Why The 1977-1979 Lincoln Mark V Was The Best 2 door Luxury Car Of The 1970s

Just bought a '79 Mark V Collector's Series with 13,000 miles on it a few months ago. It's definitely not something I'd want to drive every day, park in a crowded parking lot, or race my neighbor in it. BUT - when I want to feel pampered and 'rich' in a 1970s way, this car does the job. That hood ornament looks about a mile away when I'm sitting behind the wheel, and the car just floats on down the road in quiet luxury. Seats are ultra-comfy, and I love the sound from Ford's "Quadrasonic" 8-track quadraphonic player. This is one of a number of '70s cars we own, and it's very unique (and pleasant) in its driving experience. I love its comfort, driving ease (one-finger power steering) and just looking at the car after I park it. It's kind of a rolling work of art, to my eyes.

@@PrivateOfficeVentures Thanks for your response. I haven't driven my Mark V very much in the past year, as it's just a weekend car that I use sparingly. I'm taking it on a 600-mile round trip next month though, so I'm hoping it proves to be reliable and trouble-free for the trip. As for your question about maintenance/parts availability, I'd say it's pretty good still. There may be a few items that are a little challenging to find, but no more so than any other car that's 40+ years old. These cars are known for having ignition control module failures, so I'm told it's a good idea to keep a spare in the trunk. I may buy one before my upcoming trip just to be safe. Also, the power seat switches are "live"/powered all the time even with the key off, and can short out and cause a fire. I'm told that regular cleaning of these parts (to remove corrosion caused by moisture) can reduce the chance of this happening. A great resource for more Mark V info is the Facebook group dedicated to the 1977-1979 Mark V. I had been searching for a low-mileage Mark V for a year and looked through all kinds of online sites for cars (Hemmings, eBay, Auto Trader, etc.) but I actually found my car through the Mark V Facebook group. I remember when the first Mark 5 came out, my grandparents ordered a brand new maroon one with white leather seats, they babied that car like it was a gold mint... My grandmother kept that car all the way up to her death in 1999... It's still only had 30,000 miles on it, however we as a family did sell it because it only got like 12 miles a gallon, it had a big 460 engine under the hood, and we was lucky enough to find an older couple who appreciated it as much as my grandparents

All three of my 79 Marks get about that much, but I fill them up once ever three months or so, so I couldn't care less what the MPG is frankly.

Worked at Lincoln Mercury dealer during these years as a collision repair tech. These are some of the most brilliantly simplified bodies ever done on a car by a manufacturer very easy to do body work on these cars very easy to disassemble. Far more easy than any Cadillac of that time to disassemble to do body repairs. After doing some repairs on one of these cars had leftover door skins and door handles that I adapted to my 67 mustang that flat door handle looked beautiful on the 67 mustang and fit perfectly.

At 19'- 3" you got to love it. My best bud had a 78 Gold Diamond Jubilee in the early 80's. Nice car and he was only around 18-19 yrs old. We had great times cruising in that car. Cops left us alone as it wasn't a pull - over type of car. He kept that car gorgeous and babied it. Just memories but still close friends w/him.

Frank Cannon made me fall in love with the Lincoln Continental. My nan and I loved that show and it was required viewing back in 1971 - 1972. And the car was equipped with a telephone. That was unbelievably cool.

Here's a bit of trivia that'll blow your mind, Conrad was a P51 fighter pilot in WW2. Apparently he gained all that weight after the war because I've never seen any variant of the P51 that he would have fit in, I doubt by the 70's he could have fit in a B29, even the bomb bay.

