessly blends software and engineering to deliver that power to the wheels more efficiently than any other production car.

This video has so many flaws. Here's a few: The batrery size measured in kWh is not the energy density of the battery! It is the amount of energy the battery can store aka capacity. Power density is also irrelevant for the performance of the car, it's the overall power of the battery that's important. For example a phone battery has pretty much the same energy density and power density as a electric car battery, but it's power and energy are obviously not the same. And efficiency does not affect the power the car produces at the wheel so it's not a factor. The only two reasons electric cars accelerate so fast is A: instant torque and B: precise torque vectoring.
@Poxenium

@kuriakosejim8696 4 жыл бұрын
Umm your comment is the one with flaws bro 1.) breaking news: efficiency DOES matter in the case of acceleration, genius. The lack of extra moving parts like gears or a clutch most definitely helps an electric car get to a certain speed (60mph, in this case) MUCH faster. With those extra moving parts and not to mention the time to shift gears, it would take longer to reach the said speed. By efficiency, they mean very less energy wasted. And that definitely matters. 2.) the overall power capacity of a battery affects its range, not it’s speed. If that was the case, then electric cars will start to reduce in speed in proportion to reducing charge. But that’s clearly not the case cuz a tesla at 100% and one at 50% charge are pretty much equally fast. 3.) you spelt battery wrong lol
@ekaa.3189
@ekaa.3189 4 жыл бұрын
Actually overall power of the battery means little. What is more important to efficiency and speed of acceleration is the effective internal resistance in the battery pack, wires, motor controller, and motor. Higher resistance to electron flow reduces maximum power able to be utilized. Lower the resistance and more power can be pushed through the system allowing faster acceleration and greater range for a given battery pack.

@BBB H ehm maybe you wanna get your facts right: Tesla battery cells currently feature an energy density of 250 Wh/kg or 0.9 MJ/kg. Gasoline has 46 MJ/kg, not 46,000. So the actual factor is about 50. With an estimated average efficiency advantage of factor 4 (EV:80% of energy stored in the battery goes to the wheels, ICE car 20% of gasoline's energy is delivered to the wheels) this advantage is now only a bit over 10x. (And yes, I know that under perfect circumstances a gas engine can get 40% efficiency, but with a lot of idleing and stop'n'go 10% are also possible)

A very important point missed by the video is electronic control systems. Traction control (not stability control) can work way more precisely with electric motors, changing torque multiple hundred to thousands of times per second. This just isn't possible with internal combustion engines on that degree. Especially when launching from a standstill traction control plays a major role in limiting slip and using the traction from the tires the most efficient way possible. Without traction control systems most electrical vehicles (even with much lower torque numbers) would almost instantly loose traction especially on the front axle making those 0-60 times almost impossible.

The real answer is PHASE AMPS. Which in the Model S are 2-2.5x battery amps. It's the difference between almost all electric cars and Tesla. The process by which the motor inverter reduces (bucks down) pack voltage to increase the current of each motor phase. Then on the top end (108 mph plus), Flux weakening is enabled to go beyond prescribed rotor speeds albeit at a sizable efficiency loss and increase stator temps. Plenty of examples of people on the Internet who took vastly slower cars and swapped in a single Tesla LDU and have instant supercar acceleration. No AWD, someone else battery, no traction control etc.

This video is oversimplified to the point it's wrong, but I'll try to explain it so acceleration basically comes down to the force applied divided by mass (there's more like drag, rolling resistance and gradient), but in layman's terms the more power you have and the lighter you are, the quicker you can accelerate. First, energy and power are two separate things, which might help you understand better. The term power actually means energy divided by time, so it means how quickly you can deliver energy. So power density doesn't mean energy density. The video said power density, but went on to show energy density (like 60kWh, 100kWh batteries etc) which confused a lot of viewers. To make it simple, energy refers to range, while power refers to how quickly you can use that energy to cover that range i.e. how quickly your car can go. Energy density is energy per mass or volume, while power density is power per mass or volume. So having a higher power density makes your car lighter or have more power or both, which results in a quicker acceleration. While having a higher energy density means your car has a longer range. TLDR, Power Density is indeed related to acceleration, but the video botched it up by showing the energy capacity of the batteries instead of the power ratings

Faster acceleration sacrifices top speeds, & higher top speeds sacrifices quicker acceleration. It's a big difference. RPM, is Revolutions Per Minute.

Instant torque comes directly from the nature of electric motors vs ICE (which need a transmission to optimize torque delivery). Battery and gasoline are energy sources

Business Insider - in the Battery Graphics slide, you are showing EV battery as a 12v car Battery, this is wrong, MOST EV's today do NOT use a 12v car battery to power the Electric motors , MOST use a Electric Skateboard with LION, LIPO or Pouch batteries.

Tesla is improving so fast that two weeks after this was posted it increased their horsepower to 825. And a gas car with the same rated horsepower only reaches that power at it's peak (like you said) while an electric car has peak power for about 2/3rds it's RPM. I can't remember the exact number, but it's why gas cars are slow until they hit their power band.

The problem with an electric car, it can't stay at a high speed or maximum performance for long as the battery heats up. Unlike a petrol car where it can stay at maximum performance forever.