My Dad was a big guy and he had a brand new cordovan MarkV for 6 months and they stole it from in front of our house and went straight and got a Cartier edition but before those he had 2 town cars so the older guys called him Cannon, my dad , brother and me worked at Wixom assembly in Michigan where they were built

@@SpockvsMcCoy In those days silver exteriors and wine interiors were very popular. The designer series cars such as Bill Blass Edition which is the dark blue and white tutone with white convertible style roof, the Cartier edition which was a light fawn, navy, and chamois was very popular then. We had light jade metallic and dark jade metallic but they were not that popular. There was an Emilio Pucci edition in silver. Because it was in Florida the white cars sold well. We did sell black, Cordovan metallic sold well. Dove grey with either gray or maroon interior sold well. There were other colors available of course such as Diamond Jubilee editions in a diamond blue metallic. Also if we ordered enough units at one time you could create unusual combinations such as black and bittersweet or even black and Wedgewood interior. The `77, 78, 79 models had some color overlap, but also those unique to that year. The MK V was about as prestigious a car as you could get back then. Because you could literally watch the gas gauge drop as you drove I usually drove Cougars, T-Birds and Monarch Ghias for demos. Though I did drive some Capris' on occasion and Versaille. There was a black and silver Monarch Ghia package I liked. However, the Monarch and Granadas didn't have 50/50 seats. You either got very separate buckets, the "Flight Bench" seat with center fold-down armrest, or just a bench seat. As much as I liked the Ford products, my favorites then were Chryslers such as LeBaron Medallion coupes, Cordoba and even loaded New Ports. The New Yorker and Imperials had interiors that were over the top with tufting.

I was in HS when these were roaming the streets. My dad always drove a personal luxury car during those days, 73 Grand Prix at the time, traded in on a Tornado but the Mk V & Eldorado were in a league all their own. If any of you guys collect brochures, look closely & you'll notice Tom Selleck as the Mk V model. 78 if memory serves me correctly. These are still so cool even though they are as big as a house.

When you look at what we used to park in our garages, it's amazing how much car you had, those Mark series Lincoln's, as well as the Town Car, those cars are just a head turner, these things floated along the road, it was a car to see, own, & enjoy back in the day, today, not so much!!! Love these cars - when I graduated high school in 1979 I came home after spending the first week of summer at the beach (which was traditional). Pulling in my driveway after driving home from that week my friend Greg pulled up and asked me if I wanted to go to New Jersey with him and hang out with with our mutual friend Mike, who was spending the summer there living with his mom and working for his stepfather who was a real estate developer and owned a commercial construction company. I looked at my mom and reluctantly said I was literally just returning from a week at the beach and didn't know if that was OK. She beamed at me and said, "of course, no problem". I carried my stuff inside, quickly packed another suitcase, showered and changed clothes and climbed into my buddies' car, my mom gave me $700 and $100 for my friend for gas money and we took off for NJ. Upon arrival at my friends house, we pulled in the driveway and saw matching, his and hers Lincoln Continental Mark Vs, one in Bill Blass trim and the other in Cartier trim. Greg and I stayed with Mike for three weeks and we tooled around all over NJ in those marvelous cars, going into Philly, visiting Atlantic City and hitting the tunnels and bridges into Staten Island and beyond into NYC. We listened to The Moody Blues, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and The Who on the incredible Quadraphonic 8 track stereo. Those cars were effortlessly elegant, smooth and powerful to drive and ride in and the fit and finish and craftsmanship were superb. Always a wonderful memory to remember!

I was 19 years old when these epic cars debuted. I had a wash and wax detail business that flourished with these types of vehicles. I took regular care of 2 Mark v's. One was a maroon on maroon beauty with a quarter vinyl roof. The other was a midnight blue hardtop, with which because the owner often traveled, I had very frequent use of the car. The owner once told me someone stopped him and said your car is never ever dirty. My friend in Las Vegas still has a 1979 Bill Blass Edition which is in flawless condition.

I had a 1979 Mark V, loved that car. Drove it for nearly 10 years, and still kick myself for getting rid of it. Powder Blue with the landau top with every available option except for the sun roof. After years of driving the non descript cars of today, went back to the 70's and now driving an all original 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis.

I had a green on green 78 Mark V Givenchy edition. One of just over 900 made that year. 460 had pretty good torque for being so strangled by emissions standards. It was like riding on a cloud. Good memories of the Mark V 😊

Nice review, and interesting facts. My grandparents had a Mark V new, and then my dad took over ownership in `89. It was white with blue interior and a white carriage-top. I remember how powerful the brakes felt at age 10 sitting on my dad's lap driving it in a parking lot, compared to his `72 BMW 2002. This was an incredible car and was super comfy, and vault-like. This along with the `89 Town Car, my grandparents had later, will always be my favorite and most fond memory of any American cars in our family. Have no idea where that car is today. Wish I knew. It was a CA car, and came to CT in `89. Sold in `90.

My Mother had a 1974 Mark IV. I remember driving it when I was 16 years old. It had a 460 cubic inch engine with a factory Holley carburetor. It would do a burnout, that's for sure.

In 74 the factory car was NOT a Holley but a 4300 Motorcraft. The Holley was only used as a 4350 Motorcraft warranty replacement starting in 75.

I love the Mark V. I want the 1978 Diamond Jubilee in blue. They were just awesome. If I ever get lucky enough to find a Mark V in decent condition that doesn't cost a fortune, because values on these are going to the moon, I would have to have one with the 460. The 400 for 1979 was kind of underpowered especially compared to the 460.

I had a 78 with the 400 for a while. LOVED that car, but a 460 would have been better. My parents had a MK IV with the 460. I'd love to have another one, but they're expensive in good shape and I've heard that restoring one is a nightmarish undertaking.

A friend of mines mom had a Bill Blass Edition MK V ( some famous fashion designer ). They were all dark blue and gold . She used to take us to town and drop us off at the arcade , movies , mall and such in it. That thing was like riding on a cloud! Washing that big car was a chore LOL and she was picky. Regardless of fuel consumption, body or chaise issues or even cost or in some cases build quality and any other negative as well as positive points. These luxury 2-door land yachts (if they can be called that). Both in their unique design, size and presentation appearance they are all an American landmark icon of 20th century automotive design. I bought my '78 Mark V "Cartier Edition" (light tan with thickly padded quarter vinyl roof and the 400 engine) in 1989 for $1,850 and it now has 143,370 miles - drove it this week and it's doing fine. Fabulous, gorgeous cars - terrible gas mileage but for 100 miles a year .. so?? I also have my Mom's 1974 Mark IV in Firemist Burgundy with white vinyl top that I bought her in 1979 for $2,900- she's been gone 20 years but her car is doing just fine with 130,775 miles but the 460 has been overhauled :-)

Fun fact: This car was availible with a full metal roof so without any vinyl but they hid the option because it was not profirable, that makes it one of the most rare options to see driving around, my grandfather has it now as an oldtimer AND with the full metal roof

Mark III is the best version and best looking highest build quality. The Mark V looks good too but the III outdoes it plus the V had obvious cost cutting low build quality typical of the malaise era. Still I would drive one today if I got a chance to!!

I was on Lincoln Mercury Dealer lot in 1980 at age 18 looking over a new Cougar XR-7 and fell in Love with the Lincolns Mark V’s and The 4dr Mark VI, Town Coupe, Town Car, And Mark VI 2 dr. We’re all priced so much higher than the car it replaced. The digital Dashboard and Keyless Number pad on the door was so Futuristic with the Digital Trip Comp. A Town Coupe was $18K and Mark VI 4 Dr. Signature Series was $25K. The left over 1979 Town Cars that were massive were priced much much lower and with a deal to be had. You Could Save $10K over the 1980 Prices. I bought the Mid Level XR-7 with Decor Package and traded it in less then a year for a 1981 Bonniville Landau Sport Coupe in Burgundy with Rich Velour Biscuit interior. Honey Comb wheels and thickly padded landau top. What a pretty car. I insisted on that new 5.7 Diesel to save fuel and paid $1,800 more in 1981 money. Less then 2 months. Transmission, and Fuel Injectors went bad. In the Shop longer then I drove it. No one wanted it for trade after it was fixed. Until the Winter of 1983 in a blizzard the Dodge dealership was to lazy to open the hood and assumed it was a gas V8. They gave me full Value and I drove off in a ‘83 Charger 2.2 quite a different car but I really enjoyed the 5 speed and Sunroof. And I got the MPG’s I wanted.

my mom bought a new 73 Mark IV and in 76 I bought a 74 T-bird SO FULLY LOADED, White with Black Dash, White leather seats, moon roof, and the so cool electric vent windows that went down before the the main side windows - best of the best !

The Mark V was one of the most under rated cars produced. The ride quality was better than any other car if it’s kind. The engine was virtually silent, the car was so smooth there was literally no vibration what’s so ever. Consumer Guide made sure to destroy the reputation of full size luxury cars.

I loved my new '77 Mark. 460cid traction Lok, moonroof. & the rest is fond memories. Gr8 long distance traveler, a bit thirsty but, it had the miles to empty so, never would I drive with 25miles to empty or less. Didn't trust it. Many of my pals had so-called muscle cars of the era. On the highway, it was the Mark. The VOGUES improved an already nice ride. Even in snow, it would go on it's own. Imagine it with today's technology, hmmmm

Today's equivalent is the Bentley Continental. I always loved the Mk IV, came close to buyingone in the 80s, but at $4000 used and me a college student, I couldn't quite stretch far enough, ended up wiht a Chrysler Newport with landau top and fender skirts. Now I'm old, lusting after a Bentley convertible and still can't stretch that far, even used. I will probably end up with a jag or Mercedes SL I'm so disappointed Lincoln, Buick, and Cadillac have completely forgotten their heritage, and now only European makers make this type of car.

I remember seeing one of these on the showroom floor. It was a collectors series. The thing that struck me at the time, (I was 12) was the window sticker was two pages long. After listing all the standard features, I think there were two or three optional extras. Impressive cars

In the first few episodes, 1978, of the Dallas TV series, I think Jock Ewing drove a Mark 5. Apparently the car is on display at the Southfork Ranch in Dallas.

They had the car in the show until a little after Jock passed on. The first episodes used a different car, with Turbine wheels. Then it got replaced with a car that had wheel covers. I was born in the year the show came on, and we had a '77 Cartier (the Dove Grey car...I have its twin now) until 1988. I was obsessed with the car. Even when I was quite young and I'd see Dallas in the 1980s (with replays of the Jock years that must have been on) I remember wondering how such a rich man had a cheaper, more basic Mark V than ours, where it had only the wheel covers, options missing, plain interior, etc. The second car used as Jock's at least still exists.

I had a 76 Bird. Big. Except the back seat was somewhat tight and the bottom cushion slopped down so you had to wear a seatbelt to stay in it. Without the collapsible spare, the trunk was rather small, sort of like a super sized Camaro trunk. Even with the 460 I got about 12 city and 17 highway. With the 55 speed limit we usually cruised about 65 which I am sure helped the mileage.

I remember these old Ford's my buddy in high school,his Dad gave him his old one,he was getting a new one, but we took it and put headers and dual exhaust out to the rear,it was a 460 it sounded great and it made a great cruise back and forth to high school,it was the pretty hunter green one.

It's one of those rare designs that looks good even in colors I wouldn't normally like. I generally dislike light green and light blue shades as well as light or bright reds; silver, white and black I usually find rather dull. But pretty much all of them work on a Mark V. Mixing and matching different colored pinstripes and quarter vinyl roofs can make for truly stunning combinations.

A friend had one of these c1993. We took it on drunken road trips from Hilo to Kona on occasion. It had a 400 cid engine and was a pretty solid not-so-rusty car. I grew up in a California town full of retirees, so these were commonplace. In Hilo I almost bought a Mark III or a '65 Comet sedan, but didn't. I was a broke student.

Wounderful video this brings me back to my childhood unfortunately I didn't own one but my dad's uncle sold his '79 mark v to my dad in the early eighties I think for $5,000 Canadian, it was all white and it was very comfortable especially in the back seat for myself and my younger brother but it had mechanical problems the engine stalled every couple blocks which we thought was funny at the time

Was the most beautiful car I ever owned. I was only 20yrs old when I bought mine. Mine was a beautiful 1977 Black on Black with a white landau top. it was a head turner. I loved that car much I still remember the license plate number associated with the car. How can a kid so young own such a car. I started working at 13. In hopes that someday i would find the car of my dreams. I sure did!!!

My dad had a light blue "79 mark V with a 400 motor. It was an ok car when we replaced alot of parts to keep it going. I gave that car away in '09. My Dad passed away I miss him driving that car.😒 that's why if I get one its gotta be the '70 Mark lll that's the way to go. 🤩💙👍
